The Quail Reunites the First Three Shelby G.T. 500s — First California Appearance Since 1967
The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering will host a historic reunion of the first three Shelby G.T. 500 cars ever built — their first appearance together in California since serving as company cars for Shelby American in 1967. Coordinated by The Shelby Research Group, the display will include the first fastback, coupe, and convertible that launched Shelby's big-block Mustang program.
This showcase of the very first 7.0-liter Shelby G.T. 500s complements the event's dedicated Shelby Mustang G.T. 350 class, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the legendary small-block model.
In 1966, fresh from Ford and Carroll Shelby's victory over Ferrari at Le Mans, Shelby American unveiled plans for the 1967 lineup — introducing the 428-8V 'Ford Cobra' big block alongside the proven 289 HiPo, adding distinctive fiberglass body components, aggressive styling, and, for the first time, convertible and coupe variants.
'Built in November 1966, these three cars were ordered identically — Candyapple Red with luxury black interiors, fully optioned with Select-Shift automatics, air-conditioning, Mag Star wheels, and AM radios — exactly what you'd expect for public-relations cars,' said Brian Styles, Shelby historian and organizer of the display. 'They became the first dual-quad big block Mustangs produced by Ford — and the first G.T. 500s serialized and completed by Shelby American.'
The fastback (#0100) was completed first, followed by the coupe (#0131) and convertible (#0139). The fastback fulfilled its role as a magazine test car, but production bottlenecks and other problems prevented further coupes and convertibles, leaving both as one-of-one builds.
The G.T. 500 Special Display Cars — as documented by The Shelby Research Group:
Fastback, s/n 67411F--0100 — First multi-carbureted Mustang built by Ford, most expedited Shelby G.T. from the San Jose plant, and the first G.T. 500 serialized/completed by Shelby American. Served as the inaugural big-block PR test car. One of the most photographed and road-tested Shelbys. Presented by Eric Johnson.
Coupe, s/n 67411H9A00131 — Only multi-carbureted Mustang coupe built by Ford and only G.T. 500 coupe completed by Shelby American. Second serialized/completed G.T. 500, only documented supercharged example, and precursor to the 1968 California Special. Driven regularly by Shelby Engineering Manager Fred Goodell, who nicknamed the car 'Little Red.' Presented by Craig Jackson.
Convertible, s/n 67413C9A00139 — Only multi-carbureted Mustang convertible built by Ford and only G.T. 500 convertible completed by Shelby American. Third serialized/completed G.T. 500, used personally by Carroll Shelby and later disguised as a 1968 model for factory advertising photography. Presented by Brian Styles.
After Shelby American's California facility closed in August 1967, company cars and assets moved to Dearborn under the new Shelby Automotive Company. The first three G.T. 500s continued to serve engineering and marketing roles through 1968 before being sold to Ford dealers in early 1969 and making their way into private hands — completing their intended purpose from regular production to retail ownership, albeit with several exceptional chapters inserted to their stories along the way.

You Can Get A Ford Mustang GTD In Fully Naked Carbon Fiber Now
The latest car news, reviews, and features. The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon just made its debut at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca as the region hosts Monterey Car Week. While previous versions of the mightiest factory Mustang showcased quite a bit of exposed carbon fiber, this special variant embraces the look of unpainted CF completely—almost everything except the glass and lights is naked carbon. Ford says the Liquid Carbon model is 13 pounds lighter than a GTD Carbon Series Performance Package (the one with big visible carbon fiber elements on the hood and roof). That's thanks to swapping sheet metal in the door for bonded carbon fiber and, of course, skipping paint. There aren't any changes to the supercharged 5.2-liter V8, so expect the same output of 815 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. I suppose an exceptionally talented pilot might be able to squeeze just a little more speed out of this model on account of the weight reduction, though. Most impressively, the carbon weave on the hood, roof, rear deck, and rear wing is all designed to match up down the middle of the car, giving aesthetic consistency to the body. All Liquid Carbon GTDs will ship with the Performance Package (magnesium wheels, active aerodynamics, unique front fascia with dive planes, and a few other bits). This version of the GTD is slated for deliveries in October. Ford has not disclosed the price, but since the GTD base is about $325,000, I would guess this one's going to be closer to $400,000. If you can't come up with that kind of money, at least you can enjoy looking at the car in this nice little album Ford put together. It really is quite a cool-looking machine. Ford Obviously, the all-carbon exterior is the star of the show here. But the Liquid Carbon GTD also gets some unique interior treatments: Black leather and Dinamica microfiber suede steering wheel, Hyper Lime stitching all over the place, and a reflective gradient down the middle of the seats. View Photos of the Ford Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon
READ THE FULL STORY Ford rolled out a new version of the Mustang GTD called the Liquid Carbon, describing it as "the ultimate expression of the Mustang GTD's high-tech, high-performance construction." Fittingly, the debut took place at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca as part of Monterey Car Week events. Scroll through for all the lightweight carbon-fiber technology. The Liquid Carbon is down 13 pounds compared to a Mustang GTD Carbon Series with the Performance package. Deleting paint is both a weight saver and a style choice. The doors swap sheetmetal for bonded carbon fiber, another weight-saving move. Inside, the microfiber seating features a reflective pattern that runs down the middle of the seats. Hyper Lime stitching is found on the seats, doors, center console, instrument panel, and steering wheel. The Liquid Carbon package can only be had as long as you also order the Performance package, which adds magnesium wheels and more aerodynamic doodads while stripping out sound deadening. The powertrain is unchanged, with the supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 engine producing 815 horsepower. Like all other Mustang GTDs, that oomph is sent to the rear wheels via a carbon-fiber driveshaft and an eight-speed dual-clutch transaxle. There's no word on price yet for the Liquid Carbon package, but considering that the Mustang GTD already starts well over $300,000, it will likely be pricey. Michigan autoworker's lost wallet found under car hood in Minnesota over a decade later
A retired Michigan autoworker's lost wallet was discovered under the hood of a car in Minnesota on it over a decade after it vanished while he was working at a Ford assembly plant. Richard Guilford's tri-fold leather wallet — filled with a driver's license, work ID, gift cards worth $275, cash, and lottery tickets — turned up under the hood of a car being repaired at a shop in Lake Crystal, Minnesota. The wallet was discovered in June by mechanic Chad Volk, sandwiched between the transmission and the air filter box of a 2015 Ford Edge with 151,000 miles on it. AP 'Did you lose your wallet years ago? If so, it was in the engine bay of a car,' Volk wrote to Guilford on Facebook. Volk messaged a photo of the wallet and included the driver's license, where Guilford saw a younger headshot of himself. Advertisement 'Crazy,' Volk said of his wallet turning up. Guilford was working on the same car in 2014 at a Ford factory in Wayne on an assembly line of new vehicles waiting to be shipped out to dealerships, when he realized his wallet had vanished. Unsure where it had disappeared — the autoworker searched dozens of cars before giving up on finding that wallet, which was a gift from his sons. 3 The wallet was discovered in June by mechanic Chad Volk, sandwiched between the transmission and the air filter box of a 2015 Ford Edge. AP Advertisement 'I can't take too much time to look for this because I gotta work. I'm on the clock,' he recalled feeling. 'No luck. Life went on.' Guilford, now 56 and living in Petersburg, Michigan, retired from Ford in 2024 after nearly 35 years. 'The amazing part to me was it was so protected,' Guilford said. 'Think about this: 11 years, rain, snow. It was in Minnesota, for crying out loud. It was in Arizona when it was bought. Think about how hot a transmission gets in Arizona driving down the road. That's incredible.' Advertisement 3 Some of the gift cards in the wallet were remarkably still valid. AP Some of the gift cards in the wallet were remarkably still valid. Cabela's, an outdoor retailer, said the $250 gift card Guilford had in his wallet is still valid. The company has since offered him more to bless his luck. 'I'm going to put everything back in it and leave it just like it is, and it's gonna sit at the house in the china cabinet, and that's for my kids,' said Guilford. 'They can tell my great-grandkids about it. We're big into stories. I like tellin' stories. That's just who I am.' With Post wires
