Putra Heights gas pipeline blast: Excavator not to blame, local council followed SOPs, says Selangor MB

Malay Mail08-07-2025
SHAH ALAM, July 8 — The explosion of a gas pipeline in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya on April 1 was not caused by an excavator carrying out digging works that led to the massive fire, the Selangor State Legislative Assembly was told today.
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said investigations by the police, the Department of Minerals and Geoscience (JMG), and the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) confirmed that the above-ground work did not impact the gas pipeline, according to a report by national news agency Bernama.
He explained that the monsoon drainage pipe located above the gas pipeline remained unaffected.
'Based on my checks with the local authority, the residential area and monsoon drain construction, with a diameter of 4.2 metres, was carried out around 2008 and 2009 — before the establishment of the One-Stop Centre (OSC) in 2010,' he said during a briefing on the Putra Heights incident in the Selangor state assembly.
Amirudin also refuted claims that a property developer was carrying out unauthorised construction of shop lots near a Petronas Gas Berhad (PGB) easement.
He said the company had in fact received approval to carry out the works on March 20, 2025.
'PGB also required the developer to comply with safety conditions outlined by Petronas during a pre-work meeting before the work permit was issued,' he added.
Amirudin dismissed allegations that the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) failed to meet proper criteria when granting planning permissions involving areas under Petronas' supervision or that it compromised buffer zone requirements.
He noted that while PGB mandates a 60-foot buffer zone, the designated buffer in the Putra Heights area was 66 feet —exceeding the minimum by six feet.
Previously, DOSH's Petroleum Safety Division director, Husdin Che Amat stated that weak soil conditions beneath the pipeline — which failed to adequately support its structure — were the actual cause of the incident.
He said investigations found that while the gas pipeline met all technical specifications, the underside of the pipe was unsupported due to soft, damp soil, leading to a vulnerable unsupported segment.

High Court orders rapper Caprice to archive 31 defamatory Instagram posts on entrepreneur

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 — The High Court here today ordered rapper Caprice to archive 31 allegedly defamatory posts against entrepreneur Muhammad Asyraf Khalid that were uploaded to his Instagram. Lawyer Abdul Hakeem Aiman, who represented Muhammad Asyraf, said Judge Datuk Anand Ponnudurai made the decision after allowing an application for an ex-parte ad-interim injunction in a suit filed by the stepson of Biduanita Negara, Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin against Caprice, whose real name is Ariz Ramli, 39. 'All publications issued by the defendant (Caprice) relating to or referring to the plaintiff (Asyraf) must be archived starting today until the disposal of the inter-parte injunction application which will be heard on Sept 2,' the lawyer told the media after the ex-parte injunction hearing proceedings which took place in chambers. Meanwhile, Abdul Hakeem said that so far the defendant has not filed a statement of defence to respond to the suit. Muhammad Asyraf, 33, filed the suit on August 4, claiming that Caprice had published 31 allegedly defamatory posts against the plaintiff on his Instagram from July 30 to August 2. The plaintiff claimed that the defamatory posts, among other things, meant that the plaintiff was a disgrace for inviting Murad Zaidi, who was his personal trainer, on an Audio Siar (Podcast), simply to give the man a chance to defend himself via social media, while ignoring the injuries suffered by the victim due to the man's actions. 'I invited Murad so that he could share his experience running a gym and the challenges he faced, as well as provide an explanation for Murad's statement via Instagram which denied all the allegations against him and his family,' said Muhammad Asyraf in the suit. Muhammad Asyraf said the posting also meant that the plaintiff was the son of Datuk Seri Khalid Mohammad Jiwa or Dato K who is the husband of Siti Nurhaliza and in that capacity the plaintiff had abused money, power, influence and family ties to supposedly trap the defendant. According to him, although he had decided not to broadcast the full episode of Murad Zaidi as Caprice wanted, Caprice still continued to attack him. He said Caprice's reckless and irresponsible actions had caused the plaintiff to be insulted and hated by the public in addition to dragging Muhammad Asyraf's father into the dispute and giving an untrue and shameful image. In this regard, he sought an injunction to prevent Caprice, its employees, representatives or agents from publishing, distributing, spreading or repeating defamatory postings whether oral or written against him on any social media platform and to delete the postings on any social media platform within 24 hours from the date of judgment. The plaintiff also requested the defendant to make a public apology via video and publish it on all of the defendant's social media accounts, in addition to claiming general damages, aggravated damages, costs and other relief deemed appropriate by the court. — Bernama

With ‘takzir' law in effect, Muslim men in Terengganu face up to two years in jail for missing Friday prayer even once

KUALA TERENGGANU, Aug 18 — Muslim men in Terengganu who miss Friday prayers without valid reasons risk a fine of up to RM3,000, a two-year jail term, or both, after the Shariah Criminal Offences (Takzir) Enactment 2016 now comes into effect. State Information, Preaching and Shariah Empowerment exco Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi said while previously, only those who failed to attend three consecutive Friday prayers could be penalised, now missing it even once will be punishable. 'This reminder is important because Friday prayers are not only a religious symbol but also an expression of obedience among Muslims. 'Therefore, punishment will only be imposed as a last resort if reminders are ignored by those who neglect this obligation,' he was quoted saying by Berita Harian. He said banners would be displayed at mosque compounds to remind worshippers of the obligation to perform Friday prayers. The campaign is also intended to raise public awareness of the law already in force in Terengganu. He urged Muslims to accept the implementation of the law as an effort to educate and preserve the dignity of Islam, particularly among the younger generation. 'Enforcement action can be taken through public reports or via patrols and joint operations by Terengganu Islamic Affairs Department (JHEAT) officers together with local authorities (PBT). 'This section has existed since the law was first enacted in 2001, and was then amended in 2016,' he said. The Enactment was passed in 2016, and also included amendments on sections handling Shariah offences such as failure to respect Ramadan and harassing women in public places. Previously, the Shariah offence of missing Friday prayers were punishable by a maximum of six months imprisonment, or a fine not exceeding RM1,000.

Anwar urges good governance, strong oversight in AI to avoid past ‘piratisation' mistakes

CYBERJAYA, Aug 18 — Principles of good governance and proper oversight must be firmly embedded in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure Malaysia's digital transformation progresses effectively, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today. Anwar, who is also finance minister, said that while AI and emerging technologies present vast opportunities, they must be approached carefully to avoid outcomes that could harm the country. He also drew a comparison with the country's past privatisation efforts, noting how a lack of transparency and poor governance turned some initiatives into costly failures. 'At that time, it wasn't really 'privatisation' but more like 'piratisation' that bypassed proper processes. 'And what was the result? Many companies that were initially awarded projects with the hope of benefiting the country and the people ended up incurring major losses, which became significant national debts that the people had to bear. 'This is why, in all aspects of computerisation, digital transformation and AI development, the principle of good governance is essential,' he said at the Temu Anwar@Universiti Multimedia (MMU) programme and the launch of MMU Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Engineering (FAIE) here today. — Bernama
