‘We stand united against terror': Mamata backs Centre after Operation Sindoor

The Hindu07-05-2025
Hours after the Indian Armed Forces carried out 'Operation Sindoor', targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday (May 7, 2025) extended her support to the Union government, asserting that the State stands 'shoulder to shoulder' with the Centre in the fight against terrorism.
'We are together in the war on terror. There should not be any differences among us,' Ms. Banerjee said at a press conference held at the State Secretariat. The Trinamool Congress chief had earlier hailed the military operation with the slogans 'Jai Hind! Jai India!'

Ms. Banerjee also took part in a virtual meeting convened by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, which saw the participation of Chief Ministers from other border States. Emphasising the need for public calm, she urged media organisations to exercise restraint and report only verified information. 'There is no need to panic. Please do not spread misinformation,' she said.
To ensure preparedness in light of the current security scenario, the Chief Minister announced the activation of disaster management cells in both Nabanna, the Kolkata-based State Secretariat, and Uttar Kanya, the North Bengal secretariat. She also appealed to English-medium private schools to begin their summer recess earlier than scheduled, from May 9, coinciding with Rabindra Jayanti, as a precautionary measure. State-run schools, she said, had already declared holidays.
Trinamool general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee lauded the armed forces for their 'unmatched bravery and extraordinary valour.' In a post on social media, he shared a photograph of Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, and Colonel Sofiya Qureshi addressing a media briefing on the operation. 'This powerful image reaffirms India's unity in the face of external attempts to divide us,' he said.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari described the day as one of 'immense satisfaction,' crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the armed forces for the successful strike. Calling the name 'Operation Sindoor' apt, in the context of the April 22 attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Mr. Adhikari said, 'The people of the country should also strike against anti-national forces and tukde-tukde gangs.'

Pb withdrawal of land pooling policy is victory of farmers: BJP

Chandigarh: Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma on Tuesday said the withdrawal of the land pooling policy by the AAP government is a big victory for farmers and labourers, and that his party's protests put pressure on the state government. He said his party took a clear stand against this scheme from day one that it would not allow acquisition of even an inch of farmers' land. In the face of mounting pressure from farmer bodies and opposition parties, the Punjab government on Monday withdrew its land pooling policy, which it had once termed 'farmer-friendly'. The Punjab BJP on Tuesday held celebrations over the rolling back of the policy. 'Punjab and Punjabiyat have won. It is a big victory of farmers and labourers,' Sharma told reporters here. From day one, when the policy was released, the BJP took a clear stand that it would not let the AAP government acquire even an inch of land, he said. He further accused AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain of 'looting' Punjab. 'Today, everybody knows Punjab is not run by Punjabis,' he said, claiming that AAP leaders sitting in Delhi call the shots. 'They (Delhi-based AAP leaders) brought the land pooling policy to loot Punjab,' the BJP leader charged. 'The BJP held protests at tehsil, block and district levels against the policy. We were to hold a protest, 'Zameen Bachao, Kisan Bachao' in Patiala on August 17. All these things put pressure on the state government,' Sharma said. He demanded that the state government issue a notification about scrapping of the policy. He said, 'Will Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann make a statement to ensure that not even a single inch of land of farmers will be acquired through any other way?' In a brief statement issued on Monday evening, the principal secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development said, 'The government hereby withdraws the land pooling policy dated May 14 and its subsequent amendments.' 'Consequently, all actions, like LOIs (letters of intent) issued, registration done, or any other action taken thereunder shall be reversed henceforth,' the statement said.

State poised to lead India's quantum technology push: Raichur MP

Bengaluru: Karnataka is ready to play a leading role in shaping India's quantum technology land-scape, Raichur MP G. Kumar Naik told the Lok Sabha on Monday while welcoming the Centre's decision to invest in the National Quantum Mission (NQM). Speaking under Rule 377, Naik stressed the need for better coordination, a clear im-plementation roadmap, and cooperative federalism to ensure that the mission delivers measurable outcomes. Drawing lessons from India's semiconductor programme, he warned against the risk of ambitious projects stalling despite large budget allocations. Naik highlighted Karnataka's early strides in the sector, including the announcement of a Rs1,000-crore Quantum Fund — the first of its kind in the country — and a compre-hensive vision for quantum technology development under Chief Minister Siddara-maiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. He credited State Science and Technology Minister N.S. Boseraju for conceptualising and executing the inaugural Quantum India Summit 2025 in Bengaluru, which brought together Nobel Laureates, global experts, industry leaders, and researchers. Key state initiatives include a dedicated Quantum Research Park and Q-City, Fabline, quantum coursework in over 20 colleges, and a strong startup ecosystem. Karnataka produces more than 91,000 quantum-relevant graduates annually, second only to the EU, Naik said. Boseraju added that the success of the national mission depends on the State and Centre working 'hand-in-hand' with shared vision, strategic coordination, and sus-tained investment in talent and infrastructure.

For this year's edition, more than five lakh young people have registered as volunteers to inspire citizens to participate in the nationwide celebration. Several events are being organised across the nation as part of the campaign. On Tuesday, a Har Ghar Tiranga rally was flagged off from Delhi's Bharat Mandapam with an aim to encourage citizens to bring the Tricolour home and hoist it in celebration of India's Independence Day.
