Egypt's FM, US Senator Tim Sheehy discuss bilateral ties, war in Gaza
CAIRO – 1 June 2025: Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty received Republican Senator Tim Sheehy, a member of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, during his visit to Egypt, on Saturday.
The meeting focused on ways to enhance the strategic partnership between Egypt and the United States, and on expanding cooperation in the political, economic, military, and technical fields. Minister Abdelatty expressed his aspiration for deeper coordination with the U.S. administration and both houses of US Congress in support of advancing bilateral relations that serve the mutual interests of both countries.
He also emphasized Egypt's commitment to strengthening economic, trade, and investment cooperation, highlighting the outcomes of the Egyptian-American Economic Forum, held in Cairo on May 25–26, which saw the participation of leading American companies.
Minister Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's ongoing efforts to promote security and stability in the Middle East, stressing that the Egypt-U.S. partnership remains a cornerstone in supporting regional peace and stability.
The two sides exchanged views on a range of regional developments, including the situation in Gaza, where Minister Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's ongoing coordination with the United States and Qatar to achieve a ceasefire and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people. He firmly reiterated Egypt's rejection of any attempts to forcibly displace Palestinians from their land.
The meeting also touched on the positive impact of recent de-escalation efforts in the Red Sea on maritime security and international trade routes, underscoring the importance of continued cooperation to preserve regional stability.

Egypt reaffirms ban on industrial projects on farmland, in residential areas
In a continued effort to boost industrial development while preserving vital resources, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel Al-Wazir held a meeting with investors in Beheira to address challenges facing the region's industrial zones and explore practical solutions. During the meeting, officials reviewed the implementation status of Beheira's three approved industrial zones, which span a total of 1,162.47 feddans. These include the Wadi El-Natrun Industrial Zone, covering 519.47 feddans; the Al-Tarrana Industrial Zone in Hosh Issa, covering 346 feddans; and the Nubaria Industrial Zone, covering 297 feddans. The discussions focused on land allocation, operational readiness, the availability of utilities, and the progress of ongoing infrastructure work in each zone. Attention was also given to the textile and ready-made garments industrial zone in Kafr El-Dawar. This complex, extending over more than 618,000 square meters, currently houses 138 factories operated by 103 investors. The Minister emphasized the importance of completing infrastructure and utility connections in the area to support production readiness. Al-Wazir directed officials from the Ministry of Industry, the Industrial Development Authority, and the Beheira Governorate to intensify planning efforts aimed at localizing industries based on the specific resources and advantages of each region. He noted that strategic localization should focus on sectors that deepen local manufacturing, create employment opportunities, and enhance the added value of national resources. The Minister underscored the urgency of accelerating infrastructure and utility development, while streamlining bureaucratic procedures to facilitate the rapid operation of factories. He also reaffirmed the Egyptian state's commitment to prohibiting any industrial activity on agricultural land or within residential areas, in accordance with directives from President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi. These directives, he said, are crucial for preserving arable land and securing food supplies for future generations. Al-Wazir reiterated the government's commitment to genuine industrial development within properly designated and fully serviced zones, which offer a sustainable and regulated environment for growth. He encouraged serious investors to make use of the 1,800 industrial plots recently made available through Egypt's Digital Industrial Platform, stressing that suitable alternatives will always be offered within the planned zones. Calling on investors to prioritize the national interest, he described the preservation of agricultural land as a shared responsibility. During the meeting, several investors raised concerns about recurrent power outages and voltage fluctuations in the Wadi El-Natrun zone, which are disrupting factory operations. In response, Al-Wazir directed immediate coordination with the Ministry of Electricity and the relevant distribution companies to identify urgent and sustainable solutions. He also instructed the development of a clear technical plan to strengthen the area's electrical network and ensure stable power supply, thereby supporting uninterrupted industrial activity and preventing production delays.

Gaza situation 'intolerable': British PM Starmer
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Monday the situation in Gaza is 'getting worse day by day' and that it was essential to ensure more urgent humanitarian aid reaches the Palestinian territory. 'The situation is intolerable in Gaza, and it is getting worse day by day,' Starmer told reporters in Scotland, when asked if the United Kingdom would take any action on the issue. He added: 'That is why we are working with our allies… to be absolutely clear that humanitarian aid has to get in, and it has to get in quickly, and in quantities that it is not at the moment, which is causing such devastation.' The British government summoned the Israeli ambassador to London, Tzipi Hotovely, on May 20th regarding the expansion of military operations in the Gaza Strip. OPEN// FM applauds IAEA's role in achieving regional stability
CAIRO, June 2 (MENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty on Monday commended the vital role played by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in supporting regional security and stability through the promotion of nuclear non-proliferation principles and the expansion of peaceful uses of nuclear technology to advance sustainable development goals. Meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, Abdelatty expressed his appreciation for the significant achievements made by the IAEA chief since taking office at the end of 2019. He highlighted Grossi's active personal engagement in climate change-related conferences, most notably the 2022 Sharm El-Sheikh Climate Summit (COP27), which significantly contributed to international recognition of the positive role nuclear energy can play in combating climate change and adapting to its impacts. The minister also underscored Egypt's commitment to harnessing the peaceful uses of nuclear energy in support of national development, including through the El-Dabaa nuclear power plant project. He described the project as a key milestone in this effort, emphasizing Egypt's eagerness to strengthen its close cooperation with the IAEA and to leverage the Agency's technical expertise to ensure compliance with the highest international standards for nuclear safety and security. He added that this project is poised to unlock broader development prospects for Egypt. Abdelatty highlighted Egypt's contributions to nuclear non-proliferation and the peaceful use of nuclear energy at both regional and international levels. He stressed that Egypt has long been at the forefront of advocating for disarmament and non-proliferation, with the ultimate aim of achieving a world free of nuclear weapons. The top diplomat pointed out that the current imbalance in treaty commitments by states in the Middle East regarding non-proliferation has exacerbated regional instability. He noted that Israel remains the only state in the region that has not joined the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and continues to refuse to place all of its nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards. The minister emphasized the necessity of Israel joining the NPT as a non-nuclear-weapon state and expressed his hope that the IAEA Director General will intensify efforts to implement the annual resolution adopted by the IAEA General Conference on applying safeguards in the Middle East.
