FM flags tax appeals backlog, tells CBDT to fast-track resolution
Finance Minister (FM) Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday directed the Income Tax department to accelerate the disposal of over 5,70,000 pending tax appeals and enhance taxpayer service delivery.
Chairing a conclave of Principal Chief Commissioners of Income Tax (PrCCsIT), the FM emphasised the need to reduce litigation and improve trust in the tax administration system, according to an official statement.
The Finance Minister called for time-bound disposal of disputed tax demands pending before faceless appellate authorities and instructed that all departmental appeals falling below the revised monetary thresholds be withdrawn within three months.
According to the Union Budget 2024-25 announcements, the monetary limits for departmental appeals were increased from ₹50 lakh to ₹60 lakh for the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), from ₹1 crore to ₹2 crore for High Courts, and from ₹2 crore to ₹5 crore for the Supreme Court.
Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) officials informed that following this change, 4,605 cases were withdrawn in 2024, and another 3,120 were not filed due to the enhanced thresholds. In FY 2025-26, the department aims to dispose of more than 2,25,000 appeals, involving tax demands exceeding ₹10 trillion.
On the taxpayer services front, the Finance Minister reviewed the status of grievance redressal and refund issuance. According to the release, 1,31,844 grievances out of 1,60,229 received through CPGRAMS and e-Nivaran platforms were resolved as of June 17, reflecting a disposal rate of 82.28 per cent.
Refunds worth ₹23,376 crore were issued based on Orders Giving Effect, and ₹10,496 crore through rectification in FY 2025-26 so far. This marks a 58.04 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, said the release.

New Delhi [India], 24 June (ANI): Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday lauded the resilience of Indian exporters, highlighting that the country's export growth of 6.3 per cent has significantly outpaced the global average of 4 per cent despite an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape. Speaking at the India Exim Bank Trade Conclave, Sitharaman emphasised that Indian exporters have demonstrated remarkable adaptability and innovation in navigating multiple global crises that have disrupted international trade flows. 'Despite the complex geopolitical situation, Indian exporters are doing well,' the Finance Minister said, noting that India's export performance has been particularly impressive given the challenging global Finance Minister acknowledged that global challenges have only intensified in recent years, with external pressures mounting on international trade. She pointed to a series of geopolitical conflicts that have severely disrupted global commerce, including the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Gaza conflict. 'In the last few years, global growth and trade have all suffered. There was the Russia-Ukraine war, then it was Israel-Gaza. Every year we've had one or the other serious challenge to do with trade,' Sitharaman observed. These successive crises have created an environment where 'the world seems not favourable for export,' making India's export performance all the more these headwinds, Sitharaman identified three standout qualities that have enabled Indian exporters to thrive in difficult circumstances. First, she noted that Indian exports are 'growing and growing significantly,' demonstrating consistent expansion even as global trade faces headwinds. Second, Indian exporters have evolved beyond traditional commodity exports, increasingly focusing on 'technology-infused high-end products' across diverse sectors, including pharmaceuticals, IT-related services, and automobiles. 'India is not just about exporting raw foods or commodities. It is exporting today well-engineered products which meet high standards,' the Finance Minister emphasised. The third quality involves the strategic diversification of export destinations, with Indian companies actively seeking new markets and opportunities rather than relying on traditional trading Finance Minister's remarks underscore a significant transformation in India's export profile, moving away from low-value commodities toward sophisticated, technology-driven products. This shift has positioned Indian exporters to compete more effectively in global markets and command better prices for their products. The emphasis on pharmaceuticals, IT services, and automotive exports reflects India's growing capabilities in high-skill, high-value manufacturing and services sectors. Recognising the challenges posed by the unfavourable global export environment, Sitharaman stressed the importance of supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) entering the export sector. 'Outside, we find the challenges are there, and therefore every encouragement given for those small and medium units which are coming up in the export area will be of immense benefit,' she said. Going further, the Finance Minister added that in the FY 2024-25, India's total exports reached an all-time high of USD 825 billion, achieving 6 per cent growth over the previous year, and a significant leap from USD 466 billion in 2013-14. FTAs with US, EU soon; exporters to get full govt backing: Sitharaman
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday said that trade pacts with the United States and the European Union are likely to be concluded soon. She assured exporters of every possible government support amid the challenging global environment. 'Intense trade negotiations are going on with the US and the European Union and should come to a conclusion sooner. Emphasis is being made on getting more free trade agreements signed,' Sitharaman said at Exim Bank's Trade Conclave 2025 in New Delhi. The finance minister pointed out that India's total exports have touched an all-time high of $825 billion—a 6 per cent growth over the previous year—despite a challenging global environment. 'This is a significant leap of $466 billion over 2013–14,' she added. She lauded the grit and perseverance of Indian exporters, acknowledging their continued success despite global headwinds. 'Despite that, I appreciate the Indian exporters putting in that kind of an effort, that they are still growing and are finding real success. And therefore, on this particular occasion, I take this opportunity to congratulate all those exporters who have received their awards. But for those who have not received their awards, you're really swimming against the current and succeeding in it.' She further assured exporters of continued government backing: 'So all support from the Government of India is all that I can assure you, because we need to do that more.' Sitharaman further highlighted that global trade was slipping, with institutions such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the World Bank projecting a decline. 'Global growth in trade has suffered,' she said, adding that Indian exporters were 'swimming against the current' despite the odds. Her comments come at a time when India is looking to deepen its export base while navigating an uncertain global economic climate brought about by US President Donald Trump's tariffs and broader geopolitical uncertainties. Sitharaman reiterated the government's commitment to supporting exporters through improved access to finance and structural reforms. 'The government will give all support to exporters. Every year we have had serious challenges in global trade,' she said. She pointed out that despite one challenge or another each year, Indian exporters have continued to perform well. 'From COVID in 2020 to the Russia–Ukraine war in 2022, and disturbances due to Hamas in 2023, and the recent tariff war—we have had serious challenges every year to global trade,' she said, highlighting that Indian exporters have upped their game by foraying into new markets and exporting high-tech, value-added products. 'While global exports grew at 4 per cent, India's exporters managed a 6.3 per cent growth,' she added. 'Tech-infused high-end products are getting exported today. India is not just exporting bulk raw goods or commodities. Today, high-standard, well-engineered products are being exported. Indian exporters have also been finding new markets,' she said. Sitharaman noted that the government has taken five major steps to support exporters. 'The first one is transport and logistics upgrades, which improve supply chain efficiency. Secondly, the government has provided targeted support to MSMEs. Third of the five is trade finance access,' she said.

Sincere efforts afoot to address public grievances: Minister in-charge of Mandya district N. Cheluvarayaswamy
Minister in-charge of Mandya district N. Cheluvarayaswamy on Tuesday said that the district administration is making sincere efforts to resolve various public grievances in accordance with legal procedures. 'The State government's five guarantee schemes are being implemented in a non-partisan manner, without any discrimination based on caste or community. Benefits are being extended to all eligible citizens,' he said after inaugurating the Janaspandana (public interaction) programme held at K.R. Pet. Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy further said that public representatives have initiated several development works. He noted that the Mysugar factory is being revitalised, and a new agricultural university is also being set up in Mandya to boost the farming sector. 'More than 20,000 revenue-related cases have been resolved in the past two years. The State government is also working on simplifying rules related to e-Khata, e-Swathu, and B-Swathu to make services more accessible to the public,' the Minister added.
