Alabama football 2025 season preview, predictions: Kevin Riley

USA Today27-07-2025
Entering year two playing for his hometown team, could the 2025 season mark a breakout campaign for Alabama Crimson Tide running back Kevin Riley?
A native of the Tuscaloosa area, Riley is coming off a true freshman season a year ago in which he did not see much action for the Crimson Tide.
However, Riley came to Tuscaloosa as one of the highest-rated running backs in his recruiting class, and is a player who is certainly capable of emerging this season to potentially become a key contributor of Alabama's running back room.
Here is a look at everything you need to know about Alabama running back Kevin Riley entering the 2025 season.
Kevin Riley player information
Kevin Riley career stats
Entering year two of college football, Riley is coming off a true freshman season in which he did not play much for the Crimson Tide. Last season, Riley played in only two games where he rushed for 30 yards on 10 attempts, while also hauling in two receptions for nine yards.
Kevin Riley 2024 stats
As mentioned previously, Riley appeared in only two games during the 2024 season, which came against Western Kentucky and Mercer. Over that span, Riley rushed for 30 yards on 10 attempts, and caught two passes for nine yards.
Kevin Riley recruiting ranking
According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Riley came to Alabama considered as the nation's No. 75 overall prospect in the 2024 recruiting class, as well as the No. 3 running back nationally. Riley, a four-star prospect who committed to Alabama in Dec. 2023 when he flipped from Miami, was also ranked the No. 7 player in the state of Alabama where he attended Tuscaloosa County High School.
Kevin Riley 2025 season outlook
When taking a look at Riley's potential impact this season, it is currently an unknown surrounding what the former four-star prospect's role might be.
As to why, that is because Alabama's running back room returns two big names in starter Jam Miller and Richard Young, while also having added an experienced transfer in Dre Washington. However, Riley could also potentially emerge in that group as well, as the redshirt freshman could make an impact in multiple different ways from the running back position.
Overall, expect Riley to improve on his season totals from a year ago, and to be a backup option at running back who could potentially emerge later in the season.

Texas A&M's 2025 schedule considered one of the Top 10 toughest slates per USA TODAY

Texas A&M's 2025 schedule is considered one of the toughest slates in the SEC, as the Aggies will face LSU, Arkansas, Missouri, and Texas on the road, while their Week 3 rematch vs. Notre Dame in South Bend could define the program's season. For second-year head coach Mike Elko, last season's late-season failures on the road with consecutive losses at South Carolina and Auburn were too similar to the previous regime under Jimbo Fisher. On Wednesday, A&M's schedule was recognized as one of the toughest nationally, according to USA TODAY writer Jordan Mendoza, who released his top 10 most demanding college football schedules based on the recent US LBM preseason top 25 rankings. Texas A&M is No. 21 in the rankings, which was expected given the lack of national confidence in starting quarterback Marcel Reed. At the same time, the rest of the 2025 roster, including 14 transfer additions, is deep and talented enough to win nine or ten games, despite the schedule. While Florida's schedule is considered the toughest in the country, coming in at No. 1, Texas A&M's schedule is ranked 7th, primarily due to the road games I listed above. "The No. 21 ranked team in the preseason poll will be fighting all season to make sure it stays in the Top 25. The Aggies have a highly anticipated non-conference matchup on Sept. 13 at No. 5 Notre Dame. From there, there's four other ranked matchup sprinkled throughout the rest of the season, with No. 17 Florida visiting on Oct. 11 and a trip to face No. 9 LSU on Oct. 25. No. 13 South Carolina comes into town Nov. 15, and the season ends with the first trip to Austin since 2010 to play No. 1 Texas." Texas A&M needs to win at least one game between Notre Dame, LSU, and Texas, while defending home field against Florida and South Carolina is crucial to ending the regular season with a chance at reaching the playoff. Yes, Aggie fans would love revenge, especially on the road against Texas after last season's 17-7 loss in Kyle Field, but for that game to truly matter, outside of bragging rights, the path I laid out is the only way forward. Is Caitlin Clark playing tonight? Fever star's injury status vs Mercury

The Indiana Fever (17-13) return to play on Thursday at the Phoenix Mercury (18-11) in the final contest of a four-game road swing. Once again, the Fever will do so without star guard Caitlin Clark. Per WISH-TV's Angela Moryan, the second-year pro has officially been ruled out of her ninth straight regular season contest with her right groin injury. That now means Clark has missed 18 regular season games in 2025 with various injury ailments and 19 contests overall, including the WNBA Commissioner's Cup final. Clark's injury woes date to the preseason when she missed the Fever's opening preseason contest with a left leg injury. A subsequent left quadriceps injury cost Clark five games from May 28-June 10. Then a left groin injury sidelined Clark for four regular-season games and the WNBA Commissioner's Cup final. Limited to just 13 games thus far in 2025, Clark is averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, 5 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game on 36.7% field goal shooting and 27.9% 3-point accuracy. While fans won't see Clark return just yet on Thursday night, it does sound like Clark is making positive progress. On Sunday, ESPN reporter Holly Rowe said that Clark has begun to ramp up her conditioning work with the team. "Well, Stephanie White did give us a small update on Caitlin that she has started some full-court running, full-speed running the last four or five days. Still not doing full basketball activities, but there has been some progress made recently," Rowe reported. In a recent "NBA Today" appearance, Fever head coach Stephanie White commented on Clark's status and indicated the franchise will continue to practice precaution. "Yeah, I mean, it's day-to-day right now. We're really just putting no timetable on it, going through the rehab process and then we want to reintegrate her from a strength and conditioning standpoint and then get her back to basketball activities. "So, we're taking it one day at a time, really slow-rolling it, slow playing it this time. She tried to come back a couple of times and just had setbacks along the way, so the most important thing for us is Caitlin's long-term health, getting her back to 100 percent before we put her back on the floor," White said. Indiana is trying to rediscover the win column after the Los Angeles Sparks snapped a five-game winning streak on Tuesday night in a 100-91 Fever loss. The Sparks moved their season series tally against the Fever to 3-0, all in games where Clark was absent with injury. Tipoff between the Fever and Mercury is set for 9 p.m. CT with the game set to stream on Amazon Prime. Steelers' Aaron Rodgers opens up about Will Howard's injury at training camp

Disappointment was at an all-time high this year once the news of fan-favorite rookie Will Howard's broken finger got out — but if you ask 20-year veteran Aaron Rodgers, this is just a small road bump on the journey to becoming the Steelers' future starting QB. On Wednesday, reporters asked Rodgers to speak on Howard's injury setback — and the four-time MVP didn't mince words in explaining why 2025 is still a pivotal growth year for the rookie quarterback. 'I mean, it sucks,' Rodgers said. 'Sucks for him, for sure, 'cause he's had such a nice camp as a young player. And then watching him at minicamp and seeing his command of the offense. But this year is a growth year for him. It's a year to watch and learn — and obviously better himself. This will just be a minor setback for him. … This is a year for him to grow and learn — and get his body ready the way he wants to get it, and get ready to be the guy for a long time.' No one was writing off Howard's Steel City career after the broken finger, but Steelers fans were certainly disappointed after realizing they might not get to see him show off in preseason — and HC Mike Tomlin's injury update did little to change that. The new injury hasn't changed Rodgers' overall commitment to preparing Howard to take his place once he retires — in fact, it's just another opportunity to smile in the face of adversity.
