This first-of-this-kind partnership for Netflix in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) follows similar carriage deals recently struck between major TV networks in Europe and streaming services, starting with Netflix and French broadcaster TF1 and followed by Prime Video and France Televisions, which is another French broadcaster, and by Disney+ and Britain's ITV in the U.K.
As of December 2024 Shahid – which is the MENA region's top streamer – had 4.4 million subscribers, while Netflix had 3 million subs, according to the most recent figures from global analyst Omdia.
'This groundbreaking partnership is one for the books,' said Fadel Zahreddine, group director of emerging media at MBC GROUP is a statement. 'To have two streaming giants – Shahid and Netflix – come together under one platform is something never seen before in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and wider MENA, and we're very excited for what's to come,' the executive added.
'This is definitely the future of streaming and content consumption,' noted Bhanu Chaddha, MBC Group's director of distribution and TV products.
Commented Mohammed Al Kuraishi, head of business development and partnerships, Middle East and Africa at Netflix: 'We're thrilled to have MBC Group join forces with Netflix to bring its content to our audiences under the convenience of a single subscription.'
The MBC/Netflix bundle combines Shahid's vast library of Arabic TV shows, films, and documentaries – including a substantial number of original productions – along with Netflix's full catalogue. The bundle will give customers 'a saving of more than or 21% compared to individual subscriptions,' according to the statement.
Streaming is booming across the MENA region, where the OTT subscription video market, led by MBC's Shahid, generated revenues estimated at $1.2 billion in 2024, according to Omdia, which projects continued MENA market growth.

Wyndham-Ovolo deal adds five Ovolo hotels to the Wyndham network
Wyndham Hotels & Resorts has inked a strategic partnership with Hong Kong-based lifestyle hospitality company Ovolo Group to bring five Ovolo hotels to the Wyndham network later this fall. The hotels are the Ovolo Central in Hong Kong plus four Australian properties: the Ovolo Nishi in Canberra, Ovolo South Yarra in Melbourne, Ovolo The Valley in Brisbane and Ovolo Woolloomooloo in Sydney. All five will be integrated into Wyndham's sales, marketing and distribution platforms and join the Wyndham Rewards loyalty program, which grants them access to roughly 120 million members. Wyndham said that the Ovolo Group will continue to own and manage the Ovolo brand while working with Wyndham "to unlock additional development opportunities throughout Asia Pacific." Ovolo Group launched its upscale Ovolo Hotels concept in 2010, billing it as a design-focused and experiential boutique brand. "Through our partnership with Wyndham, we're flipping the script to unlock bold new growth opportunities by franchising a lifestyle brand without diluting its DNA," said Ovolo Group chief of staff Shivang Jhunjhnuwala, adding that Wyndham's support will help the brand "grow with intention and impact."

Neal McDonough recalls Hollywood backlash after refusing to kiss his costars onscreen
When it comes to his relationship with Hollywood, Neal McDonough is all for kissing and telling. During a July 30 interview on the "Nothing Left Unsaid" podcast, McDonough, known for his roles on series such as "Band of Brothers," "Boomtown" and "Desperate Housewives," opened up about his rocky experience in the entertainment industry due to his longstanding refusal to perform intimate scenes with his female costars. "Sometimes you need to be crucified in life to realize what life is really about," said McDonough, who is a devout Catholic. "It's about family. It's about God. It's about what you can do to make the world a better place while you're here for that finite amount of time." In a January 2019 interview with Closer Weekly, McDonough claimed he was fired from the ABC dramedy "Scoundrels" for refusing to kiss his costar and perform sex scenes. "I won't kiss any other woman because these lips are meant for one woman," said McDonough, who has been married to wife Ruvé since 2003. Star-studded smooching: Justin and Hailey Bieber brush off split rumors with passionate kiss pic McDonough, who was cast as Wolfgang West opposite Virginia Madsen and Patrick Flueger, was reportedly fired three days into production on "Scoundrels." He was later replaced by "JAG" alum David James Elliott. "I'd always had in my contracts that I wouldn't kiss another woman onscreen," McDonough said on "Nothing Left Unsaid." "My wife didn't have any problem with it. It was me, really, who had a problem with it. ... When I couldn't do it, and they couldn't understand it, Hollywood just completely turned on me. They wouldn't let me be part of the show anymore." From 2010 to 2011, McDonough had a low profile in film and TV, largely appearing in voiceover roles and minor performances in "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" and "Captain America: The First Avenger," according to the actor's IMDb page. In early 2012, McDonough made a showbiz comeback with a recurring role on the neo-Western series "Justified." "For two years, I couldn't get a job, and I lost everything you could possibly imagine," McDonough said. "Not just houses and material things, but your swagger, your cool, who you are, your identity — everything. My identity was an actor, and a really good one. And once you don't have that identity, you're kind of lost in a tailspin." 'Are you two an item?' Pamela Anderson, Liam Neeson dodge dating rumors on 'Today' show Neal McDonough reveals the role that made him break his no-kissing rule Although McDonough struggled professionally and personally after the alleged firing, including a bout with alcoholism, "The Last Rodeo" star said he doesn't regret taking a moral stance in his career. He credited his spouse Ruvé and his renewed faith with helping him overcome the ordeal. "When I stopped drinking, everything just kind of changed. Literally, the clouds parted," McDonough said. "I was like, 'Oh, I don't need this crutch. Oh, people are calling me. Oh, I am successful. Oh, I do like myself again. OK, I am God's child, and I have a job to do. Stop wallowing in self-pity. Dust yourself off and go hit it hard." He added: "At 59 years old, I'm more busy than I've ever been in my whole because I have this clarity, I have a goal and I have a vision. I have one boss, and it's God, and I'm going to do whatever it takes to make my boss happy." McDonough has also found a healthy middle ground for navigating intimate scenes onscreen. The actor, who plays retired rodeo star Joe Wainwright in "The Last Rodeo," said he convinced his wife — who is not an actress — to play his love interest in the film. "She was so great in the movie, and to kiss my wife, my real-life wife, in a movie that I wrote and produced and gave glory to (God) in," McDonough said. "I can't imagine anything really better than that in my life when it comes to my career because it's finally one of those things where I made it, and I did it our way." Warner Bros. Discovery is soon to be... Warner Bros. and Discovery Global
Warner Bros. Discovery has begun to prepare for its impending divorce. As announced back in June, each half of the soon-to-be-historic conglomerate has already claimed a CEO and division of the company. Now, those two halves, which will operate as separate, publicly traded entities, have brand new names to take with them into single life. The new company spun out of WBD's current 'Streaming & Studios' division will henceforth be known as 'Warner Bros.,' Variety reports. This is where Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO, HBO Max, Warner Bros. Gaming Studios, and all of their film and TV libraries will live when the separation is complete, which is expected to occur around mid-2026. The streaming and studios company gets to keep the Warner Bros. name to honor 'the legacy of more than a century of industry-defining storytelling,' the company said in a statement. The current 'Global Networks' division will be called 'Discovery Global.' That company will cover WBD's entertainment, sports and news TV brands, including CNN, Discovery, and TNT Sports. It will also house digital platforms like Discovery+ and Bleacher Report, as well as a number of free-to-air channels across Europe. Its name was chosen 'in recognition of the affinity and value this name has around the world in entertainment, news and sports,' the company said. As previously announced, current WBD CEO David Zaslav will head up the new Warner Bros., while current CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels will take over Discovery Global. Zaslav will have to make due with a couple million less than he's making now, which makes sense considering the company's major debt issue is what got it into this mess in the first place. Regardless of any responsibility he may have had for those money troubles as CFO, Wiedenfels will receive an increased compensation package to 'reflect his expanded responsibilities' as CEO of Discovery Global. The pay cut doesn't seem to have diminished Zaslav's opinion of the company. (Well, at least not publicly.) 'We will proudly continue the more than century-long legacy of Warner Bros. through our commitment to bringing culture-defining stories, characters and entertainment to audiences around the world,' he said in a statement. 'Over the past several years, we have made important strides across the business, launching and investing in a profitable, global streaming service and reinvigorating our studios to return them again to an industry leading position. With our unmatched portfolio of storytelling IP coupled with our incredible creative partners, and now an executive team of proven, bold and committed creative and corporate leaders, we are in a strong position to launch and continue to meaningfully grow a company worthy of our storied past.' Hopefully the company's future will be a little less chaotic. More from A.V.
