EVs still seen as second or third cars, says Maruti Suzuki; plans 100-city charging network to drive adoption
Maruti Suzuki eVitara (Representational)
Even though the share of electric vehicles in overall car sales has inched up in the last six months, customers are opting for them largely as second or third vehicles limiting widespread adoption in the local market, a top executive at the country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki said.
Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer, marketing and sales, Maruti Suzuki, said, 'The share of electric cars in total sales of passenger vehicles increased to 4.5% (in July) from about 2.5% last year. But the base is still small. Customers are mostly buying EVs as second or third cars, not as the first one. It is a chicken and egg situation, till the time adequate public charging network is in place, customers are unlikely to use electric cars as a primary vehicle.'
Low utilisation of public charging stations, on the other hand, make it difficult for operators to invest in further expansion. Maruti Suzuki is working on setting up a network of charging stations across top 100 cities in the country to ease customer anxiety. 'Most car companies today are driving in EVs which have range of about 500 km. What we have noticed is also, most electric car owners prefer to charge their EVs at home. However, they do want access to public charging stations as an assurance that they will not get stranded on the road in the event the battery gets depleted. Equally important for adoption is the time required for charging a vehicle at these stations, and that these are in working conditions', Banerjee said.
While Maruti Suzuki is focusing on setting up charging networks to smoother intra-city commute for customers, Korean rival Hyundai has announced plans to beef up the number of charging stations on major highways to make hassle-free inter-city travel for EV owners. Hyundai also plans to set up 600 DC fast-chargers across the country by 2032, Tarun Garg, Chief Operating Officer at HMIL told ET recently, adding that 89 of these are already operational along major highways including Delhi-Chandigarh, Mumbai-Pune and Bengaluru-Chennai.
There are about 26,000 charging stations available across the country, as per data available with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). EV sales in calendar year 2024 were 99,165, according to data collated by the Federation of Automobile Dealers' Associations. Penetration of EV 4Ws in total car sales stood at 2.4% in this period. Overall, Maruti Suzuki has planned for launch four electric vehicles by the turn of the decade, starting with the e Vitara in FY26. The company expects EV sales to increase to account for about 15% of its sales by 2030.

Auto sales in July 2025: Exports save the day as local car sales enter slow lane
Car sales in India entered the slow lane in July 2025, only to be propped up by higher exports. The demand at dealerships is muted still. WagonR hatchbacks are seen parked at the manufacturing plant of Maruti Suzuki in Manesar. India's largest carmaker continues to restrict new car dispatches to dealerships amid a slump in demand and a rise in unsold inventory.(REUTERS) Indian carmakers shipped 3,40,772 units to dealerships last month as against 3,41,510 units in the year-ago period—registering a decline of 0.2%, according to wholesale data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers on Thursday. Exports rose 8.7% year-on-year to 67,292 units during the same time. That compares with 3,98,071 cars produced last month. Essentially, at 4,08,064 units, local car sales and exports outstripped monthly production. 'All vehicle segments posted stable performance in July 2025, though overall sentiments in the passenger vehicles segment has remained subdued so far,' SIAM's Director General Rajesh Menon said in a statement. To be sure, SIAM's auto sales data isn't an indicator of demand on the ground but of how much inventory they stock at dealerships. In reality, the decline is steeper. Retail car sales—calculated as the number of vehicle registrations on the government's VAHAN portal—fell 0.81% year-on-year to 2,97,722 units in July 2025, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations. That's a yawning gap of 43,050 units between demand and supply. 'The Aashaada period and auspicious delivery days, combined with targeted schemes, new-model introductions and aggressive rural marketing, powered hinterland sales that picked up decisively towards month-end,' FADA President CS Vigneshwar said in a 7 August statement. 'Urban demand, however, remained muted due to low enquiry and restrained customer sentiment.' 'With inventory levels steady at around 55 days, calibrated discounting, streamlined finance facilitation and intensified urban outreach will be crucial for festive-season growth.'

Maruti Suzuki Escudo: Top 5 expectations from this SUV
Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to launch at least two new SUVs in the Indian passenger vehicle market in this financial year. One of them is the first-ever electric car from the automaker, the e-Vitara . Besides that, there is the Maruti Suzuki Escudo, which is slated to launch in the market on September 3. This will come as a mid-size SUV, challenging the rivals such as Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos , among others. Maruti Suzuki has tasted immense success with models like the Brezza, Grand Vitara and even the Baleno premium hatchback-based crossover Fronx. Buoyed by this and in an attempt to capitalise on the maddening SUV mania, the biggest carmaker in India is aiming to go bigger in the utility vehicle segment. The e-Vitara and the Escudo will come as part of that strategy. Here are some key facts and expectations about the Maruti Suzuki Escudo, which aims to be positioned in a segment that has been witnessing rapid growth in demand. Maruti Suzuki Escudo: To be sold through Arena Maruti Suzuki Escudo will not be a model sold through Nexa premium retail outlets. Instead, unlike the Grand Vitara, it will be sold alongside the Brezza, through the Arena retail network, which will help Maruti Suzuki to pose the new SUV as a more affordable offering and not a premium one. Maruti Suzuki Escudo: To use Grand Vitara's platform While the Escudo is unlikely to be sold through Nexa alongside the Grand Vitara, it will use the same platform as the latter. This will allow the Escudo to have a large wheelbase, eventually ensuring more cabin and boot space, which means a comfortable experience for the occupants. Maruti Suzuki Escudo: To get multiple powertrains The Maruti Suzuki Escudo will have multiple powertrain options, just like the Grand Vitara. There will be a 1.5-litre petrol engine that is capable of churning out 101 bhp peak power and 139 Nm of maximum torque. Besides that, there will be a petrol-CNG bi-fuel powertrain as well. Also, just like the Grand Vitara, the Escudo will be available with a petrol-hybrid powertrain. With this multiple-powertrain strategy, the Escudo will aim to attract a larger number of consumers with variable fuel preferences. Maruti Suzuki Escudo: To get multiple transmissions Maruti Suzuki Escudo will come with multiple transmission options. The transmission choices of the SUV will include a five-speed manual gearbox, a six-speed automatic unit, and an e-CVT for the hybrid version. Expect the SUV to be available with both two-wheel and four-wheel drive options. Maruti Suzuki Escudo: To come packed with features In an attempt to come as an upmarket model, the Maruti Suzuki Escudo will come packing a wide range of features aided by advanced technology. Some of them will be a Dolby Atmos-powered audio system, a powered tailgate, and most interestingly, a Level 2 ADAS suite. Check out Upcoming Cars in India 2025, Best SUVs in India. iPhone OLED supplier, BOE busted for stealing Samsung tech, likely to get 14-year ban in the US
Chinese display manufacturer BOE, also popularly known for supplying OLED displays for Apple iPhone, has been making headlines for quite some time. Currently, the company, among 7 others, has been a part of an investigation by the US Department of Defence for stealing Samsung Display's trade secrets. Now, a Korean news outlet has confirmed that BOE will face a ban in the U.S for 14 years and 8 months. However, the final ruling is not expected until November of this year, but the report claims that the penalties and repercussions have been finalised. BOE will likely face a 14-year ban in the US. Know how it will affect Apple iPhones in the coming months.(Aishwarya Panda-HT) iPhone display manufacturer caught stealing Samsung's display tech The Korean news report highlighted that the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) has issued a preliminary ruling, where it found BOE of violating Article 337 of the Tariff Act by illegally using Samsung Display trade secrets for OLED technology. ITC said, 'Despite Samsung Display's excellent security measures, BOE obtained and used Samsung Display's trade secrets through misappropriation. And caused substantial harm and serious threats to Samsung Display.' As per the violation rules, ITC has been ordered to issue a Limited Exclusion Order (LEO) to BOE. Now, this decision will restrict BOE's OLED display supply in the US for 14 years and 8 months. This time period is calculated based on how much time it took for Samsung Display to introduce the core OLED technology. In addition to the ban, ITC has reportedly demanded to ban marketing, sales, advertising, and inventory sales in the US and local US subsidiaries. However, the ban may come into force during the final ruling, which is expected to be announced in November. This decision could have a significant impact on Apple since the majority of iPhone displays were supplied by BOE. On the other hand, Samsung Display and LG Display could have a major gain from the decision since leading brands, including Apple, will be compelled to rely on these two companies for OLED display supply. As of now, existing iPhone models with BOE displays will continue to sell in the US market, but the future iPhone could come with different OLED technology.
