Kansas City Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo comments on Tyrann Mathieu's retirement announcement

USA Today24-07-2025
Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo addressed a pool of reporters after practice on Wednesday at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph. He addressed several topics, including thoughts on the retirement announcement of former Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu on Tuesday.
'I'm glad you brought that up. You know these young guys with the phones and stuff. It was like they immediately knew; I didn't know. I just had a – I love – you know how I feel about (Former NFL S) Tyrann (Mathieu),' said Spagnuolo. 'I'm waiting right now to send a text or a phone call because I know he is getting inundated. But I want to probably get him on a day off. Special, special guy. I mean, we came here in 2019, Tyrann and I together, and he was a key piece to what we were doing. (He) started off a little rough, but got better and better. But I love Tyrann Mathieu. I'm really excited for what he – he'll do something great moving forward. He might end up being the president, who knows? I mean he's a dynamic guy, but I think he'll stay somehow in athletics or football, that's my guess.'
Mathieu announced his retirement via social media on Tuesday, following 12 seasons in the NFL, with his most recent years spent with the New Orleans Saints. He was an impactful part of the Chiefs' Super Bowl LIV-winning team in 2019, as he began his tenure in Kansas City the same season as Spagnuolo. Mathieu spent three seasons in Kansas City, earning Pro Bowl selections twice, first-team All-Pro honors in 2020, and second-team honors in 2019.
Twice selected by Chiefs coaches as the Derrick Thomas MVP winner, he started 47 games, recording 213 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, four sacks, four fumble recoveries, 13 interceptions, 27 passes defended, and two defensive touchdowns.

Anthony Richardson's agent laments 'questionable' trust with Colts after decision to bench QB for Daniel Jones

Anthony Richardson got the bad news on Tuesday that he will not be the starting quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts. While speaking with reporters about the team's decision start Daniel Jones instead, Richardson took it in stride. His agent, Deiric Jackson, took a different tack. Jackson spoke with ESPN's Stephen Holder later Tuesday. He told Holder that that the decision constitutes a breakdown in trust with Colts management. "Trust is a big factor, and that is, at best, questionable right now," Jackson said. "Anthony came back and made the improvements in the areas he needed to improve. And by all accounts, he had a great camp." [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Jackson added that "we have a lot to discuss" in comments that didn't include a trade request but didn't inspire confidence in Richardson's future with the franchise. Richardson's response to benching Richardson, meanwhile, had this to say about the decision while speaking with reporters earlier Tuesday in the Colts locker room: "You've got to respect the decision," Richardson said. "They feel like he's a better fit for the team, better fit for the outcome of us winning. So you've just got to respect it and just keep working. "That doesn't undermine any other work I've been putting in, doesn't say that I haven't improved. I'm proud of the improvement I've made." That's a striking contrast in tone from Richardson and his agent as Richardson enters the season as a backup two-plus years after the Colts selected him with the No. 4 pick in the 2023 draft. What does Daniel Jones have to offer? Head coach Shane Steichen announced the decision to reporters early Tuesday. He made clear that the decision to start Jones is not just a Week 1 arrangement. "He's the starting quarterback for the season,' Steichen said. "I don't want to have a short leash on that." There's little to indicate that Jones offers the Colts a shot at any long-term or short-term success of significance. The Giants bailed on Jones in 2024 after five-plus turnover-plagued seasons as their starting quarterback that produced just one winning campaign (9-7-1, 2022). After a 2-8 start to the 2024 season in which Jones posted more turnovers (9) than touchdowns thrown (8), the Giants benched the former first-round pick. They ultimately released him before the season was over. Jones is a known commodity. Despite that, the Colts brought him in as competition for Richardson, whose struggles with injury (19 missed games), accuracy (50.6% completion rate) and leadership have undercut his tremendous upside as one of the most gifted athletes in the NFL. Richardson had plenty to work on this offseason to prove himself, and he and Jackson contend that he showed substantial signs of progress. But Jackson insinuated that a competition in which Jones got the first practice reps over the incumbent Richardson was determined before it started. Regardless of the motivation for the decision, the decision's been made. And it's put Richardson's future with the franchise that drafted him in peril.

Steelers quarterback Will Howard nearing a return?

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Will Howard suffered a fractured small bone in his right hand on August 5. The injury has limited his participation in training camp and kept him out of team drills for the preseason, joint practice, and into the home stretch before the final roster cutdowns. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network originally reported that Howard would miss at least three weeks, but could he play Thursday night in Carolina? Two weeks after suffering the injury, Steelers reporter Mark Kaboly of The Pat McAfee Show spotted Howard with a brace on his right hand. In the video, Howard caught a football with his left hand, never placed it in his right, and tossed it to a coach during drills. The sixth-round pick out of Ohio State missed Pittsburgh's first two preseason games, and it would be stunning to see him take the field in Carolina with no reps leading into his first NFL game. 'It does suck,' Howard told the media on August 12. 'As much as I'm trying to be a good teammate to pump my brothers up, I'm trying as hard as I can to not be bugged by this a ton. The competitor in me would tear my left arm off if I could go back in there.' With Howard sidelined and Mike Tomlin confirming that Aaron Rodgers won't play, Mason Rudolph is in line to make his third start of the preseason against the Panthers. The Steelers could opt to put Howard on IR if he isn't ready to go come the season opener on September 7. Skylar Thompson completed 20/28 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns against Jacksonville two weeks ago, but followed it up with a more pedestrian performance facing Tampa Bay. Thompson threw for 115 yards, no scores, and one interception as all three Steelers QBs threw a pick. Howard led the Big Ten in completion percentage (73%) and touchdowns (35) as a senior at Ohio State and guided the program to a national championship victory in Atlanta over Notre Dame.

Questions loom over rest of Browns quarterback room after Flacco named the Week 1 starter

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Kevin Stefanski resolved the biggest storyline of the Cleveland Browns training camp by naming Joe Flacco the starting quarterback on Monday. But as is the case with the quarterback position in Brownstown, naming a starter for the Week 1 opener against the Cincinnati Bengals set off a new round of questions. The one at the top of everyone's mind is how long Flacco thinks he can hang on to the job? Of the 10 quarterbacks who have started a game for the Browns since they traded Baker Mayfield in 2022, Flacco is tied for fifth with five starts in 2023, when he went 4-1 and directed Cleveland to its third playoff berth since returning to the league in 1999. 'Well, we all know how that works. I mean, that's everybody in the league, but it's not really my job to look at it in that way. It's just to go out there and play my game. Kind of like I've been doing all training camp and not worrying about all that stuff, just going out there, playing my game and being the best I can," Flacco said Tuesday. "I felt like I was having a good camp with the reps that I was given, and that's all you can do.' Flacco would also become the 11th different quarterback in league history to start a Week 1 game when they were at least 40 years old. Even though Flacco was the only Browns quarterback who has not missed time during training camp because of an injury, Stefanski said the decision went beyond what has transpired for the last month. 'I understand with the injuries, how that may look, that's really not the case here,' he said. "Joe performed really well, both in practice, in the joint practices, in the meeting room, you name it. What he's able to bring to the football team, he's earned that role.' Stefanski has not determined if Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel or Shedeur Sanders will be Flacco's backup. General manager Andrew Berry also has one week to determine if the team will indeed keep four quarterbacks on the roster. According to Sportradar, that has happened only five times since 2000. Pickett continues to come back from a hamstring strain but did get some snaps in 11-on-11 drills on Tuesday. Sanders was limited due to an oblique injury. Flacco and the starters will see action in Saturday's preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams, with the amount of playtime left to be determined. 'I think we all feel pretty good. You only get a certain amount of reps out there, and I think we've made the most of it, and I think that's every team in the league to a certain extent," Flacco said. "I think the good thing about this week is, we kind of get to put ourselves through a little bit of a game plan and simulate what we would be doing during the year. I think that's going to give everybody that extra confidence to take that next step.' ___ AP NFL:
