14 Unforgettable Looks at the Critics Choice Awards

New York Times08-02-2025

The question of what celebrities will wear to an awards show always looms large before any ceremony. But it took on new significance ahead of the 30th Critics Choice Awards in Santa Monica, Calif., on Friday: After postponing the event twice because of the Los Angeles wildfires, organizers announced that a red-carpet preshow would not be part of the televised broadcast.
How might that decision influence the fashion choices of the television and movie stars in attendance? Would they be riskier? More relaxed?
As people started arriving, it soon became clear that absence of TV cameras on the carpet hadn't stopped most from taking big style swings. For myriad reasons — most of them good — these 14 looks were among the most memorable from the Critics Choice Awards.
Nicole Kidman: Most Humphrey Bogart!
Instead of a gown, the 'Lioness' and 'Babygirl' actress went with a broad-shouldered Saint Laurent suit jacket, high-waist pants and a polka-dot tie, an ensemble that evoked the men's wear of Old Hollywood.
Ariana Grande: Most Jellyfish!
The 'Wicked' star wafted down the carpet in a Dior couture dress with a tentacle-like fringe hanging from its hoop skirt.
Colman Domingo: Most Layered!
The 'Sing Sing' actor, a noted clotheshorse, did not settle for a classic three-piece suit: His sleek monochromatic look consisted of at least five items, including a sumptuous coat draped suavely over his shoulders.
Moeka Hoshi: Most Tubular!
The 'Shogun' actress made a strong case for tube tops as formal wear in a breezy red Louis Vuitton ensemble that also included a pleated capelet and a flowy skirt.
Demi Moore: Most Insectoid!
In a navy Schiaparelli couture gown with strips of fabric coming apart toward the bottom, the actress, a star of 'The Substance,' resembled a glamorous beetle shedding its exoskeleton.
Lupita Nyong'o: Most Tulle!
There was something both sinister and sweet about the actress's Chanel couture look of floral-print bustier dress shrouded in yards and yards of black tulle.
Leighton Meester and Adam Brody: Most Prom Court!
The married actors, in a Dior ball gown and a Dior tuxedo, looked as if they were about to be crowned the queen and the king of a certain high school dance. That wasn't the only reason Ms. Meester and Mr. Brody, a star of 'Nobody Wants This,' were a sentimental sight on the carpet: The married actors were among those whose homes were destroyed by the Los Angeles wildfires.
Angelina Jolie: Most Grandma's Lace!
Did the 'Maria' actress's lace Elie Saab gown look a little like an antique tablecloth? Yes. Did she pull it off? Yes?
Hannah Einbinder: Most Geometric!
As alluring as the construction of the 'Hacks' actress's Louis Vuitton gown was the grace and poise with which she wore it.
Joey King: Most Crafty!
Ruffles, a bow and crystals were just some of the components of the actress's Miu Miu dress, which had a girlish D.I.Y. charm.
Marissa Bode: Most Quicksilver!
Soft curves and a diaphanous silvery fabric were elements of the 'Wicked' actress's gown that made it look like liquid metal.
Issa López: Most Gallery Owner!
In an artsy combination of sculptural statement necklace, woven shawl and pleated skirt, the director and writer could have gone straight from the awards ceremony to an exhibition opening.
Bridget Everett: Most Runs on Dunkin!
The comedian and actress paired her fiery minidress with a clutch bearing what seemed to be two Ds in the pink and orange colors associated with a certain doughnut chain — the same chain that just released tracksuits to promote its new campaign for Super Bowl LIX on Sunday.

Wicked For Good: Your Questions About The Cast And Release Date (Plus The Scarecrow And Tin Man) Answered

Excitement for the musical sequel Wicked For Good is really starting to build following the release of the new film's first trailer. We'll admit that when we first heard that the stage musical Wicked was being split into two, we rolled our eyes a little – but after seeing Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in action last year, we now can't wait for the second instalment. There are still a few months to go until our next trip to Oz, but we know you might have a few questions between now and then. So, here's everything we know about the second movie… Initially billed as Wicked Part 2, it was revealed towards the end of 2024 that the sequel would be given the subtitle For Good, based on the show-stopping eleven o'clock performed as a duet between Elphaba and Glinda towards the end of the musical. The decision was met with a mixed response, but Ariana has claimed that Wicked For Good was actually already being touted as a title for the project when it was being filmed. 'I'm glad it's official now because we grew rather attached to it,' she said last year. 'It's just the perfect title because this project really has changed us for good.' Fans of the original musical will know that the second act begins with Thank Goodness, an ensemble number that helps catch us all up with what's gone down among the cast of characters since we last saw them. Besides that, we can look forward to the dramatic Elphaba number No Good Deed, her duet with Fiyero, As Long As You're Mine, and, as mentioned above, For Good, which has become one of Wicked's signature tunes. There's also another solo for the Wizard, Wonderful which… yeah… let's not even go there. While Wicked's original composer extended the One Short Day sequence in the first film, he's gone one step further in the sequel, and penned two new songs. Director Jon M Chu recently confirmed that one of these will be a new solo for Cynthia, while another will be performed by Ariana. Wicked itself is a retelling of the events of The Wizard Of Oz, retold from the perspective of its witches, Elphaba (known in the 1939 film as simply the Wicked Witch Of The West) and Glinda (who comes to be known as the Good Witch Of The North). Act one begins with Munchkinland celebrating the news of Elphaba's death, before taking us back through her younger years to explore her years at school. The second act – on which Wicked For Good is based – revisits the characters later in life, with Elphaba exiled and a public enemy, thanks to efforts from the Wizard Of Oz and Shiz professor Madame Morrible, and still harbouring feelings for Fiyero, to whom Glinda is now engaged. It also addresses more directly how specific events in the Wizard Of Oz came to be, including Dorothy's arrival in Oz, and her becoming friends with the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion. Evidently, yes. While Dorothy is never seen on stage in the original production of Wicked, we've already caught a glimpse of her in the opening moments of the first film. Dorothy is also seen – once again from behind – in the latest trailer for Wicked For Good, suggesting the character will be more prominently featured in the movie than the stage musical. Chu told Vanity Fair: 'We tread lightly, but try to make more sense of how [Dorothy's arrival] impacts our girls and our characters than maybe the show does.' 'We're delicate. We're delicate. We're delicate,' he then insisted, reassuring anyone concerned about him taking any big swings away from the source material. It was previously reported that Matilda star Alisha Weir portrays Dorothy in the movie, though this is yet to be confirmed. Alright – we're going to be giving away some major Wicked spoilers now, so if you've never seen the stage musical and want to avoid these twists, just keep scrolling down to the next section. Did you hear that? Spoilers are ahead. Scroll to the next section if you want to avoid them. OK, we think they're gone. Let's proceed… So, Elphaba inadvertently creates the Scarecrow when she casts a spell on Fiyero – played by Jonathan Bailey – in an attempt to save his life in No Good Deed. The Tin Man, meanwhile, is created by Nessarose, who is played in the film by Marissa Bode. She attempts to use magic herself for the first time on Boq (Ethan Slater's character) to prevent her from leaving him, only for it to go awry, and turn him into the mechanic woodsman. As you've probably guessed, the Cowardly Lion is that same cub who Elphaba and Fiyero rescue in the first movie. Right here! Enjoy: The film will hit cinemas on Friday 21 November, with the film expected to be re-released in selective cinemas before then, to allow everyone to revisit the events of the first film. 9 Things We Need To Talk About Immediately In The New Wicked For Good Trailer 22 Weird And Wonderful Behind-The-Scenes Secrets You Probably Never Knew About How Wicked Was Made

Cynthia Erivo Says ‘I Forgive You' On New Album

Cynthia Erivo Acclaimed singer and actress Cynthia Erivo is heading back to Oz later this year in Wicked: For Good, but between her turns as Elphaba on the big screen, the Grammy and Tony winner is returning to music with her second studio album, I Forgive You. I Forgive You arrives four years after Erivo's debut LP Ch. 1 Vs. 1 and is an intimate look into the ups and the downs of the star's personal life. She first teased the album with lead single 'Replay' and followed it up with 'Worst of Me' in April. 'This album is a collection of stories and songs that are both personal for things that are happening now, things that have happened in the past, and I think some of which I have had to forgive people for. And honestly, some of which I've had to forgive myself for. And I loved the idea of calling it this title, because it's a simple concept, but not an easy one. And not one that we as humans are very good at, often,' she told The Associated Press of the project. Recording I Forgive You, then, was a cathartic expression for Erivo. 'The meat of each of the pieces that you listen to is the voice, so that you can hear the lyrics, you can hear the song, you can hear the emotion in it,' she said. 'Everything you hear in there is real and tangible.' Singing and acting have been intertwined in Erivo's career for years, and for her, the two work in tandem to improve the other. 'They feed each other,' she explained. 'When I sing, I feel free and I feel open, which means that when I go and act — because I've given myself that experience — the want to close off again sort of goes away. So, when I'm on a set, I'm as open as I am when I am singing. I'm waiting to receive whatever I'm getting from my counterpart or whoever's opposite me so I can actually listen. Because the act of writing and singing actually is also the act of listening.'

We Know When Wicked For Good's Trailer Will Be Debuting, But There's A Bit Of A Catch

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. It's kind of an understatement to say that director Jon M. Chu's Wicked: For Good is a 'hotly anticipated' entry on the 2025 movie schedule. Anyone having doubts about my prediction could easily point to the fact that despite Universal's 2025 CinemaCon panel showing off some footage of the picture, fans haven't had the chance to gaze upon a trailer for the conclusion of this Oz-ified musical story yet. Well, I've got some good news and some news you might not be too pleased with, as you'll be able to see Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in full regalia real soon. However, it sounds like there's only one way you'll be able to get back to Oz for For Good's first trailer, and you'll have to click more than your heels. First, here's the good news: per a press release from Universal Pictures, the release of Wicked: For Good's first trailer is set to take place on June 4th! In fact, the event is being billed as something truly 'global,' as it's going to take place 'simultaneously in all North American time zones.' And that's where the catch comes in, as it sounds like you'll only be able to see this sizzle reel in theaters. But at least it's attached to special bring-back screenings of Wicked, which you can currently purchase tickets for. So it's not like you're showing up for a preview and then dipping to go back to lawn work. Now, I'm sure there are plenty of people who aren't afraid to return to a theater near them to see For Good's first trailer and laugh, cry, and potentially sing along with this meteoric box office hit of 2024. However, one has to wonder how many of those fans are ready to follow through with that desire, especially on a random Wednesday. Peacock TV: from $7.99 a month/$79.99 a yearAll it takes is $7.99 a month to jump into the basic plan for Peacock TV. But with that investment, you not only get to stream Wicked, but you'll also find the documentary Defying Gravity: The Curtain Rises on Wicked. And with a special live musical event heading to NBC and Peacock this fall, you may want to keep that subscription active and enjoy everything the streaming home of NBC, Universal, and Bravo has to offer! View Deal While I'm someone who always advocates for the theatrical experience, especially when revisiting old favorites, I'd be foolish not to mention that a Peacock subscription could very easily scratch this itch for some, and right at this very moment. However, it would seem that Universal has some surprises in store for those who do choose to fly into the western sky once more to see Wicked and its sequel's trailer in theaters. So if you do go to this Wicked screening on June 4th, there's apparently going to be exclusive 'giveaways' for attendees. While that's a rather vague promise, what's for certain is that you'll be able to land yourself a commemorative poster for Wicked: For Good. And it I had to guess, it'll be a print of the image you see below: Don't take this the wrong way, but I can practically hear fans weeping over the mere invocation of that title, and the image of Elphaba and Glinda separated by a wide chasm that leads down the Yellow Brick Road. I mean, this is everything you would want out of a teaser poster - and it looks pretty spectacular. Though I'm not a die-hard obsessive over Wicked, I did really enjoy the first half of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande's journey. And while this isn't a $16K charity performance with Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, I'm inclined to check this out for myself. Provided, of course, that this announcement hasn't led to another case similar to how Sinners' second IMAX 70mm run instantly sold out. So if you're rejoicifying that Wicked will be back in theaters AND you'll get to see the first trailer for its sequel during this special screening, go grab your tickets now! And don't forget that Wicked: For Good is set to hit theaters on November 21st; which may lead to some unsurprising double feature events. At least, one could only hope.
