Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter Call Out Aaron Boone, Yankees After Loss to Marlins

Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter Call Out Aaron Boone, Yankees After Loss to Marlins originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There isn't a team under more pressure and a bigger microscope than the New York Yankees. While they hold a competitive 60-51 record, they're currently playing some of the sloppiest baseball of the season — and it's costing them. Just a few weeks ago, New York sat atop the AL East. But entering Sunday, after back-to-back losses to the Miami Marlins, they've slipped to third place behind the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox, trailing Toronto by 4 1/2 games. On Friday, the Yankees blew a 6-0 lead and lost 13-12, with three of their newly acquired trade deadline relievers giving up multiple earned runs. Then on Saturday, they were held scoreless in a 2-0 loss, highlighted by a costly baserunning blunder when Jazz Chisholm Jr. was doubled off at first base on an infield popup — a play that drew instant backlash from fans calling for manager Aaron Boone to bench him. Boone defended Chisholm postgame, but the scrutiny only intensified later that night when former Yankees legends Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter echoed the same frustrations during the "MLB on Fox" broadcast, criticizing the team's lack of accountability and overall sluggish play. 'You can't make this up,' Rodriguez said. 'I mean, look, you can bring in nine relievers, it's not going to make a difference. I don't care if you bring back their '98 bullpen with Mariano [Rivera], Mike Stanton, and Jeff Nelson, if your pitchers are going 3 1/3, 4 1/3 innings it's not going to work.' 'Where's the accountability?' Rodriguez added. 'If any one of us made a mistake, we would be sitting out right on the bench. I see mistake after mistake and there are no consequences.' Jeter echoed Rodriguez's honest, yet truthful comments about the 27-time World Series champions. 'They make way too many mistakes,' Jeter said. 'And you can't get away with making that number of mistakes against great teams. It just doesn't happen. They had baserunning mistakes today — you saw the guy getting thrown out at home plate. You can't continue to do it. You have to clean it up.' 'There are no excuses. You have to play better,' Jeter continued. 'If you don't play better, you're not going to go very far.'This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 3, 2025, where it first appeared.

The New York Yankees attempted to swing a deal with the Miami Marlins for their former Cy Young winner, Sandy Alcantara, but ultimately, no trade was made. According to MLB Insider Jon Heyman, the Marlins asked for either Spencer Jones or George Lombard Jr. from New York, but the Yankees refused to give up their No. 4 and No. 1 prospects. ST LOUIS, MISSOURI - JULY 29: Sandy Alcantara #22 of the Miami Marlins delivers a pitch against the St. Louis Cardinals in the first inning at Busch Stadium on July 29, 2025 in St Louis, Missouri. More Photo byAlcantara was expected to be moved at the trade deadline entering the season, but as the former Cy Young Award winner returned from injury, his performances weren't up to the standard he had set. The drop in performance likely caused interested teams to drop their price for the right-hander when the deadline came around, despite Alcantara rebounding slightly after the All-Star break. The Yankees were reportedly in the running for Alcantara as well as Edward Cabrera at this season's deadline but were unwilling to move two of their top five prospects to land a frontline starter at the deadline. Lombard Jr. is the team's top prospect and is not expected to arrive in the Bronx until 2027. Given shortstop Anthony Volpe's struggles this season, the Yankees likely want to keep Lombard Jr. around to take over at shortstop when he is ready. Jones was once one of the best two-way prospects but is now primarily playing outfield and is crushing at the minor league level this season. Jones has 29 home runs across two levels this year and is going to be pushing for a roster spot in spring training next season. The Yankees likely didn't want to sacrifice their future for a starter who has not pitched at the level he has in the past, as they look to keep their championship window open long term. It turned out well for Miami, too. The Marlins are 7-3 in their last 10 games, including a three-game sweep of ... the Yankees. 2025 MLB Odds: Bettors Believe Detroit Tigers Can Win AL Pennant

Major League Baseball 2025 MLB Odds: Bettors Believe Detroit Tigers Can Win AL Pennant Published Aug. 5, 2025 10:55 a.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Is 2025 the year of the Tiger? Bettors at one sportsbook would certainly argue that's the case when it comes to the AL Pennant race, because at BetMGM, they're backing Detroit in a big way. At +340, the Tigers are the favorite to win the AL. They also have the highest ticket at 22.1% and the highest handle at 19.4%. And if you guessed that Detroit is BetMGM's biggest liability when it comes to this market, you were right. But will bettors' enthusiasm translate to them winning the league? Let's dive into one expert's insight after taking a look at some of the Tigers' other odds at BetMGM as of Aug. 5. World Series +900 (bet $10 to win $100 total) American League Central Winner -10000 (bet $10 to win $10.10 total) World Series: Division of Winning Team AL Central: +700 (bet $10 to win $80 total) World Series: League of Winning Team American: +125 (bet $10 to win $22.50 total) ALCS: Division of Winning Team AL Central: +280 (bet $10 to win $38 total) Are the 66-48 Tigers actually a good bet to win the AL — especially since they're in a league with contenders like the Yankees and Blue Jays? According to FOX MLB writer Rowan Kavner, the organization fell slightly short of beefing up its roster with the necessary pieces at the trade deadline to make a real push. "Considering they've been one of the best teams in baseball all year, I expected them to more meaningfully address their deficiencies," Kavner wrote about the Tigers' trade deadline moves. "They could have used an elite piece at the back end. Instead, they opted to address their pitching issues with quantity over quality, favoring slight upgrades over major upside. ADVERTISEMENT "They should still cruise to a division title, but this felt like an opportunity missed." Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
