5 Dolphins defenders raising their stock in training camp, preseason
The consensus from reporters on both sides was that the Lions got the better of the Dolphins.
But practices aren't the ultimate measure of regular-season success, and there were notable performances from Dolphins players fighting to make the 53-man roster:
LB Derrick McLendon
Signed by Miami to a futures contract in January, McLendon enters his second NFL season and is impressing this month. He recorded two tackles for loss, including a sack, against the Bears, and followed it up with another strong practice in Detroit on Wednesday.
McLendon is making a strong case for a roster spot and could have one if his ascension continues. A solid performance in Saturday's game could seal his chances.
LB Grayson Murphy
Murphy recorded a sack of his own against the Bears and has emerged as a playmaker. The second-year undrafted signee missed all of 2024 on injured reserve but was a promising prospect last summer before the setback.
DL Jordan Phillips
At just 21 years old, Phillips has plenty of potential to be a valuable member of the Dolphins' defensive line for years to come. His strong outing in Chicago, combined with a solid practice in Detroit, has him looking like a steal as a fifth-round pick out of Maryland.
Phillips could be in line for substantial snaps in defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver's rotation. As he showed against the Bears, Phillips has outstanding leverage and the ability to take on multiple blockers while still making plays, such as a goal-line stop over the weekend.
His stats may not pop off the page, but his space-eating ability and knack for freeing up teammates could significantly boost Miami's front seven.
LB Eugene Asante
Known for speed and relentless pursuit of ball carriers, the undrafted rookie is making a push for the 53-man roster. Asante showcased his quickness and physicality on Sunday, finishing with three solo tackles and an assist.
While he was flagged for what officials deemed a hit on a defenseless receiver while trying to prevent a Bears first down, and his effort can't be knocked. It continued into a solid day in Detroit on Wednesday.
Asante also brings special teams value, having excelled in that phase during college. At minimum, Asante looks like a strong candidate for the practice squad and could even push a fringe veteran for a roster spot. Miami has kept at least one UDFA on the roster for four straight seasons—Asante could make it five.
CB Ethan Bonner
Third-year boundary cornerback Ethan Bonner has impressed during the summer in each of his years with the Dolphins, and 2025 has been no exception. It was Bonner's pass deflection against the Bears that landed in the hands of safety Patrick McMorris for an interception.
In a thin and largely unproven cornerback room, Bonner could be in line to make the roster and see significant playing time in 2025.

Peralta allows 1 hit in 6 innings and Brewers beat Cubs 7-0 in 1st half of doubleheader
CHICAGO (AP) — Freddy Peralta allowed one hit and struck out six batters and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 7-0 in the first half of a Monday doubleheader. All-Star pitcher Peralta (15-5, 2.78 ERA) shut Chicago out over six innings to help Milwaukee advance to an MLB-best record of 79-45. The Brewers, which had their franchise-record 14-game winning streak snapped by the Reds on Sunday, have won 23 of 28 games since the break. Brice Turang and Caleb Durbin each had two hits, two RBIs and a solo home run to lead the way. Milwaukee's Abner Uribe, Jared Koenig and Grant Anderson held Chicago to one combined hit over the final three innings of relief. The Brewers attacked Cubs pitcher Cade Horton (7-4, 3.08) early. After Turang's homer in the third, Horton allowed three of the next four batters to reach base and was removed from the game with a blister on his right middle finger. Reliever Drew Pomeranz retired the ensuing batter to escape the inning with a one-run deficit. Chicago called up two hitters on Monday in Luke Little and Gavin Hollowell. Little's throwing error in the sixth allowed a run to score, while Hollowell gave up four earned runs on four walks and two hits in the seventh. Key moment Down 1-0, the Cubs had an opportunity to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Peralta walked three consecutive batters to load the bases with one out, but he struck out rookie Owen Caissie and retired Nico Hoerner to end the inning. Key stat Milwaukee surrendered just two hits to Chicago, which drops nine games behind the Brewers in the National League Central. Up next The Cubs and Brewers are set to play the second half of Monday's doubleheader at 7:05 p.m. CT. Neither team had named its starting pitcher. Chicago and Milwaukee will continue the series until Thursday. ___ AP MLB:

Why isn't Brian Robinson playing? Commanders sit RB amid trade rumors
The Washington Commanders are set to play the Cincinnati Bengals on "Monday Night Football" to close Week 2 of the 2025 NFL preseason. The Commanders will be without a couple of key offensive players during the contest. Notably, quarterback Jayden Daniels will sit out the game as Washington looks to preserve the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year for 2024. Perhaps more interestingly, Brian Robinson Jr. will be out of action as the fourth-year running back has become the subject of trade rumors with NFL roster cuts rapidly approaching. Here's what to know about Robinson's absence and what it may mean for the Commanders. Why isn't Brian Robinson Jr. playing today? Robinson and the Commanders reached a "mutual decision" for him not to play in the team's preseason game against the Bengals, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. Robinson had been subject to trade rumors in the lead-up to the preseason "Monday Night Football" clash between the Commanders and Bengals. Washington could opt to trade the fourth-year back, who led its committee approach over the last three seasons. Keeping Robinson out of Monday's game will ensure he remains healthy as the Commanders attempt to trade him. It isn't clear whether Washington will find a suitor for the 25-year-old or if they will cut him if they cannot find a suitable trade. BRIAN ROBINSON LANDING SPOTS: 49ers, Cowboys among best fits Commanders RB depth chart The Commanders currently have seven players on their roster at running back. Below is the projected pecking order among the group, according to the team's most recent depth chart: If the Commanders do move on from Robinson, Ekeler would likely retain his role as the top pass-catching back. Meanwhile, McNichols and Rodriguez would likely be first in line to take on Robinson's role as an early-down back. Croskey-Merritt would be the wild card of the group, as he has the most upside among the players on the roster. The seventh-round rookie has flashed during training camp and could emerge as a key part of the rotation in short order. Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury has spoken glowingly of Washington's running back depth. "All six or seven guys in there have a place in this league," Kingsbury said recently, per ESPN. "They all have dynamic traits, all have things to do really well and guys when they had their opportunity have played at a high level. It's a deep group and we just got to see how it shakes out."

Adam Schefter Drops Major Hint on Shedeur Sanders' Browns Future
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. In what was arguably the worst-kept news in the NFL, the Cleveland Browns named former Super Bowl champion Joe Flacco as their starting quarterback on Monday. The news was expected ever since the 40-year-old passer signed a one-year, $4 million deal back in April to step into the void left by Deshaun Watson, who suffered his second Achilles injury and is expected to miss the 2025 season after playing just seven games last season before suffering a season-ending Achilles tear in Week 7. Given the team's unfortunate luck with injuries, especially under center, Cleveland loaded up on QBs to compete with Flacco, trading for former Pittsburgh Steelers first-round pick Kenny Pickett and drafting former Oregon star Dillon Gabriel in the third round of the 2025 NFL draft, and ex-Colorado star Shedeur Sanders two rounds after Gabriel. More NFL: Johnny Manziel Sends Clear Message to Shedeur Sanders Amid Browns QB Battle Both rookies each got a start during the preseason, and while both had their moments, neither showed they were ready to unseat Flacco atop the depth chart. Though Cleveland's QB1 is official, the second- and third-string positions have yet to be determined. And while most believed the Browns would take three QBs into the season and either cut or trade on of their rookies, ESPN's Adam Schefter believes that's not the case. Shedeur Sanders #12 of the Cleveland Browns is greeted by a member of the Philadelphia Eagles after the NFL Preseason 2025 game between Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on August 16,... Shedeur Sanders #12 of the Cleveland Browns is greeted by a member of the Philadelphia Eagles after the NFL Preseason 2025 game between Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on August 16, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Cleveland Browns defeated the Philadelphia Eagles NFL: Chiefs Lose First-Round Pick to Season-Ending Injury "Even though they named their starter today, and we don't know their backup, I expect the Cleveland Browns to carry four quarterbacks," Schefter said on "NFL Live" on Monday. "Four quarterbacks on their final 53-man roster. "I expect they'll have four there, they're going to keep both rookies, they're going to keep Flacco, so we're really talking about Kenny Pickett, and I really expect he makes the roster because quarterbacks are currency. ... Or maybe somebody calls about one of the rookie quarterbacks." There's an increasing feeling that the Browns will carry four quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 18, 2025 More NFL: 49ers Could Face NFL Punishment Over Brandon Aiyuk Decision Schefter's prediction is good news for Sanders, who many believed was ranked fourth out of four by the Browns for the entirety of camp and the preseason. The 23-year-old threw for 138 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions in the Browns' preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers, and many agreed that he outshined Gabriel, who threw for 143 yards and an interception in last week's game against the Philadelphia Eagles. There's no question Sanders has been immensely popular among Browns fans since he was picked 144th overall back in April. Sanders leads all rookies in jersey sales since the draft, and his preseason debut was the most-watched preseason game on NFL Network in over a decade (2.2 million viewers), according to Yahoo Sports.
