Fans rave over 'best antagonist in cinema history' in Avatar 3 trailer

Metro4 days ago
The trailer for James Cameron's highly anticipated threequel Avatar: Fire and Ash has finally dropped online – and there are already huge fans of one new character in particular.
Avatar 3 isn't scheduled to arrive in cinemas until December, but the filmmaker has created some early buzz for the next instalment in his epic big-budget sci-fi franchise.
Shot back-to-back with 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water, Fire and Ash sees the return of a sprawling cast including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Stephen Lang, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass and Britain Dalton, plus new additions Oona Chaplin, Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis.
And it's Chaplin's Varang, the fiery and aggressive leader of the newly-introduced new Mangkwan clan (Ash People), who has excited a lot of fans after her scene-stealing appearance in the trailer.
She's an intimidating figure in glimpses throughout, before her triumphant/terrifying moment at the end where she is seen warning Weaver's Kiri in menacing tones: 'Your goddess has no dominion here.'
'She's going to be one of the best antagonists of [sic] cinema history,' claimed one fan account after her fierce appearance in the trailer.
'She's gonna be such a sick villain,' added @NeekStreak, while @owenpratt93 observed: 'Varang already looks and feels like the best character of #AvatarFireAndAsh. The idea of a Na'vi who rejected Eywa is incredibly interesting, and this character oozes charisma even from just a few shots.'
Another fan acknowledged they were 'losing their mind over Varang' while @MoFandoms commented: 'The way she said 'your goddess has no dominion here', I peed a little.'
It comes after Cameron revealed the upcoming film's name and hinted at the antagonist at the D23 Disney fan event in California, which he appeared at last year August alongside Saldaña and Worthington.
'We're going into really challenging territory for all the characters that you know and love, and there are new characters – there's one especially, we think you're going to love, or maybe I should say love to hate!' he told the 12,000-stong audience, including Metro.
He also promised that fans would get to see 'a lot more of Pandora that you never saw before' with new cultures, settings, creatures and biomes.
'Here's what I can tell you – the new film is not what you expect, but it's definitely what you want,' he concluded.
Game of Thrones actress Chaplin, 39, is also the granddaughter of screen legend and comic Charlie Chaplin.
She has also given a bit more insight into the 'unresolved trauma' of Varang and the Mangkwan after they were hit by a natural disaster, which caused her to shirk Pandora's spiritual entity, Eywa.
'She basically goes towards a different power, and tries to harness that, and in so doing kind of raises her people out of misery,' Chaplin explained to Empire magazine.
'It's easy to fall into the villain mentality, but actually she's the hero of her people because she's saved them out of misery and starvation and begging.'
Avatar: Fire And Ash sees Jake (Worthington) and Neytiri's (Saldaña) family grappling with grief in the wake of the death of son Neteyam (Jamie Flatters) as conflict between the RDA and the Pandorans escalates after the Na'vi and Metikayina clan's hard-won victory at the end of Avatar: The Way of Water.
The Mangkwan promise to bring more conflict too; Cameron first teased them in January 2023, saying that he was featuring 'different cultures from those I have already shown' and that he plans 'to show the Na'vi from another angle because, so far, I have only shown their good sides'.
'In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na'vi examples. In Avatar 3 we will do the opposite. We will also explore new worlds, while continuing the story of the main characters,' he explained to French publication 20 Minutes, via Total Film.
'I can say that the last parts will be the best. The others were an introduction, a way to set the table before serving the meal.'
Had a sneak peek at the AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH trailer last night (in 3D) – and James Cameron has me convinced all over again. Phenomenal. Tremendous visuals, new antagonist Varang may become my next obsession. I have seen the trailer for #AVATAR Fire and Ash, and it is as stunning as anyone is anticipating. James Cameron once again looks to be unleashing a powerful story that will resonate, and the visuals are (somehow) on another level. There is no doubt in my mind that this WILL be… pic.twitter.com/Gp2zR2U5ky — Austin Burke (@theBurk3nator) July 21, 2025
I just EXPERIENCED the #AvatarFireAndAsh trailer in glorious 3D. I'm breathless. Visuals expectedly surreal but man is the Ash People's landscape something to behold. Pandora Civil War loading. What a privilege it is to be alive during this revolutionary franchise. @screenrant pic.twitter.com/4Xyfa5vJ5E — Liam (@LiamTCrowley) July 21, 2025
Journalists and tastemakers were previously lavishing the first proper look at Avatar: Fire and Ash with praise, after Disney secretly screened the trailer for them days ahead of its online release.
'As stunning as anyone is anticipating,' tweeted film critic Austin Burke, who also noted that 'the visuals are (somehow) on another level'.
'There is no doubt in my mind that this WILL be the biggest movie of 2025, and epic doesn't feel like it does this trailer justice…'
Meanwhile, @TheOscarRace simply announced, 'It's going to be the best film of the year', while ScreenRant's @LiamTCrowley admitted he was 'breathless'.
'What a privilege it is to be alive during this revolutionary franchise,' he added.
'Nobody is touching Cameron visually. The next Avatar looks amazing,' posted Kit Stone.
Others had exciting comparisons for the film on the strength of the first trailer alone.
'It's insane we're getting Last of the Mohicans meets like Empire Strikes Back!' suggested @MOVIEDEATHS. 'Giant action set pieces somehow the visuals look even better than Way of Water [sic].' More Trending
Thanks to the success of Avatar: The Way of Water, which is currently the third highest grossing film ever behind the first Avatar – having made over $2.3million at the box office – we will also get Avatar 4 and 5.
But not until December 2029 and December 2031, respectively.
Avatar: Fire and Ash releases in cinemas on December 19, 2025.

Nicolas Cage, 61, makes the rare move of wearing bright colors with PINK slides as he heads to a birthday party

Nicolas Cage was spotted getting into the party spirit as he went shopping balloons in Malibu on Friday. Kicking off the weekend, the 61-year-old actor was spotted in an eye-catching, colorful Versace outfit as he prepared to celebrate a special occasion with his family. During his outing, he had his hands full with Disney-themed decorations for a themed party. The Longlegs star — who enjoyed a rare outing with his wife Riko Shibata, 30, in mid-July after admitting Sarah Jessica Parker broke his heart in the past — shares his youngest child, his only daughter August Francesca Coppola Cage with his wife. He is also father to two adult children from separate, past relationships. He shares son Weston Coppola Cage, 34, with his ex-girlfriend Christina Fulton and son Kal-El Coppola Cage, 19, with his third wife Alice Kim. For the festivities, he wore an unusually colorful and patterned look paired with oversize sunglasses and coral pink sandals. The Oscar-winning actor accessorized with a flashy, gold watch as he seemed to be rushing home for a family gathering. His first wife was Patricia Arquette. They tied the knot in 1995 before separating nine months later and finalizing their divorce in 2001. He went on to marry Lisa Marie Presley from 2002 until 2004. After their separation, he married Alice Kim from 2004 and was with her until 2016. He later married Erika Koike in 2019, however, that was annulled four days later. He tied the knot with his fifth and current wife Riko Shibata in February 2021 in a private Las Vegas ceremony after they met during his trip to Japan. They exchanged rings with an intimate gathering with Cage's ex-wife Alice Kim in attendance. Cage and Kim, with whom he shares his son Kal-El, have remained good friends since their divorce a decade ago. Earlier this year, he and his wife, the mother of his youngest child, attended the Golden Globes and walked the red carpet together in January. They previously met through friends and he proposed to the Kyoto native, who is four years younger than his first son Weston, on Facetime when she was in Japan and he was in Las Vegas. 'It's true, and we are very happy,' he told in a statement about their marriage at the time. A state of Nevada marriage certificate obtained by showed Riko has taken Cage's name. Official documents showed that Cage and Riko applied for their wedding license on January 10 — the day of Riko's 26th birthday — and that it is her first marriage. Cage announced their engagement in an interview with his brother Marc Coppola's radio show in August of 2021. He said at the time: 'She left New York and went back to Kyoto, Japan, and I went back to Nevada and I haven't seen her for 6 months. 'We're really happy together and we're really excited to spend that time together so I finally just said "Look, I wanna marry you," and we got engaged on FaceTime,' he recalled. He also explained how he picked out a special black diamond engagement ring for his bride and shipped it to her in Japan as they were apart at the time. 'Her favorite color is black, so she wanted the black gold and the black diamond.'

'The buck stops with the studio!' Harvey Weinstein accusers argue amongst themselves after one victim of pervert Hollywood mogul wins $5.7 million payout whilst dozens of other women had to split $17 million in damages between them

Harvey Weinstein 's victims have spoken of their fury after another of his accusers got a $5.7 million payout, by far the largest for anyone. Zoe Brock said she was happy for British actress Julia Ormond but the deal 'pisses me off' because she was one of dozens of women who had to split $17 million in 2021. Ms Brock said that others may take aim at Disney, who Ms Ormond sued, because 'the buck stops' with the studio as it owned Weinstein's movie company Miramax until 2010. Kaja Sokola, who testified at Weinstein's retrial in New York earlier this year, warned the settlement could be a 'blueprint' for others to follow. This week exclusively revealed the stunning payout to Ms Ormond, 60, who rose to fame starring opposite Brad Pitt in Legends of the Fall. The out of court settlement came after she sued Miramax, Disney and her former agents Creative Artists Agency (CAA) claiming negligence for not protecting her from Weinstein even though they knew he could be dangerous. Ms Ormond claimed that Weinstein stripped naked in front of her at her Manhattan apartment in 1995 and forced her to perform oral sex on him. The settlement from Disney and Miramax does not include any admission of wrongdoing but it could open the door to dozens of similar cases. Ms Ormond (pictured) claimed that Weinstein stripped naked in front of her at her Manhattan apartment in 1995 and forced her to perform oral sex on him And it is a striking contrast to the $17 million settlement from 2021 for more than 40 women with Weinstein's bankrupt film company, The Weinstein Co. Speaking from her home in New Zealand, Ms Brock praised Ms Ormond as a 'queen' for getting such a deal for herself. Ms Brock, 51, a former model, has claimed that Weinstein took off his clothes and demanded a massage in a hotel room when she was 23, forcing her to hide in the bathroom. She said that Ms Ormond has 'done what I wanted to do'. Ms Brock said: 'My whole idea I went to the lawyers with was to go after Disney 'Everything was covered up, everything was'. Ms Brock said that the class action lawsuit, which led to the 2021 settlement, was the thing that 'undid us'. She said: 'The class action lawsuit was the worst thing that any of the Weinstein survivors could have gotten involved in. We were conned into it. It bit us on the a**. 'I was the last person who tried to hold out and not take that settlement and appeal 'The problem was….that I was broke, a single mom, totally trying to get my life back together. The amount it would cost was astronomical. I couldn't afford it'. The day Ms Brock took the deal, which she said was in the 'low, low six figures', she 'puked and cried'. She said: 'It was awful. I put that small amount in a trust for my kid and tried to move on. It pisses me off. 'I am so happy for Julia. Smart girl. Clever girl. What a woman. Go for it. F*** them where it hurts'. Ms Brock said that others may follow suit because 'Miramax was part of Disney, it was a clear step. Miramax did not exist without Disney. 'The buck stops at Disney'. Ms Sokola, 45, a former model, testified at Weinstein's retrial about two instances of sexual assault, one in 2002 when she was just 16 and a second one in 2006. Weinstein was convicted of first-degree criminal sexual act and third-degree rape in 2020 and sentenced to 23 years in prison, but the conviction was overturned on appeal in April 2024 and Weinstein is now being retried on the charges The jury acquitted Weinstein on the counts related to her testimony, however they found him guilty of sexual assault related to another accuser. A mistrial was declared over a rape allegation. Ms Sokola said she was 'really happy' for Ms Ormond. She said: 'What they did, especially the companies, the settlement she received should be a blueprint for all other races that involved other big companies that should be responsible for the people that work for them'. 'Do I think it's fair for the other women? Of course I don't. I wish all the other women got money to at least conceive they couldn't work. 'At the same time if I could give advice to anyone thinking about proceeding in that step, just reach out to the best lawyer you can'. Ms Sokola said that during early discussions with Weinstein's companies figures in excess of $100 million were touted for his victims, which are thought to run into the hundreds. Instead some women ended up with tens of thousands of dollars. Ms Sokola saidL 'I would say if someone feels they have a unique individual case, I'd suggest they go for it. 'This is such a gamble. You never know what will be the outcome'. Ms Brock's lawyer was Doug Wigdor, dubbed the 'no.1 MeToo lawyer in America': his other clients include Cassandra Ventura, who testified earlier this year at the trial of Sean 'Diddy' Combs. During the case it emerged that Ms Ventura had gotten a $20 million payout from Combs after suing him in 2023. She is also set to get another $10 million from a Los Angeles hotel where he subjected her to a brutal beating. Mr Wigdor has another client, former model Sara Ziff, who has also sued Disney for its failure to protect her from Weinstein: her case is ongoing. One hitch for potential litigants is that Ms Ormond's case was filed under the Adult Survivors Act, a 2022 law in New York that allowed a one year window to file civil cases that were normally past the statute of limitations. However other laws may provide a way for cases to be filed and similar legislation could be passed in the future again. Meredith Firetog, a partner at Mr Wigdor's law firm who worked on Ms Ormond's case, said that they were 'happy' with the settlement. She said: 'Harvey Weinstein didn't operate in a vacuum and it's important to hold those people and institutions accountable'. Elizabeth Fagan, the lawyer who brokered the 2021 settlement for Weinstein's victims, did not respond to requests for comment.

Disney World begins demolition of beloved landmark

Disney World fans were left in 'tears' after shocking new photos revealed that the demolition of a beloved landmark has begun. The theme park is in the midst of transforming the Muppets Courtyard at Hollywood Studios into a brand new Monsters Inc.-themed land. Both the Muppet*Vision 3D ride and the Muppets-themed restaurant PizzeRizzo closed permanently on June 7 to make way for the brand new area, which will feature a suspended rollercoaster. Now, new images have been shared by popular theme park news outlet Blog Mickey that show a massive construction update. Disney has officially started knocking down the buildings in the area, and the snaps show the Studio 1 Company Store in Muppets Courtyard completely destroyed. The building that was once a booming gift shop selling all-things Muppets is now piles of soot and plaster as the entire store has been knocked down, with just a portion of one of the walls still standing. When Disney first announced its plans to get rid of the Muppets Courtyard it divided fans - some people were excited for the new stuff coming to Hollywood Studios, while others were heartbroken. And now, the new photos have sparked a slew of negative comments from devastated Muppets' fans. 'I cried when I saw that a few hours ago,' one user replied after the images were shared on X (formerly Twitter). 'Praying they kept some of the Muppets props but it doesn't look hopeful.' 'These pictures truly feel like an open casket or some [expletive] to me they're PAINFUL to look at,' someone else quipped. 'I thought the image they used to snapshot the source was AI generated. What the [expletive] do you mean this is the current state of MuppetVision 3D??!?!?!?' another horrified fan added. 'This hurts my heart to see… I used to work at this store and have so many wonderful memories,' read a fourth comment. A fifth said, 'Man this [expletive] is brutal to watch.' Others called it 'vile' and joked that there should have been a 'content warning' on the photos due to how upsetting they are. Some simply replied by sharing crying emojis or GIFs of people bawling. The new Monsters Inc. attraction will put riders 'right in the middle of the monster action.' The area will also have a new show featuring fan-favorite characters Mike and Sully, a 'Monsters playground,' multiple eateries - including a Japanese restaurant based on Harry Hausen's from the film - as well as two stores.
