OBCs' marriage aid plan a big hit in UP

Time of India21-05-2025

Lucknow: The state govt's scheme to provide financial aid to couples from OBCs at the time of marriage is witnessing huge success.
Under this, govt provides Rs 20,000 to an OBC girl on her marriage.
According to data from the UP backward classes welfare department, the number of girls benefiting from this scheme nearly doubled in 2024-25 compared to the previous financial year.
While 55,551 girls were given aid in the previous year, the number surged to 1 lakh in 2024-25.
Minister of state (independent) for backward classes and empowerment of persons with disabilities Narendra Kashyap stated that the Yogi Adityanath govt's objective is to provide dignified marriage opportunities for daughters of poor OBC families.
"This scheme is more than just financial aid; it's a step toward ensuring equality and dignity. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath envisions a society where no daughter from a poor family feels overlooked on her wedding day.
We are moving steadily towards that goal. So far, over one lakh girls have benefited and we aim to significantly expand this reach in the coming years," he said.
An official said that the significant increase is primarily due to the revision of the income eligibility criteria.

Earlier, the eligibility was restricted to urban and rural families below the poverty line. The income limit is now raised to Rs 1 lakh, which has allowed more families to avail themselves of the scheme. The income eligibility has been standardised for both urban and rural beneficiaries.
In light of this change, the department has also substantially increased its budget. In 2024-25, the backward classes welfare department's budget was Rs 2,789.71 crore, an increase of Rs 451.08 crore from Rs 2,338.63 crore in 2023-24.
Govt plans to launch an extensive publicity campaign to ensure that the scheme reaches as many eligible individuals as possible.
The budget allocation for the backward classes welfare department has seen a major rise under the BJP govt's tenure. While the total expenditure from 2012–13 to 2016–17 stood at Rs 6,928.71 crore, it surged to Rs 14,969.55 crore between 2017–18 and 2025–26, an increase of Rs 8,040.84 crore.

Pentagon watchdog investigates if staffers were asked to delete Hegseth's Signal messages

The Pentagon watchdog is looking into whether any of Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth's aides was asked to delete Signal messages that may have shared sensitive military information with a reporter, according to two people familiar with the investigation and documents reviewed by The Associated Press. The inspector general's request focuses on how information about the March 15 airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen was shared on the messaging app. This comes as Hegseth is scheduled to testify before Congress next week for the first time since his confirmation hearing. He is likely to face questions under oath not only about his handling of sensitive information but also the wider turmoil at the Pentagon following the departures of several senior aides and an internal investigation over information leaks. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Roteirizador Pathfind - O planejador de rotas mais completo do mercado Sistema TMS embarcador Saiba Mais Undo Hegseth already has faced questions over the installation of an unsecured internet line in his office that bypassed the Pentagon's security protocols and revelations that he shared details about the military strikes in multiple Signal chats. One of the chats included his wife and brother, while the other included President Donald Trump 's top national security officials and inadvertently included The Atlantic's editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg. The people were not authorised to discuss the investigation and spoke on the condition of anonymity. Democratic lawmakers and a small number of Republicans have said that the information Hegseth posted to the Signal chats before the military jets had reached their targets could have put those pilots' lives at risk and that for any lower-ranking members of the military it would have led to their firing. Hegseth has said none of the information was classified. Multiple current and former military officials have said there is no way details with that specificity, especially before a strike took place, would have been OK to be shared on an unsecured device. "I said repeatedly, nobody is texting war plans," Hegseth told Fox News Channel in April after reporting emerged about the chat that included his family members. "I look at war plans every day. What was shared over Signal then and now, however you characterise it, was informal, unclassified coordinations, for media coordinations and other things. That's what I've said from the beginning." Trump has made clear that Hegseth continues to have his support, saying during a Memorial Day speech at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia that the defence secretary "went through a lot" but "he's doing really well." Hegseth has limited his public engagements with the press since the Signal controversy. He has yet to hold a Pentagon press briefing, and his spokesman has briefed reporters there only once. The inspector general is investigating Hegseth at the request of the Republican chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Sen Roger Wicker of Mississippi, and the committee's top Democrat, Sen Jack Reed of Rhode Island. Signal is a publicly available app that provides encrypted communications, but it can be hacked and is not approved for carrying classified information. On March 14, one day before the strikes against the Houthis, the Defence Department cautioned personnel about the vulnerability of the app. Trump has said his administration targeted the Houthis over their "unrelenting campaign of piracy, violence and terrorism." He has noted the disruption Houthi attacks caused through the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, key waterways for energy and cargo shipments between Asia and Europe through Egypt's Suez Canal. The Houthi rebels attacked more than 100 merchant vessels with missiles and drones, sinking two vessels and killing four sailors, between November 2023 until January this year. Their leadership described the attacks as aimed at ending the Israeli war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Senior leader from Maoist's Telangana committee killed in Indravati National Park encounter

A day after security forces recovered the body of a senior Maoist leader after an encounter in Indravati National Park in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, the body of yet another leader from the banned outfit's Telangana state committee has now been found. The body was recovered from the encounter that broke out in Indravati National Park in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district Thursday morning, officials have said. This is the third encounter this year in the national park and brings the total gunned down in them to 45. 'The deceased Maoist is identified as 45-year-old Bhaskar @ Mailarapu Adellu. He is a Special Zonal Committee (SZC) Member of the Telangana State Committee,' Bastar range Inspector General of Police Sundarraj P said. A resident of Urumadla village in Telangana's Adilabad district, Bhaskar was the secretary of the Mancherial-Komarambheem (MKB) division of the Telangana State Committee of the banned CPI (Maoist) outfit. He had a bounty of Rs 45 lakh — Rs 25 lakh in Chhattisgarh and 20 lakh in Telangana. 'An AK-47 rifle along with other explosives, weapons, and ammunition have been recovered from the encounter site,' Bijapur Superintendent of Police Jitendra Yadav said. This is the second significant death in this encounter after central committee member Thentu Laxmi Narasimha Chalam alias Sudhakar, 66, was killed Thursday. Hours after the killing, a group of Maoists stopped a transport vehicle and set it on fire in retaliation. This comes nearly a fortnight after Nambala Keshava Rao, alias Basava Raju, the general secretary of the CPI (Maoist), was gunned down in an encounter along with 27 others in the jungles of Abujhmad region in Narayanpur district on May 21. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has set a deadline of March 2026 to eradicate Left Wing Extremism (LWE) from India. The security forces this year till date have 202 Maoists, of which 185 were in Bastar region alone — Bijapur is a part of Bastar region. This year has also seen the death of 17 security personnel in attacks by Maoists.

Thackeray vs Thackeray no more? Uddhav's 'people's wish' sparks Sena (UBT)-MNS merger buzz

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Friday said, 'Whatever the people of Maharashtra wish will happen,' fueling speculation about a possible alliance with his estranged cousin Raj Thackeray 's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). The two parties, which fared poorly in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, have become the focus of renewed chatter ahead of civic body polls . Uddhav, speaking to reporters, maintained that there was no confusion among workers of either party regarding a potential tie-up, though he sidestepped questions on whether talks were underway. The MNS was founded by Raj Thackeray in 2006 after breaking away from the unified Shiv Sena, and relations between the two cousins have been frosty since. However, signs of a thaw have emerged in recent days. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Rates Undo Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, a close aide of Uddhav, hinted at some form of contact, saying there may have been phone calls between the cousins but refused to elaborate. From the MNS camp, Mumbai unit chief Sandeep Deshpande called for a formal approach from Uddhav Thackeray's party to initiate alliance talks. 'Let them send a proposal or at least make a phone call,' Deshpande said, recalling past attempts by the MNS to forge a partnership during the 2014 Assembly and 2017 civic polls. Live Events Thane MNS president Avinash Jadhav added, 'If Uddhav takes one step, Raj will take 100,' while underlining that political alliances are not formed in front of the cameras. Recent statements by both sides have indicated a softening stance. Raj Thackeray has said uniting for the cause of the Marathi manoos is not difficult, and Uddhav Thackeray has said he is willing to overlook 'trivial fights' as long as Maharashtra's interests are not compromised. MNS leader Amit Thackeray on Thursday echoed the sentiment, saying alliances are not stitched together through press statements, but through direct talks. Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray earlier said, 'If anyone wants to come together to protect Maharashtra's interest, we will also take them along.' Asked about the brewing developments, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis dismissed the speculation, saying it was up to Raj Thackeray to respond to Uddhav's remarks. 'How am I concerned? It's for them to decide,' he told reporters in Gadchiroli. Deputy CM and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde, whose party is part of the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance, refrained from commenting on the possible Sena (UBT)-MNS tie-up. However, he said the Mahayuti would sweep the civic polls. Deputy CM and NCP leader Ajit Pawar also distanced himself from the matter. 'Raj leads the MNS and Uddhav leads Shiv Sena (UBT). Whether the 'railway engine' and the 'mashaal' come together is for them to decide,' he said, referring to the two parties' poll symbols. Meanwhile, Congress, an ally of the Shiv Sena (UBT), has cautiously welcomed the idea of an alliance between the two Thackeray factions. 'If they come together to protect Maharashtra's interests and keep a communal BJP away, we will welcome the move,' said Maharashtra Congress spokesperson Atul Londhe. With inputs from PTI
