Trade volume between Qatar, Indonesia reached $1.13bln in 2024: QC Chairman
This came during a speech delivered by His Excellency at the Qatari-Indonesian Business Meeting held on Sunday, in the presence of President of the Republic of Indonesia HE Prabowo Subianto.
The meeting was attended by Second Vice Chairman Rashid bin Hamad Al Athba, along with several board members, the Indonesian delegation, and a number of Qatari businessmen.
HE QC Chairman highlighted that Indonesia is a key trade partner for Qatar, adding that there are numerous successful Qatari investments in Indonesia across various sectors such as communications, banking, and energy. He also pointed out that many Indonesian companies are investing in Qatar, operating in a range of sectors either through partnerships with Qatari partners or under full Indonesian ownership.
HE Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim Al Thani said that Qatar and Indonesia share long-standing and close ties, along with a common vision for sustainable development and shared prosperity.
His Excellency underscored that Qatar continues to strengthen its position as a hub for investment, innovation, and global trade, offering a stable, business-friendly environment, world-class infrastructure, and ambitious development initiatives aligned with the National Vision 2030.
He highlighted the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Qatar Chamber and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce, emphasizing the importance of activating it to further advance bilateral relations between the private sectors of both nations. He added that this will contribute to enhancing economic, investment, and trade cooperation, as well as promoting more frequent visits and meetings between business leaders from both countries.
Such engagements, he noted, will enable both sides to identify and seize joint investment opportunities and explore promising sectors in each nation. Moreover, both countries can take full advantage of the benefits, facilities, and incentives offered by their respective governments to support these efforts.
"QC is fully committed to facilitating trade, joint ventures, and direct investment between Qatari and Indonesian businesses. It encourages the private sectors in both countries to engage actively and build investments and partnerships that will benefit our economies and our peoples," he said.
For his part, Chairman of Indonesia Chamber of Commerce and Industry Anindya Novyan praised the Qatar Chamber's efforts for developing cooperation and partnership between the private sectors of both countries. He noted that Indonesia owns tremendous potential and natural and human resources, as well as a variety of investment opportunities in all sectors such as renewable energy, infrastructure, technology and food security.
In turn, Special Envoy to the President for Climate, Energy and Housing Hashim Djojohadikusumo said that Qatar is one of the most important investors in Indonesia, especially in sectors like banks and communication. He expressed welcome to all investments from all world countries, highlighting that Indonesia is a safe destination for investment. He invited Qatari investors to invest in his country.

Indonesia pardons hundreds of prisoners
Indonesia is set to begin releasing hundreds of inmates from its overcrowded prisons after parliament approved the first stage of President Prabowo Subianto's wide-ranging clemency plan. The first group of 1,116 will begin leaving prisons next week and includes prominent rivals of previous president Joko Widodo who were jailed during his term, as well as Papuan independence activists. House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad and Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas made the announcement late on Thursday after a consultation between the government and party factions in the legislature. Subianto surprised the nation barely two months after he took office in October when he said he planned to grant clemency to 44,000 inmates nationwide. Past Indonesian leaders have rarely used their amnesty powers, which require the approval of parliament. Analysts have cautiously welcomed Subianto's sweeping plan, which could see the release of thousands of inmates as Agtas said it would prioritise political prisoners and inmates with mental and chronic health illnesses, older people, juveniles and those convicted of blasphemy or insulting the country's leader. Among the prisoners set to be released are several prominent opposition figures, including Hasto Kristiyanto, the secretary general of the country's only formal opposition party, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle. Kristiyanto, a former Widodo ally who turned to harshly criticise the former president and his family, was sentenced last week to 3 1/2 years in prison for bribery in a 2019 legislative seat appointment scheme. Agtas said parliament also approved an end to criminal proceedings against former Trade Minister Tom Lembong, a onetime Widodo ally who broke with him during the 2024 presidential election to support political rival Anies Baswedan. Lembong was accused of abusing his authority as minister and sentenced to more than four years in prison. He had been preparing to appeal before Subianto proposed him for clemency. 'Both have demonstrated service to the nation, and our priority now is to strengthen the unity of the nation,' Agtas said. The group also includes six Papuan independence activists serving prison sentences for treason. Agtas said they were released as the government considers their movement unarmed. Authorities are expected to submit a second list of 1,668 inmates to parliament in the near future, he added. Qatari-Saudi cooperation in field of maritime transport and shipping sector discussed
DOHA: The Qatar Chamber (QC) participated in the Qatari-Saudi workshop on the transport, shipping, and maritime sector, held in Riyadh yesterday. The Qatari delegation was headed by Eng. Ali bin Abdul Latif Al-Misnad, Board Member and Chairman of the Services Committee and the Qatari Committee for Shipping and Supply. The delegation included representatives from the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, The Permanent Committee for the Management of Seaportsat the Ministry of Interior, the General Authority of Customs, Mwani Qatar, Milaha, QTerminals, and Gulf Warehousing Company. He noted that there are broad areas of cooperation in transport, shipping, and maritime services, especially in light of the advanced facilities and high-quality services provided by the State of Qatar—particularly in transit (transshipment) operations through Hamad Port, one of the most modern and significant ports in the region in terms of infrastructure, efficiency, and speed of operations. Al-Misnad called on Saudi companies to capitalize on the facilities and services offered by the State to support shipping and logistics operations, which will enhance the smooth flow of goods and expand access to regional and international markets through an advanced and secure logistics gateway. He pointed out that shipping from Hamad Port to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia takes no more than five hours.
