Waqf board clears lease of 2,000 cr Guntur land

The land, valued at approximately 2,000 crore, will be sub-leased by APIIC to private industries.
The waqf board chairman Abdul Azeez defended the move saying that that they were not selling the land to APIIC in order to protect the land title. The board has resolved to give the land on long-term lease to APIIC. "We are giving the land on lease without changing ownership and title. Chief minister Chandrababu Naidu has instructed us to ensure that board earns steady income to take up welfare activities for the minorities," said Abdul Azeez.
Sources said the state got had directed the waqf board to transfer the land to APIIC to avoid controversy over direct allocation to private entities. However, some board members expressed strong opposition, arguing that leasing the land is tantamount to losing it permanently. "It will be extremely difficult to reclaim the land once leased, especially if tenants default on rent," said board member and YSRCP MLC Mohammed Ruhulla.
Board chairman Abdul Azeez turned down the charge saying that they would take all possible measures to protect the land title. He alleged that the previous YSRCP govt had failed to help waqf board make revenue even from the central schemes. He alleged that previous regime diverted 386 crore of Waqf funds.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has announced that the Polavaram irrigation project on the Godavari will be commissioned in 2027. The global experts are monitoring the work,' the Chief Minister said. Referring to the achievement during the one-year NDA rule in the State, Mr. Naidu said that the government had attracted investment worth ₹9.5 lakh crore, with the potential to create 8.5 lakh jobs. Works worth of ₹5 lakh crore investment is in progress. On the upliftment of the poor families through the Public Private People Partnership (P-4) model, Mr. Naidu said a target has been set to ensure adoption of 10 lakh poor families by August 15. 'The Tata, Birla and Adani groups have pledged to adopt some poor families. I have decided to run after those who could afford to adopt some poor families to achieve the target,' Mr. Naidu said. In Andhra Pradesh, nearly one lakh poor families have been adopted by various individuals and groups. On delivering the Super Six promises, Mr. Naidu clarified that the free bus service for women would be implemented from August 15.

Andhra Pradesh govt may refund ₹2,500 crore as HC strikes down hike in industrial power duty
The cash-strapped N Chandrababu Naidu government may have to foot a bill of about ₹2,500 crore as the Andhra Pradesh High Court has struck down an electricity duty levied on industrial and commercial establishments by the previous YSRCP government . The issue pertains to a duty levied on the sale of each unit of electricity. Under the Andhra Pradesh Electricity Duty (Amendment) Act, 1994, the state had levied 6 paise per unit of "electricity duty" on all consumers, except on power sold to the Centre and the railways. In 2022, the then Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP government increased this levy to ₹1 for industrial and commercial users through a government order. Andhra Pradesh's textile and ferro alloys industries challenged this order in the court, terming it "discriminatory" to industry as these two industries are heavy consumers of power, which accounts for 50 per cent of their input costs. A bench of Andhra Pradesh chief justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and justice R Raghunandan Rao on Friday scrapped the government order through which electricity duty was enhanced. The order reads: "GOMs No 7, dated 08.04.2022 is struck down. However, the government is entitled to collect duty at the rate of 6 paise per unit, throughout the period from the date when Act of 2021 was published in the Gazette till such time as the rate of duty is modified, in accordance with law." Since the government order has been struck down, it will need to refund 94 paise per unit collected in excess from industrial and commercial consumers. A government source, who did not wish to be identified, told ET: "Industrial consumption of electricity is about 1,539 crore units per year. We will be calculating the dues per user. It will be about ₹2,500 crore." The government is weighing options, including appealing in the Supreme Court and adjusting future bills of consumers. Sri Anantha Laxmi Spinning Mills executive director Paani Kumar Samineni told ET: "The government collected 94 paise excess electricity duty for 18 months till different associations got a stay order from court. This order will help consumers in recovering these dues running into hundreds of crores." The enhanced duty was collected till October 2023.
