Driver high on nitrous oxide struck pedestrian
A teenager high on nitrous oxide knocked down a pedestrian before her car overturned and ended up on its side in the road.
Louisa Tunstall, from Lowton in Wigan, was driving her white Fiat 500 along Newton Road in the town when she struck the 51-year-old woman.
Tunstall, 19, claimed she had been trying to retrieve something from the footwell of her car when the collision happened on 24 May 2024.
She was jailed for 20 months after pleading guilty at Bolton Crown Court to dangerous driving while under the influence of drugs.
The court heard Tunstall had veered on to the pavement before striking the pedestrian.
She admitted to police that she had been taking nitrous oxide, which is also known as laughing gas and is a Class C drug that has been banned since 2023.
Tunstall's victim was left with life-changing injuries which still affect her, the court heard.
In a victim impact statement, the 51-year-old said: "I remember lying on the floor and looking down at my left leg and seeing blood dripping down.
"I looked up and saw a white car on its side.
"I do not remember feeling any pain at the time. I was shouting for help, I felt like I was whispering, it didn't seem real."
The victim said she was still not able to lead an active life and could not properly use her left leg.
Tunstall, of Bradwell Road, was banned from driving for two years and told that, in order to regain her licence, she would then have to pass an extended driving test.
PC Stefan Bielizna, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "It is clear to see the catastrophic effects the actions of Tunstall have had on the victim.
"The victim's bravery... should be commended and we hope she can continue her recovery safe in the knowledge that justice has been served.
"It was made clear by the judge that drivers under the influence of nitrous oxide will be given time behind bars if they choose to get behind the wheel."

Mother of Salford teenager killed in motorbike crash pays tribute to son
The mother of a teenager who died in a motorbike crash in Salford has paid tribute to her "lovable" son and thanked the community for its overwhelming support. Kailem Robinson, 16, died alongside 17-year-old Kaine Darby after their motorbike was involved in a collision with a car on Lower Broughton Road at around 8.20pm on Wednesday, May 22. In a tribute released through Greater Manchester Police, Kailem's mum Jill described her son as a caring and popular boy who had a 'cheeky smile and infectious laugh'. She said: 'Kailem was someone who was always polite; he was popular with everyone and would do anything to help people out. READ MORE: 'He was known as the class clown in school, always making everyone laugh. He always had a passion for bikes from a young age and would help other kids on the street fix theirs. 'He was very lovable with me, always telling me he loved me.' She said Kailem's death had 'shocked the community' and thanked residents of Lower Broughton for rallying around her family with flowers, donations and a GoFundMe page set up to help with funeral costs. 'Kailem's friends have been amazing, bringing shopping round and just being here trying to comfort me and give me some normality,' she said. 'Kailem will be missed by everyone – the reaction from the community has shown how loved he was by everyone who knew him. 'My life will never be the same again. He was my baby. I miss you, son.' Both families are being supported by specialist officers as the investigation into the crash continues. Two men arrested after digger stolen from building site
Police have arrested two men after a digger was stolen from a building site. The theft was reported last Sunday, June 1, when the vehicle was found to be missing from the building site on Lower Bridgeman Street in Bolton. Officers said that they they believe a white flatbed truck was used to take the yellow 1.6 JCB Excavator Digger away. They said that two men have been arrested on suspicion of theft, but have since been bailed while police investigate the incident further. Police are now appealing to the public for information about the incident.
