Opal Chuangsri claims historic win as first Thai Miss World
The 22-year-old political science student and founder of the "Opal for Her" initiative, which supports women with breast cancer, competed against 108 contestants to become the first Thai to win the international title, according to the Bangkok Post.
Her initiative has raised awareness and advocated support for breast cancer patients over the past three years, with plans to expand the project internationally through the Miss World platform.
Suchata hails from the southern island province of Phuket, where her family runs a business.
She studies international relations at Thammasat University and is fluent in Chinese, English, and Thai.
Ethiopia's Hasset Dereje was named first runner-up, followed by Poland's Maja Klajda and Martinique's Aurélie Joachim.
"Opal has shown us that she is more than a winner — she is a woman of purpose, with a voice the world is ready to hear," said Miss World Organisation chairman Julia Morley, who led the jury.

Japanese pop star guilty of assaulting interpreter

Kamimura, a former member of a Japanese boy group named ONE N' ONLY, was arrested in the southern Chinese city in March. In the same month, his contract was terminated due to a serious compliance violation. In April, he pleaded not guilty. He allegedly touched the interpreter's thigh repeatedly during a celebratory dinner at a restaurant. During the trial last month, the interpreter testified through a live video link that Kamimura had invited her to a bathroom elsewhere. After she dismissed the request and told him she had a boyfriend, Kamimura continued to touch her thigh, she said. The defence argued the interpreter exaggerated her claims and the alleged bathroom invitation might not have been based on improper motives. Judge Peter Yu handed down the conviction yesterday, saying Kamimura touched the interpreter in a caressing nature that implicitly carried a sexual undertone and had indecent intent. 'The defendant's acts are obviously disrespectful toward women,' Yu said. 'Such behaviour should be condemned.' In pleading for a lesser penalty, the defence said Kamimura previously had a promising future and paid a heavy price. After the verdict was announced, a few of Kamimura's fans wept in the courtroom. But Kamimura looked relieved and hugged his courtroom translator when the judge issued a fine of HK$15,000 (RM8,000) and no prison term. Chan jokes singing puts him above rival Hung
ACTOR Jackie Chan (pic) playfully threw shade at his former martial arts classmate and rival Sammo Hung, claiming that he was more talented than the latter, reported China Press. Speaking at the Locarno Film Festival recently, the 71-year-old Hong Kong superstar claimed that he had no other peer in the filmmaking industry apart from Hung when it came to writing, directing, acting and coordinating stunts. 'However I am more talented because I can sing,' Chan quipped. Chan, who was presented with a lifetime achievement award at the festival, said his master had once asked him if he was planning to continue doing stunts when he was 60. 'I'm 71 years old now but I can still fight,' Chan said, adding that he would not have been able to continue doing this without the support from fans and the industry.
