Bootleg liquor unit busted in Suryapet

The Hindu22-07-2025
Two individuals were arrested and a large-scale spurious liquor unit in Ramapuram village housed in a rice mill in Suryapet district was uncovered following a raid by the State Task Force (STF) of the Telangana Prohibition and Excise Department.
Officials seized massive quantities of materials used in the production of adulterated liquor, including 38 Mc Dowell's whiskey quarter bottles, 38 cartons, 42.8 kilogram of whiskey bottle caps, 56.3 kg of generic caps, over 7,800 labels, six 200-litre steel jugs among others. The estimated value of the seized items is approximately ₹20 lakh.
The accused were identified as S. Mahesh Kumar from Durgi in Palnadu district, and Prakash, the owner of the rice mill in Ramapuram. Other suspects - Siva Shankar, Mallikarjun Rao, Sharanjit Singh, and R., are currently lodged in a jail in Andhra Pradesh.
Meanwhile, efforts are underway to trace Srinivas, alias Abdul Kalam, identified as a key figure in the racket.
According to Excise Enforcement Director Shahnawaz Qasim, the unit was using adulterated rice as part of the production process and was replicating branded products with counterfeit labels and packaging. He noted that similar operations had previously been exposed in Andhra Pradesh, where several individuals involved in fake liquor networks were arrested.
The department's vigilance stems from past incidents, including the 2022 episode in which residents in areas under Ibrahimpatnam, Bhongir, Ramannapet and Nampally excise stations reported stomach ailments after consuming suspected Royal Stag whisky. Investigations then revealed counterfeit liquor in circulation.

Elvish Yadav's Gurugram residence under Police watch after firing incident; Patrolling intensified in area: Report

It's been two days since a firing incident was reported outside Big Boss OTT winner Elvish Yadav's residence in Gurugram, Haryana. Amid this, reportedly, the Gurugram police have beefed up security at the YouTuber's Sector 57 residence. Recently, three motorcycle-borne people with fun allegedly fired over two dozen rounds outside his home on Sunday morning. According to a report of Hindustan Times, a team of four armed personnel has been stationed at the house round the clock in shifts, while area patrolling has also been intensified. 'The deployment will remain in place until further orders. The incident is being probed from multiple angles, including the possibility of extortion by gangsters,' said Sandeep Kumar, spokesperson for Gurugram police, told the portal. He also said that officials are also probing the credentials of an Instagram post in which the Bhau gang claimed responsibility for the gunfire incident. It is alleged that Yadav promoted betting apps that financially ruined several families, which caused the incident. 'We are investigating to ascertain who had posted it and from which location,' also quoted the report. Police said senior officials believe the post may have been an attempt to mislead the investigation. Reportedly, more than 10 teams from the Haryana Police Special Task Force (STF), crime branch, and district police have been deployed to trace the suspects involved in the firing incident at Elvish Yadav's residence. It is claimed that the teams are conducting raids across Haryana as well as in neighbouring Rajasthan and Delhi after the incident. If the report is true, the Police also looked into possible connections with the July 14 attack on Yadav's friend, Haryanvi singer Rahul Yadav, alias Fazilpuria, which was reportedly linked to a ₹ 5-crore financial dispute with gangster Sunil Sardhaniya. However, no link between the two matters has been found, as per the report. Following the incident, Elvish Yadav took to his social media handles and shared that he and his family are safe. He thanked people for their concern and said, "I would like to extend my sincere gratitude for your good wishes. My family and I are safe and well. Your kind thoughts and concern are truly appreciated. Thank You." Reacting to the open firing news, Bigg Boss 13 fame Shefali Bagga expressed her shock on Instagram. She called the event "shocking," and questioned the role of the police and security authorities. "I am shocked beyond words at what has happened. And now, where is the police? Where is the security, the media, the authorities for support? These types of firings keep happening in our city, and we talk about freedom and security? Stay strong, Elvish," she wrote.

2-day statewide ops against drug traffickers

Bhubaneswar: The special task force (STF) of the state crime branch on Thursday launched a two-day statewide operations targeting drug traffickers in order to check drugs smuggling. The initiative comes following a recent directive from chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who has called for stringent measures to curb substance abuse across the state. During a review of the state's law and order situation on Tuesday, the CM emphasised the need for a robust approach against drug smugglers. He highlighted the importance of enhanced coordination with police forces from neighbouring states to prevent the influx of drugs into Odisha. "Our intensified crackdown will focus on a range of narcotics, from marijuana to synthetic drugs, with officers in plain clothes deployed in markets, shops and slums to monitor and intercept illegal activities," STF's SP Rabi Satapathy said. He added that special attention will be given to areas near educational institutes, where drug peddling is reportedly rampant. Students, largely targeted by traffickers, remain a significant concern for authorities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo In response to rising concerns about college students falling prey to narcotics, the commissionerate police in July 2023 had urged colleges and universities to implement urgent measures to ensure drug-free campuses, including hostels. This followed the arrest of several drug peddlers operating near educational institutes in the city. In a bid to further safeguard campuses, the govt has proposed the use of geofencing technology around educational institutes. This would restrict online food delivery services from distributing alcoholic beverages within designated zones around colleges and universities. According to Odisha police statistics, between 2020 and July 2025, Odisha police seized about 9,062 quintals of ganja and 169 kg of brown sugar across the state. During this period, 9,551 people were arrested for trafficking ganja and 2,996 for smuggling brown sugar, the data stated. Urban areas such as Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, Rourkela and Sambalpur are major hotspots for these substances. Ganja is typically transported from districts like Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Boudh, Kandhamal and Gajapati, while brown sugar is smuggled in from neighbouring West Bengal. The primary consumers include college students, businessmen and known criminals. To tackle drug trafficking and associated street crimes in slum areas, the commissionerate police launched the 'Basti Ku Chala' initiative in Jan 2021, aimed at building rapport with slum residents and gathering intelligence on peddlers. In Aug 2021, the city police introduced 'White Spider', a special anti-drug enforcement initiative, to address the drug menace in capital more effectively.
