UOS holds College of Business advisory council meeting

The meeting opened with a welcome address by His Excellency Professor Hamid Majoul Al Nuaimi, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, who on behalf of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah, expressed appreciation for the participation of eminent figures in the Advisory Council. He highlighted the invaluable expertise of the council members in advancing the college's academic programs and emphasised the importance of sustained collaboration between academia and the industry to enhance the quality of education and professional training for students.
The meeting was presided by Her Excellency Sheikha Lubna Bint Khalid Al Qasimi. At the beginning of the proceedings, His Excellency Ibrahim Salman Al Hammadi, Executive Director of Performance and Government Excellence and General Coordinator of the Sheikh Khalifa Government Excellence Program, was elected Vice Chair of the Advisory Council. In her address, Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi underscored the significant progress the UAE has made across various sectors, particularly in higher education, where technology, sustainability, and innovation have become fundamental to curriculum development. She stated that today, universities are preparing their students for the job market through comprehensive, high-quality academic programs. She expressed her honor in being part of the council and her enthusiasm for working alongside esteemed leaders and experts who have made remarkable contributions in their fields. Through collective efforts, she emphasised, a clear vision for the future of education could be shaped, further strengthening the global standing of the country's universities.
Prof. Ilhan Öztürk, Dean of the College of Business Administration, presented an overview of the college's recent academic and research achievements, highlighting the developments that have positioned it as a leading institution in business education both locally and internationally. He also emphasised the importance of fostering partnerships with academic and industry stakeholders within the UAE and beyond.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the council presented several recommendations aimed at refining the college's programs and equipping students with the skills required to meet labor market demands. Discussions emphasised the need to update curricula, strengthen collaboration with public and private sector institutions, and drive leadership in innovation and business management.

Sharjah's ruler further stressed the need to expand the industrial and service sectors through international collaboration. 'We believe that exchanging ideas and visits will help build strong cultural and economic ties that benefit our nations and lead to prosperity,' he added. In his remarks, Dr. Duck-Ho Lim, former president of HYU, commended the far-reaching contributions of the Sharjah ruler across the globe, expressing hope for continued cooperation between the two countries. Dr. Jae-Ok Park, Dean of the College of Graduate Studies, presented a detailed account of the ruler's achievements, which have helped position Sharjah as the cultural capital of the Arab world. He underlined His Highness's various publications and initiatives aimed at enriching the lives of his people. Founded in 1939, HYU is one of South Korea's most esteemed institutions, particularly known for its engineering programmes. Its alumni have made significant contributions to the country's development and technological innovations, both nationally and internationally. The honorary doctorate is one of several international recognitions bestowed upon His Highness in recognition of his leadership in education, culture, and public service.

This marks the association's first regional chapter outside the Arab world and its seventh international and regional chpater overall. The launch was celebrated at an official gathering organised by the Alumni Association in collaboration with the UAE Embassy in Madrid, attended by Ibrahim Ali Al Nuaimi, Chargé d'Affaires at the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Madrid., Dr. Salah Taher Al Haj, Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs, Dr. Amal Al Ali, Director of the Alumni Association Office, and Dr. Ahmed Al Mahdi, Director of the University's Scholarship Unit, alongside a distinguished group of graduates from various disciplines. The establishment of the chapter aims to foster enduring connections between alumni and their alma mater, empowering graduates to serve as ambassadors for the University of Sharjah at academic and professional forums worldwide. This initiative is set to further the University's vision and mission on the international stage. In his opening remarks, Ibrahim Al Nuaimi expressed his pride in this pioneering initiative, commending the university's dedication to strengthening ties with its graduates abroad. Wafaa Laalaoui, the new committee chair, who holds a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from the University in 2021 and is currently a final-year Master's researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, expressed her pride in being part of the University of Sharjah, affirming the committee's commitment to strengthening alumni connections, building an interactive network that reinforces their academic and institutional identity, and encouraging active participation in scientific and community initiatives.

The University of Sharjah has partnered with IBM on a new mobile application called My FarmWell, which is designed to promote sustainable agriculture in water-stressed regions across the MENA region. Built using IBM Environmental Intelligence and UoS Welly Chatbot, My FarmWell integrates IBM Cloud and region-specific water and climate data to provide farmers with timely, farm-level insights. From optimizing irrigation strategies to understanding local regulations, the app offers a comprehensive toolkit to support more sustainable and productive agricultural practices. With its bilingual (English and Arabic) user-friendly interface, My FarmWell equips farmers with access to well-specific data such as current water levels, historical groundwater trends, water quality indices (IWQI), and crop recommendations supporting smarter decisions in increasingly water-scarce environments. Speaking on the launch, UoS Chancellor His Excellency Prof. Essam El-Din Ajami expressed his pride in this scientific achievement, which stems from collaborative research conducted with IBM. He emphasized that, 'This milestone aligns with the university's strategic commitment to serving local and regional communities through impactful research that addresses environmental challenges'. He added that the University of Sharjah is dedicated to advancing sustainability efforts in a way that benefits not only the United Arab Emirates but also positions the university as a leading model for the entire Middle East and North Africa region.
