Year in and year out, the most popular summer nail colours have one thing in common — they're bold. I get it. The arrival of sunshine season means that from our mood to our outfit choices, everything tends to get a whole lot brighter. And here in the UK especially, where the chances to get our toes out are few and far between, it makes sense to opt for a pedicure colour that's pleasingly vibrant.

But for summer 2025, it seems like the tides are turning. Sure, there are still some eye-catching brights and more unexpected tones that are set to prove popular for the season ahead, but the dominating feel is a whole lot more subtle.

From milky finishes to barely-there blushes, all of the nail experts that I spoke to seemed to point to a preference for calm, clean and quiet shades that make for a pleasingly versatile base for both glamorous beach getaways and chilled summer afternoons in the city.
Pastel French

A fresh and playful twist on the classic French, pedicure master Milly Mason predicts that switching white tips for pastel hues will be huge this summer. 'It's so fun but chic at the same time,' says Mason. Opt for shades like mint, lilac and baby blue like Mason's sorbet-inspired pedicure here.
Almond Milk

Creamy whites and translucent neutrals — think almond milk — are dominating for summer. 'Milky pedicures are my go-to and I'm seeing them everywhere on my feed for summer '25,' explains global manicurist and Bio Sculpture nail technician Julia Diogo. To recreate something like this polished pedi by Elim UK, Diogo suggests seeking out a 'sheer, creamy white as opposed to a harsh one', like Bio Sculpture's Seafoam Polish, £15.50.

Pastels are definitely reigning supreme ahead of summer, but this delicate and dreamy shade of purple is going to be especially popular. 'Soft shades like lavender always complement sun-kissed skin and really capture the fresh, playful energy of the season while still looking contemporary,' says session manicurist Ami Streets. This glazed pedi by manicurist @nailsxbymilena is the perfect example.

Much like the white T-shirt of pedicure colours, a soft pink is effortless and looks good on everyone. 'Something like Essie Ballet Slippers, £8.99, is so soft and elegant and works perfectly for those who like a minimalist look,' says nail artist Iram Shelton.
Aqua Splash

Consider this the wild card colour for summer. While matcha and pistachio greens have been huge for spring, things are getting punchier for the season ahead. Aquamarine, cyan blue and turquoise will be making a splash on toes, like this statement pedi by The Nail Atelier.
Black Gloss

Black might sound like an unexpected choice for summer, but trust me, it's the coolest pedicure of the season. 'An ultra-glossy black pedicure pairs perfectly with a colourful sandal and is a year-round favourite of mine,' says Mason. Recreate her stylish colour block pedicure at home using OPI Infinite Shine Lady In Black Nail Polish, £18.
Fiery Red

'You can't escape summer without a vibrant red on your toes,' says Shelton, and tomato red is the shade of the season. 'It's bold, fiery and looks incredible against sun-kissed skin.' Recreate this crimson pedi by Bombnailz Bay Area at home using a high-shine shade like Essie Gel Couture in Rock The Runway, £10.99.
Iridescent Glow

Soft shimmers, opalescent finishes and pearly chromes are having a moment for summer — and we can't get enough. 'They give a luminous, barely-there glow that catches the light beautifully and makes a great choice for those who prefer a more low-key pedicure,' explains Streets. Manucurist Active Plump, £16, adds a pearlescent sheen to nails while hydrating and plumping.
Butter Yellow

Light, bright and instantly cheerful, butter yellow is like sunshine in a bottle. If you want to dip your toe into a colourful pedi, but aren't a fan of summer neons, then this makes a great alternative. Try Gucci Nail Polish in 218 Cecilia Ivory, £27, to recreate the subtle golden warmth of this pedicure by Alisa.In_.

Jussie Smollett Donates $50,000 to Arts Center to Settle Chicago's Lawsuit

Jussie Smollett, the former 'Empire' star, announced that he had donated $50,000 to a Chicago charity to settle a lawsuit by the city about his claim that he had been the victim of a hate crime. In 2022, a jury convicted Mr. Smollett of felony disorderly conduct for filing a false police report after he said he had been attacked in downtown Chicago by two men who hurled racist and homophobic slurs at him. His conviction was overturned last year by the Illinois Supreme Court, which said the special prosecutor's case violated a previous agreement with Mr. Smollett. Mr. Smollett shared details of his settlement with the city in a statement posted to Instagram on Friday, saying that he had made a $50,000 donation to the Building Brighter Futures Center for the Arts. According to its website, the organization's mission is to 'improve the quality of life for underprivileged youth and their families by providing safe, stable and nurturing experiences.' The City of Chicago had sued Mr. Smollett six years ago, seeking more than $130,000 to cover the costs of its police investigation. It said the settlement with Mr. Smollett required the charitable contribution. 'The city believes this settlement provides a fair, constructive and conclusive resolution, allowing all the parties to close this six-year-old chapter and move forward,' a city spokeswoman, Kristen Cabanban, said in a statement. She said that Mr. Smollett also made a $10,000 payment to the city in 2019, and that he had faced additional accountability through his criminal trial. Mr. Smollett posted on Friday that, in addition to the settlement, he had also donated $10,000 to the Chicago Torture Justice Center, an organization that 'seeks to address the traumas of police violence and institutionalized racism,' according to its website. A representative of the Building Brighter Futures Center confirmed in an email that it had received the donation. The Chicago Torture Justice Center confirmed Mr. Smollett's donation in an Instagram post last week. Mr. Smollett originally said that the men who hurled slurs at him also tied a rope around his neck and doused him with a chemical substance. The story initially inspired outrage and sympathy for the actor, but prosecutors became suspicious of his account and charged him with felony disorderly conduct. Those initial charges were dropped in 2019 after Mr. Smollett agreed to perform community service and forfeit a $10,000 bond payment. But after an outcry from the mayor and the police, a special prosecutor revived the case. Chicago's lawsuit had been on pause while the criminal charges worked their way through the courts. Mr. Smollett, who has maintained his innocence and countersued city officials, said in his Instagram post that he was aware the settlement 'will not change everyone's mind about me.' 'What I have to do now is move forward,' he wrote.

Billy Joel ‘not ready to retire' as he battles shocking brain disorder: report

This Piano Man isn't done playing. Despite being diagnosed with a brain disorder called normal pressure hydrocephalus, Billy Joel reportedly isn't looking to step back from his career anytime soon. 'He is happiest while performing,' a music industry insider told People on Tuesday. 'Music is, has been and will always be his life. He's not ready to retire.' 6 Billy Joel performs onstage during the last show of his residency at Madison Square Garden on July 25, 2024 in New York City. Getty Images The musician, 76, did, however, have to cancel all of his upcoming tour dates due to his condition. NPH occurs when cerebrospinal fluid builds up inside the skull and presses on the brain, disrupting cognitive functioning. A source close to Joel confirmed to the outlet, 'He is not retiring and hopes to be able to resume performing as his recovery progresses.' The Post reached out to Joel's rep for comment. On Monday, the artist's wife, Alexis Roderick Joel, whom he tied the knot with in a surprise ceremony in 2015, addressed fans on Joel's social media account. 'Thank you for the outpouring of love and support,' she wrote on her husband's Instagram beneath a family photo of the couple and their daughters Della, 9, and Remy, 7. 'We are so grateful for the wonderful care and swift diagnosis we received.' 6 Billy Joel performs onstage. Getty Images 'Bill is beloved by so many, and to us, he is a father and husband who is at the center of our world,' Alexis continued. 'We are hopeful for his recovery. We look forward to seeing you all in the future.' In a previous statement via Instagram, Joel's team explained why he had to cancel his concerts, sharing that his brain disorder became worse after performing, which led 'to problems with hearing, vision and balance.' 'Under his doctor's instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during his recovery period.' 6 Billy Joel in concert in Connecticut. Getty Images 'Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health. He is grateful for the support from fans during this time,' they continued, 'and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage.' Joel said in his own statement, 'I'm sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding.' Before his diagnosis, the singer fell during a February concert in Connecticut, as seen in a video posted by a fan. 6 Billy Joel and wife Alexis and kids. billyjoel/Instagram In the clip, Joel stumbled on the stage before falling backward and landing on his side. He then got up and continued with the show. The Grammy winner's eldest daughter, Alexa, whom he shares with ex-wife Christie Brinkley, took to her own social media page earlier this week to share a touching tribute to her father amid his diagnosis. 'We love you and we got you, Pop! I just wanted to thank you all for the beautiful outpouring of love and support amid the recent news of My Father's health diagnosis,' the 39-year-old said on Instagram. 'My Dad is the strongest and most resilient man I've ever known … and he's entirely committed to making a full recovery with ongoing physical-therapy treatments as he continues to regain his strength.' Joel's wife, meanwhile, has also been vocal about her own health struggles, recently opening up about how her other half has stood by her side as she lives with endometriosis. 6 Billy Joel and Alexis Joel. Getty Images for The Everglades Foundation 'He's extremely supportive,' Alexis told Fox New Digital earlier this month. 'So picking up where I leave off and covering my deficits during that time was huge. We're just always researching — he'll email me articles like, 'Did you know that this happens with endometriosis?'' The disease causes tissue to grow outside the uterus and can lead to chronic pain. 'Never in a million years would I think that he would be sending me that kind of stuff, but when you're watching someone suffer, you pick up,' Alexis said. 'You have to. It's what we do. We're a family.' The mom of two was raising her daughters while accompanying Joel on tour, which was hard to balance while dealing with her endometriosis diagnosis. 'I was doing it, but I was not doing it very well,' she confessed. 6 Billy Joel performs at Lucas Oil Stadium on February 08, 2025 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Getty Images for ABA 'So, especially with kids, if you've ever traveled with children and done a time zone change, that alone is an insane situation,' she continued. 'So, if you add in also having a husband, that requires time and attention — you know, he's working, we're not vacationing. And me going through what I'm going through, it was really rough. 'Luckily, when he's touring, we have a lot of support, which was really helpful,' Alexis recalled. 'And it was huge. So I'm lucky in that I do have people to help me. And you have to, because you reach your limit. I mean, there's nothing you can do.'

Call HR! I'm Obsessed With Wacky Work Ties

Is that a fish? The other week, I was mindlessly scrolling on Instagram before bed (as one does), when a curious post stopped me dead in my tracks. It wasn't the headless man wearing a striped shirt that caught my eye, but rather the unconventional tie that he sported around his neck. Was I looking at a pink grouper fish tie? Wacky and wonderful—I was instantly intrigued. Turns out, novelty ties are exactly what the Bangkok-based brand Tie a Knot specialize in. Rather than being a professional and sleek work accessory, the emerging label is making the case for the tie as more of a statement piece. I scrolled further through its delightfully-weird page, and discovered plenty of whimsical styles shaped like lizards, sharks, eels, and yes, more fish. In other words, certainly not the traditional humdrum ties that your dad or accountant wears to the office. Photo: Courtesy of @tie.a_knot Photo: Courtesy of @tie.a_knot On a more tame level, we also saw spirited tie styling on the high-fashion runways this season. Wacky ties, it seems, are in. Louis Vuitton layered a striped tie underneath bijoux necklaces; Saint Laurent clashed polka-dottie ties with striped shirts. KidSuper even had ties adorned with Scrabble tiles. Sure, these may not be as wild as the Jaws-style shark tie—dun dun!—that Tie a Knot recently debuted, but its more the spirit of all these crazy ties that I am into for the summer. Adding an eccentric tie to your look is the perfect subversion to a 9-to-5 outfit. Who says you can't infuse your work wardrobe with a little fun? If wearing a solid or classic striped tie is conforming to the rigid rules of the corporate world, a wackadoodle fish tie is the sartorial version of sticking it to the man! The ties embrace individuality, uniqueness, fun. Basically, take this away from the trend: Remember in Zoolander when Mugatu proudly proclaimed that he invented the piano key necktie? Channel that energy when purchasing your next tie. Everyone might not get it, but don't be afraid to set trends and take risks. Your cushy desk job might be boring, but your tie doesn't have to be.
