150 More Dialysis Machines At Six Delhi Govt Hospitals
Burari Hospital received the largest share with 55 machines, officials said.
The expansion is part of the city's ongoing efforts to strengthen free dialysis facilities for patients with end-stage kidney conditions. In Jan, 150 machines were operationalised across 10 hospitals—90 under Prime Minister National Dialysis Programme (PMNDP) and 60 via the PPP model.
Delhi now has 300 dialysis machines in 16 govt hospitals, aimed at improving access, cutting waiting times and supporting underprivileged patients.
"Free dialysis is a critical lifeline. By expanding capacity, we aim to reduce delays and ensure equitable kidney care," said a senior health official.

Dr Himanshu Verma, head of nephrology at Safdarjung Hospital, said dialysis was necessary for people with kidney failure when the organs could no longer filter waste and excess fluids. Most cases are linked to diabetes, hypertension and other chronic conditions.

Although there's no official dialysis registry for Delhi, estimates based on national data suggest 2,400-2,600 people in the city currently undergo dialysis. Local studies indicate a much broader kidney disease burden: over 4% of Delhiites have impaired kidney function and nearly 6% show signs of kidney damage, pointing to a hidden but significant crisis.
Officials said the govt aimed to continue scaling up free dialysis services.
Free dialysis in Delhi govt hospitals is available to residents with at least three years of Delhi residence proof, a National Food Security Card and a family income below Rs 3 lakh per year. Those earning under Rs 1 lakh annually are eligible for treatment at select hospitals without any residency proof under PMNDP. The scheme aims to support economically weaker patients with access to life-saving kidney care.
Eligibility determines the hospitals where a patient can avail of the dialysis service under various govt-supported schemes.
Dr Anurag Gupta, director of the dialysis unit at Sir Gangaram Hospital, said the demand for dialysis continued to outpace infrastructure. "Even with 1,350 PMNDP centres nationwide serving 1.7 million patients, private and PPP models still provide the bulk of Delhi's dialysis care," he said. "The burden of chronic kidney disease is only growing. Strengthening public infrastructure is essential to ensure no patient is denied treatment due to cost," he added.

108 ambulance drivers call off stir after two days post govt intervention
Ranchi: The 108 ambulance services resumed operations on Wednesday evening following the intervention of the state health department to end the impasse which was on since Monday. The Jharkhand Pradesh Ambulance Karmachari Sangh (JPAKS) agreed to end their indefinite stir after reaching an agreement with the state govt during a meeting. All ambulance staff returned to duty, restoring emergency medical response services across the state and bringing relief to patients. The breakthrough came during a meeting chaired by additional chief secretary (ACS) of the health, medical education and family welfare department, Ajoy Kumar Singh. The discussion was attended by senior health officials, including Shashi Prakash Jha, MD of Jharkhand State Health Society, Abu Imran, MD of Jharkhand Medical and Health Infrastructure Development Corporation, Praveen Prakash, joint commissioner from the transport department, and Pankaj Kumar Sinha, state nodal officer for 108 and 104 services. He also instructed that EPF benefits be provided starting August, with consent letters obtained from staff earning over Rs 15,000. From September, salaries will be disbursed with EPF deductions. Drivers and EMTs have been asked to upload their driving licences and professional certificates respectively to the designated WhatsApp group for verification. The state has emphasised that strict disciplinary action will be taken in case of future violations of work conduct. While the resolution has brought temporary relief, the disruption already caused significant hardship to residents across various districts in Ranchi. Several residents reported being forced to arrange expensive private ambulances during emergencies. Praveen Mandal, a resident of Lalpur, said, "My father fell down from the stairs at his office and suffered a bone fracture. I immediately called for a 108 ambulance, but there was no response. In that moment of urgency, we had no choice but to hire a private vehicle and ended up paying Rs 1,200. It's heartbreaking that emergency services failed us when we needed them the most." According to striking workers, a written notice regarding the protest was submitted to the health department 14 days in advance, but no concrete steps were taken. State govt does U-turn on 10% EWS quota in pvt medical colleges
Mumbai: The state govt on Wednesday withdrew the 10% reservation it had introduced for economically weaker sections (EWS) in private medical colleges without increasing seats. The decision comes exactly a week after it was introduced. The quota appeared almost overnight in the folds of a brochure released just before the medical admission process kicked off. It was the first time such a move was made in private institutions, and it sent ripples among aspirants, their parents and colleges. A govt resolution released Wednesday clarified: "10% of the available seats will be reserved for EWS candidates. For MBBS/BDS/BAMS/BHMS and BUMS courses, this reservation will apply only if the central govt or respective councils increase existing seats. For all other courses, the reservation will apply to available seats." Other states would do well to take note." Until late Tuesday evening, parents shared legal precedents with govt officials, drawing from the events of 2019. Back then, when the EWS quota was first proposed for govt medical colleges, it met with resistance— until courts ruled that such a move must be accompanied by a proportional increase in seats. Eventually, a 25% increase in capacity paved the way for its rollout—first at the undergraduate level in June 2019, then at the postgraduate level a year later. Under current rules, EWS students receive 10% reservation in govt colleges. In private institutions, they're eligible for fee waivers—50% for boys and 100% for girls.
