Indian Express23-07-2025
The Chandigarh Police's Operations Cell Wednesday carried out a mock drill at Sector 17 ISBT to test preparedness and coordination among counter-terror teams and emergency services ahead of the Independence Day celebrations.
The exercise, conducted under the directions of SP (Operations) Geetanjali Khandelwal and the supervision of DSP (Operations) Vikas Sheokand, simulated a bomb threat at counters 7 and 8 of the bus terminal. The area was quickly cordoned off and evacuated by Operations Cell commandos, while HIT teams, the Bomb Detection Squad, and the dog squad traced a dummy explosive device.
Quick Reaction Teams, PCR vehicles, ambulances from GMSH-16 and the Police Hospital, the fire brigade, Civil Defence units, the mobile forensic team, Crime Branch personnel, and officers from Sector 17 police station responded as part of the coordinated drill.
After a thorough sweep of the bus stand revealed no further threats, the dummy device was safely transported to the Police Lines in Sector 26 in a sandbag truck, accompanied by pilot PCR vehicles and an escort vehicle from the Operations Cell for defusing.
Officials said the exercise was aimed at fine-tuning inter-agency coordination and ensuring readiness to respond to any emergency during the upcoming national celebrations.

Manjha Sellers Keep It Going Despite Ban

New Delhi: Investigations into recent seizures of Chinese manjha revealed a worrying surge in the covert sale of this banned and dangerous kite string across various markets in the city, especially as Independence Day approached—a time when kite flying reaches a high. Despite the ban, sellers found new ways every year to evade law enforcement authorities while continuing the trade. During the recent crackdowns, police found that Chinese manjha was being sold discreetly using code words and through advance bookings. The string was delivered to buyers at pre-decided locations to avoid detection. According to police sources, sellers communicated with potential buyers through encrypted messaging apps or platforms like WhatsApp. In some cases, specific code names were used to refer to Chinese manjha in online chats. So far, Delhi Police has seized over 1,500 reels of this lethal thread. "After crackdowns begin every year, sellers often shift operations online. They use code words and encrypted apps to communicate. We've seen cases where buyers and sellers interact and decide drop-off points through messages to stay anonymous," said an investigator. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? "Before fulfilling an order, the supplier often conducts a recce of the buyer to confirm his identity and ensure that he isn't part of a police trap. Only after verifying that the person is genuine, the delivery is made." Each Chinese manjha spool costs anywhere between Rs 700 and Rs 2,000, depending on demand and availability. Buyers are often asked to pay extra for delivery. One of the crackdowns occurred in June when a team led by inspector Sunil Kumar Kalkhande, under the supervision of DCP (crime) Vikram Singh, found 1,170 reels of Chinese manjha from Kamla Market and Jeevan Park in Uttam Nagar. Two persons were arrested. In separate operations, 325 reels were seized from northeast Delhi's Nand Nagri and 31 from Gokalpuri. In June, a youth on a scooter was killed in north Delhi when his throat was slit by a Chinese manjha on Rani Jhansi Road in north Delhi's Bara Hindu Rao. The deceased was identified as 22-year-old Yash Goswami, a spare parts business owner. In another incident, a two-wheeler rider was injured after his face came in contact with a kite string on the Shastri Park flyover in east Delhi.

Bus attacked after Tripura girl's ‘molestation'

Agartala: The Sepahijala district administration clamped Section 163 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) for 24 hours after a group of tribals attacked a bus in which an 18-year-old girl was allegedly molested by a co-passenger on Tuesday night. The girl, currently undergoing an air hostess training in Guwahati, was returning home from Agartala when the incident took place. The girl told police that the accused got down in Bishalgarh and thereafter she informed her neighbours. Following this, agitated tribals, led by former militant leader and BJP's ally in the state govt, Tipra Motha leader Soren Debbarma, allegedly ransacked the bus and assaulted passengers in the presence of police. Several other vehicles and shops in the nearby market were also ransacked. SP (Sepahijala) Bijoy Debbarma, along with his police team, was allegedly present nearby during the vandalism. Prabir Bhowmik, a passenger travelling in the same bus, said, "We sought help from police standing in the market to rescue us but they didn't respond. We were confined inside the bus for almost three hours. They vandalised the bus, assaulted us, and attacked a few shops and the people who attempted to stop the vandalism. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pirates Climb Aboard Cargo Ship - Watch What The Captain Did Next Tips and Tricks Undo They neither prevented the attackers, nor used any force to control the situation." He alleged that police intervened only after the attack stopped and shifted at least seven injured persons to a local hospital. Police said there has been no further escalation so far. The statement of the girl, who has been admitted to a local hospital, has been recorded and an investigation has been launched. Meanwhile, Amra Bangalee, a platform of non-tribals, alleged that it was a pre-planned event aimed at inciting violence between two communities. They demanded an inquiry into the roles of police and the girl, who had not raised an alarm till the accused left the bus. "Without informing police and bus staff, why did she call her community people to assemble in Bishramganj? Does it not indicate something fishy to create communal tension ahead of Independence Day celebrations? Even if she called her friends or relatives, how did Tipra Motha leaders get into the scene and attack all non-tribals? These need to be answered clearly," said Amra Bangalee state secretary Gouranga Rudrapal.
