Netflix sequel of Happy Gilmore 2 had to be rewritten for one heartbreaking reason
Happy Gilmore 2 is set to be released on Netflix this weekend after nearly three decades since the first hit film came out in 1996. The highly anticipated comedy sequel, which premieres on Friday July 25, sees the return of unconventional golfer Happy, played by Adam Sandler, who comes out of retirement to fund his daughter Vienna's ballet school, who is portrayed by the actor's real life daughter, Sunny Sandler.
While the original iconic cast are set to return including Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald and Ben Stiller, there will be one famous face missing. Carl Weathers, who famously played Chubbs Peterson, the mentor to Sandler's Gilmore, in the 1996 film passed away last year at 76-years-old.
Sandler has revealed the sequel to Happy Gilmore had to be rewritten following the death of the Rocky and Predator star. Speaking to Collider, Sandler revealed that although Peterson died in the original film, he had planned to bring Weathers back for a significant role in the sequel film.
Sandler said: 'We had a painful change. Carl Weathers had a massive part.'
The 58-year-old former Saturday Night Live star continued: 'I would talk to Carl, and we were excited, and then Carl passed away.
"We had to rewrite a lot of the stuff, and even what the story was. We made a lot of nice references to how great Chubbs was in the movie. That was the biggest change.'
When asked what role Weathers' character would have played in the film, Sandler explained: 'In the first version that we came up with, he had a son.
"He was coming back to me a lot in my dreams, and he had a son who was mad at Happy for causing the death of daddy.'
Much of the original cast are returning for the new film. Modern Family star Julie Bowen revealed earlier this month that she hadn't expected to be asked to return.
Bowen played Virginia Venit who is a rep for a professional golf tour and the protagonist's love interest.
Speaking on the Inside of You podcast, Bowen revealed that she had assumed she'd be written out of the sequel.
She said: 'I didn't think they'd bring me back at all. I mean, who am I supposed to be?
"He's got to have a younger woman in this one, Happy Gilmore 2.'
She added that while she expected to get less screen time, Sandler repeatedly told her not to downplay the importance of her role in the film.

She said: 'Adam's like, 'Stop saying that. You're the heart of the movie'."
Netflix announced last year that Sandler would be returning for his role as Gilmore, an ice hockey player with anger management problems who realises he can channel that anger into major pro golf wins.
Newcomers Benny Safdie and Bad Bunny join the cast, along with a thrilling array of cameos and guest appearances from Travis Kelce, Margaret Qualley, Eminem and several professional golfers.

Lewis Capaldi reveals hilarious way he makes himself fall asleep at night
Lewis Capaldi has revealed his sleeping routine and the one bizarre thing that always sends him into a 'delightful' slumber. Lewis Capaldi has revealed his highly unconventional method of getting to sleep and it's with the help of one legendary US rapper. Speaking to Apple Music ahead of the launch of their new curated playlist series, Music That Soothes Me, the beloved Scots singer said he opts to listen to some old school rap by one particular music legend when his head touches the pillow at night. That artist is Eminem, known for his very fast paced rhymes and X-rated lyrics. The Someone You Loved singer explained: 'If I'm going to fall asleep, especially on a plane, I put on Eminem because I feel like it really puts me at ease. 'I listen to a lot of the older stuff like The Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show – for some reason it lulls me into a delightful little sleep. Or I'll put on some of my own demos which also really knock me out.' Lewis, who recently made his comeback to the limelight, has opened up about his first time returning to the stage as he admitted that he thought he would never perform again, The Sun reports. The 28-year-old says he is no longer taking antidepressant Sertraline after successfully defeating his demons and getting his mental health back in check. However, Lewis said he has also learned to accept that he will always have some degree of anxiety. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! I'm not on antidepressants any more.' Referencing his new No1 single Survive, Lewis recently told fans during a live stream: 'It was f***ing hard to get off it. "You could say I've survived getting off Sertraline but let's not get into that. This is happy stuff. I'm trying to share less.' The Hold Me While You Wait singer made his return to music last month on Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage as the festival's surprise act. Lewis had previously stepped back from singing, cancelling all performances and taking a two year break, after his Glastonbury performance in 2023 saw him struggle so badly with his Tourette's and anxiety that the crowds had to finish his songs for him. Reflecting on his meltdown on stage in 2023 on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Lewis said: "The first time did not go well. I had what the children would refer to as a bit of a menty B. A bit of a mental breakdown on stage. Nothing too serious. "I have Tourettes so I used to tic quite a lot and I still do but I used to do this thing with my shoulder and it became really uncontrollable and I had a panic attack on stage at Glastonbury and I couldn't finish the song. "It happened a couple of times at shows and stuff but I think because this one was so publicised and had so many eyes on it, it really made me think I need to go and get this sorted, I can't keep doing this to myself." However, Lewis is now back with a bang. With a UK and worldwide tour on the way this year and a brand new No.1 single, Capaldi said that his iconic Glastonbury return was "probably the best day of my life."

Kate Moss, 51, puts on a leggy display in a skimpy green dress as she poses with actress Chloë Sevigny, 50, in very sultry swimming pool shoot for Yves Saint Laurent campaign
Kate Moss put on a very leggy display in a lime green dress in a shoot for Yves Saint Laurent's Fall 2025 campaign. The supermodel, 51, proved she's still got it as she flaunted her age-defying figure in the sexy shoot. Kate was joined by American actress and director Chloë Sevigny, 50, along with model Frankie Rayder. Mother-of-one Kate, whose daughter is model Lila Moss, 22, posed for very sultry swimming pool shots with Chloe. Chloe, who most recently starred in Netflix 's Monster, placed her hand beneath Kate's cleavage as they floated in the water. American model Frankie, 50, confidently stripped off for one shot while posing under a blanket. The sexy shoot saw Kate, Chloe and Frankie film in the heart of Los Angeles for the AW25 campaign. Kate was also seen reclining behind the wheel of a convertible in a faux fur coat and sunglasses. Being a renowned supermodel, she'd know a thing or two about fashion. So it's no surprise Kate has taken it upon herself to 'police' poorly dressed pedestrians. 'I like going, 'What are they thinking?'' she admits. 'I don't want to be judgy, but you know when you're like, 'Nee naw, nee naw, fashion police!'' According to Daily Mail's Richard Eden, Kate added: 'It was the weirdest look. She had a pork-pie hat, a yellow Chanel backpack, tights, leather shorts, a yellow Nike high top trainer. 'I pulled them over and said, 'Where are you from?' They said France. They're definitely not from Paris, that's for sure.' Kate recently sparked concern among her fanbase after being filmed looking 'fraught' and 'on edge' as she sat front row at Paris Fashion Week. Kate was thought to have given up alcohol back in 2017 in favour of juice fasts and reformer Pilates, even selling her own range of teas and skincare products through her beauty and wellness brand, Cosmoss. She also posed in sexy white lace lingerie in another frame American model Frankie Rayder (pictured), 50, confidently stripped off for one shot while posing under a blanket The sexy shoot saw Kate, Chloe and Frankie film in the heart of Los Angeles for the AW25 campaign And while she has long struggled to give up her nicotine habit, just two years ago Kate - once hailed the 'greatest smoker of all time' - was seen puffing away on a vape in an attempt to give up the cigarettes. Back in January, Kate was reportedly planning a huge boozy birthday bash to celebrate her 51st birthday following her split from boyfriend of nine years, Nikolai von Bismarck, 38. Kate, who lived in the Cotswolds with teetotal photographer Nikolai, apparently decided at the time that she 'wants to let her hair down' to mark her birthday with her famous pals. A source told The Sun: 'Last year, she celebrated her 50th at an intimate soiree in Paris, which was fairly pared down. 'But a lot has changed since then and Kate has said she wants this party to be like turning over a new leaf. 'Now that her daughter Lila is all grown up and she is single again, Kate feels like she wants to let her hair down and be carefree — which is not something she's been able to do for a long time. 'She is looking on the bright side of life. Although it's sad her relationship is over, she is throwing herself back into her social life and embracing the new year.' She went on to start her new chapter celebrating her 51st birthday at A-list restaurant China Tang at The Dorchester before continuing her night until the early hours at The Globe in London's Notting Hill.

Celebrity SAS star 'quits just hours into first day of filming' as show to return this weekend
Celebrity SAS Who Dares Win 2025 is set to return this weekend but one star has reportedly already quit the gruelling Channel 4 show. A Celebrity SAS Who Dares Win 2025 star has reportedly 'quit the show and walked off set' just hours into the first day of filming. The full celebrity line up for the upcoming seventh season of the show, which returns this weekend on Sunday August 3, was revealed earlier this week. Among the famous faces competing in the gruelling challenges this year is S Club star and actress Hannah Spearritt. The 44-year-old reportedly walked away from the Channel 4 show during the first day of filming. Fans will reportedly see Hannah struggle in the very early stages before deciding to bow out, The Sun reports. A source told MailOnline: "Hannah had pretty much exhausted all of her connections within the industry before she left for Costa Rica. "She no longer speaks to her band mates and has now completely shut herself off from that world. The final straw came last summer when she took part in Celebrity SAS." The insider explained that Hannah "truly believed" a stint on the programme could "turn things around for her". However, they added: "But sadly she just couldn't hack it and walked on the first day. It was all rather embarrassing." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. A representative for Celebrity SAS Who Dares Wins has declined to comment on the situation. Earlier this year, S Club star Hannah disclosed her new life as a "survivalist and prepper" in the Costa Rican jungle. The singer relocated in January alongside partner Adam Thomas and their children, to start a new life after leaving the UK. Taking to Instagram, Hannah described herself as "Prepper, survivalist and creator now living the uninhibited jungle life." She captioned a post: "Looking out to new beginnings at our new home! "Next on the menu is to learn permaculture… and have a laugh at ourselves filming the planting of the fruit forest!" Ahead of their life changing move, Hannah said: "That's the dream, to move to Costa Rica and buy some land or a farm and live the simple life with the girls." In 2022, she decided to set up Warth & Fire cafe in Twickenham, South West London with her partner Adam. However, the cafe was never fully ready to open and a pal of the singer previously revealed that she was selling up amid rising costs. They told The Sun: "It's the latest in a sequence of setbacks. The new plan is selling up and moving to Costa Rica to live off the land." This year's Celebrity SAS 2025 line up includes a raft of famous faces including Love Island stars, Premier League footballers, music stars, a drag queen and even one famous drugs mule. Celebrity SAS Who Dares Win 2025 returns to Channel 4 on Sunday, August 3 at 9pm.
