Published on: Fri, Jul 25, 2025 Text Size: SMJ Energy's operations are aligned with the Sabah State Government's vision to promote economic growth, expand local participation in the energy industry, and transition towards a sustainable energy future. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Energy continues to deliver strong returns for Sabah, recording RM94 million from its 10th crude oil sale under the Samarang Production Sharing Contract (PSC), bringing its total estimated revenue to RM1.9 billion since acquiring a stake in the offshore asset. The State-owned energy company secured a 50 per cent participating interest in the Samarang PSC on May 31, 2023, and has since recorded consistent gains, including RM397 million in 2025 alone through strategic sales of crude oil and gas. Located offshore Sabah, the Samarang PSC not only contributes significantly to the state's income but also plays a vital role in supplying gas to the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP) and three nearby gas-powered plants. In a statement Thursday, SMJ Energy said the successful series of sales reinforces its role as a key driver of Sabah's energy sector and economic development. 'The continuous revenue stream from Samarang reflects our long-term commitment to delivering sustainable value to the State,' it said. SMJ Energy's operations are aligned with the Sabah State Government's vision to promote economic growth, expand local participation in the energy industry, and transition towards a sustainable energy future. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kuala Lumpur's stand against grocery shop licences to foreigners. Enforce it in Sabah: Warisan
Published on: Tuesday, July 29, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 29, 2025 Text Size: A foreigner-operated retail shop in Kapayan and Moyog. Kota Kinabalu: The Federal Government's stand against issuing grocery shop licences to foreigners must be fully enforced in Sabah, especially in areas like Kapayan and Moyog, said Warisan Kapayan Branch Chief Pritchard Gumbaris. He said the presence of foreign-operated grocery shops is once again mushrooming in local villages, pushing aside Sabahan traders and threatening small kampung economies. 'I agree with Minister Nga Kor Ming's statement, but this must not just apply to Peninsular Malaysia. In Sabah, the situation is worsening. Just walk through Kapayan or Moyog and you'll see for yourself,' he said in a statement, Monday. Pritchard, who is also political secretary to Warisan Deputy President Datuk Darell Leiking, blamed lack of enforcement by the current elected representatives for the resurgence of the issue. 'This is not a new problem. We had solved this before through strict enforcement during the Warisan Plus Government, in collaboration with the Penampang District Council (MDC) and local authorities. 'Trading licence applications were vetted thoroughly. Village chiefs had to endorse each one, and we personally interviewed applicants, checked photos and conducted on-site visits. 'We rejected applications linked to foreigners using local proxies or fake documents,' he said. He claimed that under the leadership of Penampang MP Datuk Ewon Benedict and Kapayan Assemblywoman Datuk Jannie Lasimbang, the previous system collapsed. 'Enforcement has failed. The process we built was not maintained, and foreign traders have returned. 'Ewon and Jannie looked the other way. The very problem we fixed is now back, worse than before,' he said. Pritchard said this was not about race or hatred, but about upholding the law and protecting local livelihoods. 'This is about Sabahan kampung shopkeepers who are being squeezed out. The law is already in place, the Sabah Trades Licensing Ordinance 1948 (Cap. 144) spells out restrictions on foreign traders. The issue is not the law, but political will,' Pritchard said. He also called on State Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Joachim Gunsalam to ensure local councils do not allow foreign operators to abuse loopholes. Pritchard said Warisan would reinstate the previous enforcement model if given the mandate in Kapayan. 'We've also proposed an Ombudsman Committee to receive whistleblower reports on licence corruption. It's time to stop the backdoor approvals and political favours. 'We did it before and with the people's support, we will do it again,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) Sabah launched a Platinum Club as part of its new initiative aimed at strengthening ties with its long-standing members. The move reflects the Chamber's effort to recognise senior contributors while facilitating intergenerational knowledge exchange. Led by its Council Member Benny Hon, the Platinum Club will organise regular engagements, including bimonthly gatherings, to foster closer collaboration between veteran and newer members. As part of its inaugural activities, a delegation including Vice Presidents Jacky Chin and Louis Su conducted visits to senior members, presenting them with tokens of appreciation sponsored by MCCC Sabah President Datuk Dexter Lau. On Saturday the Chamber hosted an exclusive afternoon tea event at a local venue, attended by senior advisers, council members and new entrants. The gathering served as a platform for mentorship discussions and networking. In his address, Dexter credited former leaders, including Datuk Frankie Liew and Datuk Michael Chin, for their foundational contributions. 'Their guidance has been instrumental in shaping the Chamber's direction,' said Dexter. Meanwhile, Benny, the club's coordinator, pointed out the initiative's role in preserving institutional knowledge. 'We want younger members to learn from the experience of those who paved the way,' he said. The Platinum Club is expected to hold its next meeting in September, with further activities planned to enhance member engagement. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Median monthly wage for formal sector rises to RM3,000 in Q1 2025: DOSM
Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. PUTRAJAYA: The median monthly wage for Malaysia's formal sector rose 5.5 per cent to RM3,000 in March 2025, up from RM2,844 a year earlier, according to the Employee Wages Statistics (Formal Sector) Report for the First Quarter of 2025, released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) today. In a statement today, Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the increase reflects the country's continued economic growth and the impact of the revised minimum wage policy, which has positively influenced the labour market. As of March, he said the formal sector workforce stood at 6.8 million, comprising 55.1 per cent men and 44.9 per cent women. The median wage for male employees remained at RM3,000, while female employees saw a 6.5 per cent increase to RM2,982, compared to a 3.4 per cent rise for men. The highest year-on-year wage growth was recorded among workers under 20, with their median wage rising 13.3 per cent to RM1,700, largely driven by the reimplementation of the minimum wage policy in February. However, a slight drop was observed in the number of workers aged 20 to 24. He added that the mining and quarrying sector posted the highest median wage at RM8,800, although it accounted for just 0.6 per cent of total formal employment. The agriculture sector remained the lowest, with a median wage of RM2,200. Geographically, the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur recorded the highest median monthly wage at RM4,445 in March 2025, followed by Selangor at RM3,300. At the other end of the spectrum, Sabah posted a median wage of RM2,000, while Kelantan and Perlis recorded the lowest at RM1,800. Mohd Uzir said 27.4 per cent of Malaysian formal sector workers earned below RM2,000 per month as of March, down 3.8 percentage points from 31.2 per cent in the same month last year. He added that a percentile analysis revealed workers in the bottom 10th percentile earned RM1,700 or less, while those in the top 10th percentile earned at least RM11,000 per month. 'This reflects an income gap where the top 10 per cent earn six times more than the bottom 10 per cent,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
