YouTube's Victory in the TV Wars Depends on Parents
Here's a stat that might come as a shock to casual observers of the media ecosystem: The media company that commands the largest percentage of our eyeballs is not the mighty Netflix Inc., the Walt Disney Co. juggernaut or the omnipresent Amazon.com Inc. Prime. It's YouTube. The platform represents 12.4% of audiences' time spent watching television, according to Nielsen Holding Ltd.'s Media Distributor Gauge report for April. That beats Disney's 10.7% (which includes not only the platforms and channels that bear its name but ESPN and Hulu to boot), nearly doubles the 6.8% and 6.7% for Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery, respectively, and pummels the puny 3.5% share for Amazon.
But before we hail the platform as another nail in traditional TV's coffin, it needs to accomplish something else: earn the trust of its users, particularly parents.

'We're at the new house and we figured it would only be appropriate and fun to do our first little reno project with the kids,' Roper said in an Instagram Story video. 'So, what did we do, Emmy?' Emmy chimed in to note that they ripped 'out wallpaper' in the dining room. 'It was a lot of fun,' Roper added. The dining area initially had burgundy-colored walls with white crown molding around the ceiling and two rounded windows. 'The dining room is one of my favorite rooms in the whole house,' Roper added via her Instagram Stories. 'Can't wait to make it 'us.'' Machado homers and hits go-ahead sac fly as the Padres beat the Pirates 6-4
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Manny Machado homered in the first inning and hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in a four-run seventh for the San Diego Padres, who rallied past the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-4 on Sunday to take two of three games in their series. Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run shot to tie Roberto Clemente for third place on Pittsburgh's career list with 240 homers. Adam Frazier also went deep to give the Pirates a 4-1 lead in the fourth. Gavin Sheets slammed face-first into the wall while tracking Frazier's homer and left the game. The Padres started their comeback in the sixth when Jackson Merrill's second double of the game brought in three-time batting champion Luis Arraez, who was aboard on a one-out double. San Diego broke through against reliever Tanner Rainey (0-1), who came on to start the seventh and walked three of the five batters he faced and allowed an RBI single to pinch-hitter Elías Díaz. After Rainey walked Fernando Tatis Jr. to load the bases with one out, Caleb Ferguson came on and allowed Arraez's single that tied it and Machado's sac fly. Tyler Wade beat out a bases-loaded single that Ferguson knocked down but couldn't find in time to make a play. It was the second homer in two games and fifth of the season for the 38-year-old McCutchen, who's in his 17th big league season and 12th with Pittsburgh over two stints. The shot off Randy Vásquez with one out in the third inning gave the Pirates a 2-1 lead. Machado's homer off starter Andrew Heaney was his seventh. Adrian Morejon (3-2) got the win and Robert Suarez pitched a perfect ninth for his major league-leading 19th save. Gaming fans bring electric energy to Rotterdam as TwitchCon arrives
A few metro stops from Rotterdam's Ahoy Arena, chatter is already flowing among gaming fans -- TwitchCon passes swinging from their necks, animal ears perched on their heads. The Dutch city is hosting TwitchCon this weekend -- the annual event run by United States streaming giant Twitch -- where fans can meet their favourite creators and join the celebrations. "I started during the lockdown and I just really like to put on the live stream while I'm working on cosplays or other things," said Larissa, a 24-year-old Dutch woman, who came to meet the creator of the fantasy characters that inspire her. This is Larissa's second TwitchCon, and for the occasion, she is dressed as a half-cyborg, half-minotaur creature with green skin and bright red eyes. "I've been meeting a lot of cool people here, especially when you're in cosplay. People recognize the cosplay and are like, oh, that's the same series I really like. So then you have also something to talk about already." - Electric energy - Like Larissa, thousands of fans from across Europe turned out to meet their favourite creators and watch live e-sports events including Fortnite and Elden Ring, staged by Twitch celebrities. "Most of the work that happens on Twitch is online, it's digital," said Mary Kish, a marketing director at Twitch. "You're streaming with other people, you're hanging out with your community for many hours a week. "What happens at TwitchCon is the culmination of all of that goodwill and all of that joy in person at a con, and the energy is electric," said the 39-year-old, who is from the United States. French streamers JL Tomy and Etoiles -- who have 1.3 million and 1.2 million followers -- were also among those in attendance. "It's fun because there are lots of other partner streamers who are like me," said JL Tomy, 28, whose real name is Toma Abdellaoui. "I'm very much a homebody," said the streamer, whose content focuses on GTA, Valorant, League of Legends and e-sports competitions. Acquired by Amazon in 2014 for roughly $842 million, Twitch is the world's leading streaming platform for gaming, with more than 2.5 million hourly viewers on average. While gaming remains core to Twitch since its 2011 debut, the platform has broadened its reach, drawing in entertainment, sports and political figures, as well as livestreaming other major events. Kish said that Twitch's "Just Chatting" category is now its largest non-gaming segment. "There is a massive variety of other people doing other things. Like food and drink, where people are cooking... people who are showing their aquariums in their houses," Kish said. Reflecting that diversity, visitors attended theatre workshops, built Lego models, or watched the annual Drag Queen show, a TwitchCon staple.
