‘Brilliant' action thriller finally lands on Netflix 5 years after release

Sophie-May Williams Published July 8, 2025 12:15pm Link is copied Comments Calling all action film lovers, Netflix has just added a 'brilliant' thriller to the streaming platform, five years after its release. Yep, we're talking about the Liam Neeson-led Honest Thief, which was first released back in 2020, and grossed a worldwide total of $32.6 million. While it may not have made an impression as huge as the Taken trilogy, many Neeson fans have dubbed Honest Thief as 'brilliant' and a 'satisfying' watch. And, now that Netflix has acquired the movie, it's only a matter of time until a new legion of fans is found. So, what exactly happens in Honest Thief, and what have fans said about the film? (Picture: AP) Neeson stars as Tom Carter, a meticulous thief who is so good at his job (see: being a criminal) that he's referred to as the 'In-and-Out Bandit.' Over the course of his 'career,' he admits to stealing a casual $9 million from small-town banks - all while managing to keep his identity a secret. As a former US Marine and demolition expert, he uses his knowledge and skills to pull off heist after heist (Picture: AP) However, when he falls in love with the happy-go-lucky Annie, played by Kate Walsh, Tom decides that he needs to give up his illegal lifestyle for good. But, when he heads to the police station to divulge his criminal past - and hand in the stolen $9 million - he finds himself being double-crossed by two ruthless FBI agents who intend to steal the money for themselves. Oh, and they also frame him for a murder he didn't commit. What follows is a high-stakes cat-and-mouse chase across town, with Tom and Annie trying to evade the FBI, while also proving that the agents are crooks (Picture: AP) There's no time like the present, as Netflix added Honest Thief to its action thriller catalogue today. This means you can either binge it during your Monday night viewing, or wait until the weekend to have it as your Friday night, Saturday night, or Sunday afternoon watch. Or, watch it multiple times this week, there's no judgment here (Picture: AP) On Rotten Tomatoes, Honest Thief holds an impressive 87% on the Popcornmeter, where regular viewers can share their reviews. However, the Tomatometer, aka the critics' section, only boasts 41%. The former has over 1,000 ratings, many of which praise Neeson's performance and the 'above average' script. One person called the movie 'underrated,' while another said: 'Liam Neeson doing what he does best. Never disappoints' (Picture: AP) Elsewhere, a third fan typed: 'Very entertaining, well written and lots of stars doing a fantastic job. Lots of action with a little bit of humor at just the right time,' as a fourth echoed: 'While certainly nothing we haven't seen Liam Neeson do before, an above average script and solid work from his supporting cast make this version of Taken well worth a watch.' Other notable compliments include: 'A amazing movie but really, when has Liam Neeson ever disappointed us in a film? Good for all ages and just a tasteful film. The storyline is phenomenal so if you haven't watched it then stop what you are doing and go watch it.' Plus, 'What a thriller! Great movie' (Picture: AP) Unfortunately, the critics aren't as easy to please. M. N. Miller at Ready Steady Cut said: 'Honest Thief has insincere characters, a mundane plot, and is a fairly bland thriller by any standard,' while Sarah Ward at Concrete Playground shared: 'Another bland action film with little else going for it beyond its main attraction.' There were some positive reviews from critics, though. Keith Garlington from Keith & The Movies said Neeson 'delivered what his film promised – light, breezy entertainment for fans of these fun getaway thrillers,' as Jeanne Kaplan from Kaplan vs. Kaplan penned: 'HONEST THIEF isn't going to win any awards, but fans of Neeson will appreciate his efforts. I found it a rather good diversion for 99 minutes.' Honest Thief is now streaming on Netflix (Picture: AP)

'Gruesomely romantic horror movie' lands huge 90% Rotten Tomatoes score

Together, starring real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie, landed in US cinemas this week, ahead of a UK premiere on August 15. Michael Shanks' scare-fest follows lovebirds Tim and Millie who move out to the country, where they have a bizarre, supernatural encounter. However, things take a creepy turn when their flesh begins fusing to each other, bringing them much closer than they ever anticipated. Although the flick hasn't been out long, it has gone down very well with film buffs, and currently claims a near-perfect score from reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to a 79% mark from fans. Heaping praise on the film, Movie Brief's Michael Nordine raved: 'One of the more gruesomely romantic horror movies ever made.' 'A giddy grotesquerie that has midnight-movie crowd-pleaser written all over it,' Nick Schager of the Daily Beast agreed. Owen Gleiberman, for Variety, penned: 'It's fun (in a rather bumptious way), it stars two very good actors playing a couple who have as many issues as couples do in real life, and it works as a totally unhinged yet far from mindless thriller built around a Big Idea.' Deadline Hollywood Daily's Glenn Garner hailed: 'Although Alison Brie and husband Dave Franco have shared the screen in the past, they truly sink into each other with some skin-crawling, albeit heartfelt and hilarious performances in writer-director Michael Shanks' feature debut Together.' As the Guardian's Benjamin Lee added: 'A convincingly gory argument for being single.' 'Years into their relationship, Tim and Millie (Dave Franco and Alison Brie) find themselves at a crossroads as they move to the country, abandoning all that is familiar in their lives except each other,' the official synopsis reads. 'With tensions already flaring, a nightmarish encounter with a mysterious, unnatural force threatens to corrupt their lives, their love, and their flesh.' More Trending Filmmaker Michael previously opened up about the unsettling plot in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, admitting that it was inspired by his own relationship. 'I think when anyone is in a long-term relationship, there comes a point where you realize you have the same friends, eat the same food, breathe the same air – you start to wonder if you can truly tell where you end and your partner begins,' he told the outlet. 'I thought that was a really compelling place to start to examine in a relationship – what if you took that old cliche of sharing a life and took it to somewhere visceral, and horrifically literal?' Together is in US cinemas now, ahead of a UK release on August 15. Got a story? Stevie Nicks cancels tour dates just days before first gig due to injury

Stevie Nicks has been forced to postpone a series of upcoming tour dates after sustaining a shoulder fracture that requires time to heal. The 76-year-old music icon took to Instagram to share the news directly with fans, confirming that concerts scheduled for August and September will be rescheduled. 'Due to a recent injury resulting in a fractured shoulder that will require recovery time, Stevie Nicks' scheduled concerts in August and September will be rescheduled,' she wrote. 'Please note that October dates will be unaffected.' The Fleetwood Mac legend added that the tour is expected to resume on Wednesday, October 1 in Portland, Oregon. 'Stevie looks forward to seeing everyone soon and apologizes to the fans for this inconvenience,' the message concluded. Fans who have already purchased tickets are advised to retain them, as they will be valid for the rescheduled shows. Specific details about new dates and venues will be made available at the original point of purchase. Nicks had initially announced a nine-date tour across the US and Canada back in April, with performances slated for August and October. Due to overwhelming demand, additional shows were later added, including a launch night at Brooklyn's Barclays Center on August 8, as well as stops in Hollywood, Florida and Detroit in September. October was set to bring her to cities including Portland, Sacramento, Atlantic City, Charlotte, and Hartford. The news comes after Nicks postponed her Glasgow gig at short notice after having minor surgery for a leg injury. The Dreams singer was due to appear at the OVO Hydro earlier this month but organisers said she needs a 'few days of recovery' following a medical procedure. Even more recently, Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham officially confirmed the re-release of their 1973 duo album Buckingham Nicks. The famously acrimonious former bandmates caused fans to 'crash out' with a matching pair of social media posts in June, and then the appearance of a mysterious billboard a few days later. More Trending Many took to social media to speculate that the pair might finally be on speaking terms again after famously feuding for decades. Then, they informed the world that a re-release of Buckingham Nicks – which they recorded before joining Fleetwood Mac – will be available September 19. For now, fans will need to wait just a little longer to see the mystical frontwoman return to the stage. The silver lining? Nicks plans to be back on the road this autumn. Got a story?
