UN refugee chief warns of rising migration from Libya amid funding crisis
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, has warned of a surge in migration flows from Libya and North Africa to Europe due to severe funding shortages facing the UN refugee agency (UNHCR). In comments to the Financial Times, Grandi said that Sudanese refugees are already moving from Chad into Libya — one of the key transit routes towards Europe. He stressed the urgent need to boost support for host countries to help displaced populations remain in place, which could ease growing pressures on migration corridors. Grandi noted increasing signs that thousands of Sudanese refugees are heading north toward Libya and onward to Europe, instead of staying in Sudan or neighbouring countries such as Chad. He described the current budget cuts affecting UNHCR as 'catastrophic,' warning that the lack of resources is pushing thousands of migrants toward Europe. Grandi urged European capitals to fund existing refugee reception systems in Africa rather than investing in new migration control frameworks. He added that donor-imposed budget reductions are seriously undermining the agency's ability to manage migration flows, calling the international community's neglect of the situation in African nations 'a grave strategic mistake.' India to deploy 40 commandos to protect its embassy in Libya
Indian authorities have announced plans to deploy 40 special forces commandos to protect their embassy in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, following a model previously implemented in Baghdad. General Director of India's Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) commandos said 'Personnel from the CRPF will be assigned to secure the Indian embassy in Tripoli, in a mission similar to the one previously carried out in Baghdad.' 'Around 40 personnel will take on the responsibility in Tripoli once the necessary approvals are obtained from the Ministry of External Affairs.' He added. The Indian Embassy in Libya was reopened in July of last year after nearly five years of closure due to the deteriorating security situation in the North African country. Officials familiar with the matter told the agency that 'the CRPF had previously guarded the Indian embassy in Libya for around four to five years, but it was shut down amid escalating chaos and merged with the Indian embassy in neighboring Tunisia.'
