Eng. Yousif Al Ali: 'We aim to create a sustainable environment for farmers through smart solutions that reduce costs and preserve resources.'
H.E. Eng. Ahmed Al Kaabi: 'We are committed to supporting national efforts to enhance food and water security by providing sustainable solutions.'
H.E. Dr. Mohamed Salman Al Hammadi: 'Protecting our groundwater resources contributes to maintaining ecological balance.'
Dubai,March 2024: Etihad Water and Electricity (EtihadWE) continues to support the UAE's efforts in strengthening food and water security by providing sustainable solutions for the agricultural sector. These initiatives improve water consumption efficiency, alleviate pressure on groundwater resources, and ensure sustainable agricultural production. This aligns with EtihadWE's commitment, in coordination with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, to the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036, the National Food Security Strategy 2051, the National Water and Energy Demand Management Programme 2050, the UAE Centennial 2071 objectives, and the Plant the Emirates National Programme.
Desalinated water has emerged as a reliable and sustainable irrigation option, enabling cost savings for farmers while reducing reliance on groundwater. To support this transition, EtihadWE introduced a revised tariff structure, offering three pricing tiers: up to 600,000 gallons per month at 1.5 fils per gallon, between 600,001 and 1.5 million gallons per month at 2 fils per gallon, and consumption exceeding this level at 2.5 fils per gallon.
Since the introduction of these reduced tariffs in January 2022, over 1,300 farmers have benefited, reflecting a strong positive response from the agricultural community in the Northern Emirates.
Eng. Yousif Ahmed Al Ali, CEO of EtihadWE, stated: 'Aligned with the UAE's vision for sustainability, we are dedicated to providing innovative solutions that enhance water consumption efficiency and support the long-term sustainability of the agricultural sector. By investing in advanced technologies, we ensure a reliable water supply and promote responsible resource management.'
He added: 'Through collaboration with our strategic partners, primarily the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, we empower farmers with tangible financial savings while reinforcing their role in preserving natural resources. Investing in sustainable water practices secures the future of agriculture and upcoming generations.'
H.E. Eng. Ahmed Al Kaabi, Assistant Undersecretary for the Electricity, Water, and Future Energy Sector at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, stated: 'We reaffirm our steadfast commitment to supporting the UAE's food and water security objectives by providing sustainable solutions that improve water consumption efficiency in the agricultural sector and promote reliance on alternative water sources to ensure the sustainability of natural resources for future generations.'
He added: 'The introduction of reduced water tariffs for farmers reflects our commitment to enabling them to benefit from innovative solutions that generate financial savings while supporting national strategies, including the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036 and the National Food Security Strategy 2051. We will continue working closely with our strategic partners to provide advanced solutions that ensure the sustainability of the water and agricultural sectors, which are essential pillars of sustainable development.'
H.E. Dr. Mohamed Salman Al Hammadi, Assistant Undersecretary for the Food Diversity Sector at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, said: 'Our groundwater resources are invaluable, and conserving them is essential for maintaining ecological balance and ensuring long-term agricultural sustainability.'
He explained that making desalinated water more accessible encourages more farmers to use it for irrigation instead of groundwater, adding: 'EtihadWE's initiative is a significant step in supporting farmers and the agricultural community. Raising awareness about the benefits of desalinated water and promoting efficient water consumption will play a key role in fostering sustainable local agricultural production.'
Beyond the economic benefits, this initiative supports the transition to modern agricultural systems, such as vertical farming and hydroponics, which enhance production efficiency and promote sustainable practices. It also enables local farmers to contribute to national sustainability goals, particularly in preserving groundwater, a critical strategic reserve.
Through this initiative, EtihadWE reaffirms its commitment to supporting the agricultural community, advancing sustainable water solutions, and contributing to a more resilient future for the UAE's agricultural sector.

Nestlé's flagship youth initiative celebrates student-led sustainability solutions from over 200 participants — and announces the program's return for a second edition launching in November 2025. Under the auspices of the UAE Ministry of Economy and the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, Nestlé and INJAZ UAE announced the winner of the inaugural Sustainability Heroes Award. This youth-centered initiative has equipped more than 200 university students across the UAE with the skills and mentorship to develop innovative sustainability solutions. Kleva, composed of students from University of Sharjah, took top honors for their project,— a dynamic project-based learning platform providing students and young professionals with real-world experience before formal employment. Their proposal stood out for its originality, viability, and potential to create measurable social impact. The winning team will now begin internships with Nestlé, gaining hands-on experience and access to further mentoring opportunities to help refine and scale their solution. Over six months, students engaged in a 'Learning by Doing' format emphasizing entrepreneurship, business acumen, and real-world impact. At the heart of the program is the INJAZ UAE Company Program, which transforms classrooms into start-ups. Students worked in teams to develop business solutions addressing real sustainability challenges while learning from each other and industry professionals. Emphasizing sustainability-driven entrepreneurship, the program empowered participants to build innovative, purpose-led ventures that respond to pressing environmental and social issues. Throughout the journey, students received dedicated training and hands-on mentorship from Nestlé professionals, gaining exposure to real-world business contexts and sustainability practices. As a result: Nestlé employees mentored the students; 10 internships and 15 mentorship opportunities will be extended to top students, with the winning team securing automatic placements to the internships; Finalists are acquiring critical business skills to serve them in future roles, whether as employees or entrepreneurs. The Sustainability Heroes Award celebrates not only the winning solution but also the broader movement to foster sustainable thinking and practical action among the UAE's emerging talent. A platform with long-term purpose: 'As we look ahead to the next phase of the UAE's economic transformation, programs like Sustainability Heroes will continue to play a vital role in equipping our youth to lead with purpose and contribute to the knowledge economy,' said His Excellency Abdullah Ahmed Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the UAE Ministry of Economy. Ms. Hajar Bakhit Alketbi, Director of the Government Communication Department at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, added: 'Youth are central to climate action and sustainable development. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment is committed to developing the young people of our country as the leaders of tomorrow, a premise that underpins the Sustainability Heroes Award. We believe their role is critical to climate action, and we are committed to strategically integrating young people into every aspect of our efforts to combat climate change. Their energy, enthusiasm, and skillset are invaluable assets that can drive real transformation and help us achieve our sustainability goals. I commend Nestlé's efforts in inspiring student-led sustainability projects, demonstrating how the private sector can contribute to our climate initiatives. I also commend all the participants for their remarkable projects and eagerly anticipate the next edition in November.' Ms. Sarah Shaw, CEO of at Majra, said: 'At Majra, we believe in unlocking the potential of youth to lead national progress. Sustainability Heroes is a prime example of how partnerships can equip young people with the skills, mindset, and confidence to turn their ideas into action — not only for their own futures, but for the future of our planet.' Hassan Atia, General Business Manager of Nestlé UAE, commented: 'This award is not just a recognition of student excellence — it's a celebration of bold ideas and a powerful commitment to change. At Nestlé, we're proud to walk alongside young changemakers building a better future for people and the planet. This initiative is a reflection of our global commitment through the Nestlé Needs Youth program, which empowers young talent with the skills, opportunities, and platforms they need to thrive. And this is just the beginning — we look forward to expanding the program's reach and impact in the next edition.' The Sustainability Heroes initiative is designed as a long-term platform to equip youth with the tools and mindset to contribute meaningfully to the UAE's national priorities — from sustainability and climate resilience to entrepreneurship and food security. By embedding sustainability into entrepreneurship education, the program supports the development of job-ready, purpose-driven talent capable of building solutions for a better tomorrow. On the Sidelines of World Utilities Congress 2025 EtihadWE and Emarat Formalise Strategic Collaboration to Enhance Customer Experience Through EmCan Loyalty Program

Etihad Water and Electricity (EtihadWE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Emirates Petroleum Company (Emarat) on the sidelines of the World Utilities Congress 2025, marking a new phase of collaboration that brings EmCan — the loyalty program — into the utilities sector. The signing ceremony was held in the presence of H.E. Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, and Chairman of both EtihadWE and Emarat. Through this partnership, EtihadWE becomes the first utility provider in the UAE to integrate with a loyalty platform. Customers can now earn EmCan points by paying their utility bills via EtihadWE's digital platforms within five days of the bill issue date. Each qualifying payment earns 1,000 EmCan points — equivalent to AED 10 — redeemable at Emarat stations and across a wide network of partner outlets, including retail, dining, and lifestyle destinations across the UAE. 'This partnership reflects our continued commitment to innovation that delivers real value to our customers,' said Eng. Yousif Ahmed Al Ali, CEO of EtihadWE. 'By turning everyday transactions like bill payments into rewarding experiences, we are deepening engagement and offering tangible benefits that strengthen trust and loyalty.' Ali Khalifa Al Shamsi, CEO of Emarat, added: 'Our collaboration with EtihadWE is a meaningful step in extending EmCan to essential public services. By rewarding routine actions, we make loyalty more relevant, accessible, and part of customers' daily lives.' The signing took place during EtihadWE's participation at the World Utilities Congress 2025 in Abu Dhabi (27–29 May), where the company is showcasing key national projects shaping the future of the water and energy sectors: Naqa'a Seawater Reverse Osmosis Plant: One of the world's largest SWRO facilities, producing up to 250 million cubic metres of potable water annually using advanced technology. The plant operates with over 60% less energy than conventional systems. Khuraijah Water Storage and Distribution Centre: With a total storage capacity of 180 million gallons across nine tanks, the centre uses gravity-fed distribution from its 80-metre elevation, saving about 36 million kilowatt-hours and over AED 16 million annually. Distributed Solar System Project: In collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, this initiative enables customers to install rooftop solar panels and feed excess power into the grid in exchange for energy credits, reducing bills and supporting national clean energy goals. AMI Smart Metering Project: A long-term program for full smart meter deployment across the Northern Emirates, enabling automatic readings, early fault detection, and improved operational efficiency. EtihadWE's participation at the Congress reaffirms its commitment to innovation and long-term sustainability — continuously advancing services that meet the evolving needs of communities across the UAE.
