Police officer, 44, with nearly 20 years on the force dies suddenly after being arrested for sending sensitive information

Daily Mail12-07-2025
A police officer, who spent nearly two decades on the force, has suddenly died while on bail after being arrested for sending sensitive information.
PC Claire Browne had previously been arrested following a probe into the sending of sensitive police information from her work email to her personal account.
Before her death, the 44-year-old mother had been served notice of a gross misconduct investigation into her 'honesty and integrity'
She had worked for Hampshire and the Isle of WIght Constabulary since 2006 and was based in the city of Southampton.
PC Browne was found by colleagues at a property in Netley Abbey, Hampshire on the morning of July 7 after concerns were raised for her welfare.
Despite the best efforts of emergency services, she could not be saved. Her death has since sparked an independent review of the force's Professional Standards Department.
Her family have since released a touching tribute, saying: 'It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our much-loved Claire.
'She was a dedicated officer who served the force and the community diligently and compassionately for 19 years.
'Claire will be sorely missed by her many friends and colleagues.
'Our family is devastated and we ask for understanding, kindness and privacy during this incredibly difficult time.'
The 44-year-old is the second the second serving police officer to die whilst under investigation by Hampshire Constabulary's Professional Standards Department.
Last February, PC Alex Hazlett-Beard who was a part of the same police force died while under investigation for misconduct.
Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones has now ordered an independent review of the department which investigates officer's conduct.
'Recent events have understandably raised questions and concerns among officers, staff, and the wider public about how the force handles internal investigations,' the elected official said.
'While the force has appropriately referred this matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), I believe it is also necessary to examine more broadly how the Professional Standards Department operates, particularly in terms of support provided to officers under investigation and the culture of those investigations.'
She continued: 'This review will not interfere with any ongoing investigations or statutory processes but will help the force and me as commissioner to better understand whether the current systems are appropriate, proportionate, and supportive.'
Acting Chief Constable Sam de Reya also paid tribute to the 'well loved and respected officer'.
She said: 'Everyone is extremely shocked and saddened by Claire's death and our thoughts remain with her family, friends and colleagues.
'Claire was a well loved and respected officer and colleague who had worked in many different departments and teams throughout her policing career.
'She will be missed by us all.'
The senior figure has also issued a video message to staff across the force outlining where to access support.
Hampshire Constabulary have referred themselves to police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
A spokesperson said: 'Officers responded to a concern for welfare call at an address in Netley Abbey, at 11am, on Monday 7 July.
'Upon arrival officers discovered a 44-year-old woman requiring medical attention. Sadly, despite the best efforts of emergency services, she was pronounced dead at the address.
'The death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

BREAKING NEWS Idiot thug steals a Woolworths truck before leading police on a wild chase - what happened next has stunned the city

A man has been arrested following a dramatic police pursuit across Sydney, after he assaulted a Woolworths truck driver with a stun device and stole the vehicle. The chaos began on Olympic Parade in Bankstown, where police say a 23-year-old truck driver was attacked and had his truck stolen in broad daylight. He was initially taken to Bankstown Police Station before paramedics transported him to hospital for further treatment. Police quickly launched a search and eventually located the stolen truck on the Princes Highway at Rockdale. When officers tried to stop it, the driver refused to pull over, triggering a pursuit. The chase tore through Wolli Creek, where the truck allegedly slammed into four parked cars without stopping. With growing safety concerns, police made the call to terminate the pursuit as the truck veered onto the M8 motorway. With the help of PolAir, officers tracked the truck westbound as it continued onto the M4, barreling down the highway before police laid down road spikes on the Great Western Highway at Glenbrook. The vehicle finally came to a stop at Blaxland, where officers arrested the driver after deploying a Taser, with support from the Dog Unit and the Public Order and Riot Squad.

Five Met officers in court over Christmas party brawl

Five Met Police officers appeared in court charged with affray after their Christmas party in London ended up in a fight with Romanians celebrating their national holiday. Kellsey Millar, 32, Jack Sparkes, 34, Max Michaels-Dubois, 33, Daniel Dean, 38, and Alex Fackerell, 31, all attached to the Metropolitan Police's Territorial Support Group, had been drinking heavily before they boarded a river boat for their Christmas party on December 1, 2023. When it docked later that evening the group headed to the Southbank in central London. Alex Fackerell JACK TAYLOR FOR THE TIMES Daniel Dean JACK TAYLOR FOR THE TIMES Jack Sparkes JACK TAYLOR FOR THE TIMES Inner London crown court was told that Fackerell got into a fight with a group of Romanian men and had his 'head busted open' after being hit with a bottle, kicked and stamped on. While he was being treated at Las Iguanas restaurant a different group of Romanians walked past and asked if he was OK. His colleagues allegedly became 'aggressive' and began fighting with the group, the jury was told. CCTV showed some of the male defendants allegedly throwing punches and pushing a man, 'causing [him] to go backwards sharply'. The violent scenes lasted three-and-a-half minutes. Millar was blocked from entering the restaurant and allegedly grabbed Jheanelle Samuels, a female security guard, and 'kneed her in her left thigh'. Samuels punched the officer in the eye in self-defence to 'get her grip off me' in accordance with her training, she said. Millar, Sparkes, Michaels-Dubois, Dean and Fackerell deny affray. Millar has pleaded not guilty to a separate charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Samuels gave evidence on Tuesday and said her role was to 'keep everyone safe and make sure there are no intoxicated people coming inside'. She was aware it was 'Great Union Day', a Romanian national holiday, because several members of the public were draped in the country's flag. She spotted an injured Fackerell and allegedly overheard him say: 'I started on one of them and I didn't know there were more and they jumped in.' She said this 'gave me the assumption that's how he got his head injury'. Samuels ran to get a first aid kit and said three Romanians — two men and a woman — walked past and asked Fackerell if he was OK. Samuels said some of the officers had an 'aggressive reaction' and asked 'were you the ones who did it?' before punches were thrown. Samuels told the court: 'I saw the Romanians were outnumbered. I thought it was unfair for them to be beaten up so I tried to defuse the situation … I said: 'Stop — get off him. Leave him alone.'' But there were 'multiple fights' and 'one of them had a Romanian in a headlock', the security guard added. Millar allegedly grabbed Samuels and screamed: 'No.' Philip Stott, for the prosecution, asked Samuels what happened and she said Millar 'pushed me back and then she grabbed me and kneed me in my left thigh'. Michaels-Dubois allegedly barged through the group and asked 'What happened?' before he 'shoved' Samuels. She continued: 'I tried to walk away and he kept trying to follow me. [A] witness to the incident had to create a distance between me and him.' Stott asked the security guard how she felt. 'I was in serious pain. I was limping and had to retreat,' she said. 'At that point I saw they were beginning to scatter. I believe they had heard the police had been called.' Samuels, who is 5ft 2in tall, had martial arts training when she was younger but said she no longer uses it. She is an accredited guard by the Security Industry Authority, the court was told. Kevin Molloy, the barrister representing Sparkes, asked during cross-examination: 'Were you taught to punch people in the face as part of your training?' Samuels replied: 'We are told we can self-defend if necessary.' The trial continues.
