AFP pic LONDON: Avowed misogynist and radical social media influencer Andrew Tate and his brother have been charged with several counts of rape, assault and trafficking, UK prosecutors said Wednesday. The accusations, which date back to between 2012 to 2015, were authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service in January 2024, but have only been revealed now. 'We can confirm that we have authorised charges against Andrew and Tristan Tate for offences including rape, human trafficking, controlling prostitution and actual bodily harm against three women,' prosecutors said in a statement. Former kickboxer Tate, 38, faces 10 charges including rape, actual bodily harm, human trafficking and controlling prostitution relating to all three women. His brother, Tristan, 36, has been accused of 11 similar charges against one woman. 'A European arrest warrant was issued in England in 2024, and as a result the Romanian courts ordered the extradition to the UK of Andrew and Tristan Tate,' prosecutors said.
Advertisement 'However, the domestic criminal matters in Romania must be settled first.' Andrew Tate faces legal action in several countries, including some cases where he is accused alongside his brother. In Romania, the Tate brothers face separate allegations of trafficking minors, sexual intercourse with a minor and money laundering. Both men, who have dual British-US nationality, have denied all charges against them. Andrew Tate hit back with a post on the social network X on Wednesday. 'The UK government accuses the 'innocent' while murderers, violent illegals, and corrupt leaders walk free. This is not justice - it's betrayal!,' he wrote. Tate, the figurehead of the online masculinist movement, went to Florida with his brother in February, marking the first time they had left Romania since their 2022 arrest. PETALING JAYA: Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil took social media giants Meta and X to task today for not doing enough to tackle cyberbullying, scams, and harmful content online. He said only TikTok had shown real commitment by voluntarily joining the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (CMCF). 'We cannot have these social media platforms washing their hands of content that could also create online harm, particularly related to suicide,' he said when launching CMCF's guidelines for the reporting and sharing of suicide-related content here today. Fahmi said he had asked CMCF to engage with Meta, X, and other major players, but that none came forward to participate. He said TikTok, on the other hand, took the initiative 'very early on, even before we came up with the licensing regime for social media and online messaging systems'. 'I wholeheartedly applaud TikTok's approach to voluntarily becoming a member of Content Forum,' he said, contrasting this with the 'far from satisfactory' response from Meta and X. 'Facebook, for example, said that they are going to be licensed. But they must understand that Content Forum is not government-led. It's industry-led. It's actually in their interest to participate so they can help develop best practices and codes of conduct.' Malaysians lost RM53.88 billion to online scams in 2024 – around 3% of the gross domestic product. From 2021 to April 2024, online scams claimed over US$708 million (RM3.18 billion) with more than 95,800 victims, according to the State of Scam Report 2024. Suicide rates have also risen sharply. In 2022, Malaysia recorded 1,068 suicide deaths – up 66.6% from 641 cases in 2020. Selangor had the highest number of cases (305), followed by Kuala Lumpur (135), Johor and Penang (123 each). Fahmi also called on vernacular media to support suicide prevention efforts, saying that mental health resources should be made available in all major languages. 'We need to reach out to the vernacular press. A lot of the content is in English, but our efforts must be understood in all languages,' he said. He urged journalists to adhere to CMCF's guidelines when reporting on suicides, particularly by protecting victims' identities and families' privacy to avoid 'copycat' incidents. 'Reporting about suicide is most sensitive and most harrowing for any journalist (covering the tragedy). We should not divulge the location or the personality in such tragedies,' he said. He said the CMCF guidelines also covered the broader digital ecosystem, providing practical advice on how to safely share lived experiences, avoid trauma-triggering content, and guide people towards available support services. 'This comprehensive approach reflects an understanding that every individual plays a role in creating a safer and more empathetic content environment,' he said. 279 foreigners denied entry into Malaysia, highest number recorded since 2023

It said this was the highest number of Not-To-Land (NTL) cases recorded since the establishment of the monitoring force in 2023, adding that it had ordered the immediate deportation of all of them. 'There is an increasing trend of foreigners entering illegally, particularly during peak arrival times and holiday seasons in Malaysia,' it said in a statement today. The AKPS also said that the congestion and high flow of visitors would often be manipulated by a small group of individuals to try and sneak into the country by abusing existing entry facilities. It added that deportation measures are part of ongoing efforts to tighten border security control, thus ensuring only eligible individuals who fulfil all stipulated conditions are allowed to enter Malaysia. 'All the individuals involved were ordered to return to their countries of origin immediately after the documentation processes and further inspections carried out by AKPS officers,' it said. Since its establishment, the AKPS has had a positive impact in increasing the effectiveness of early screening as well as the detection of at-risk visitors. Wild elephant with a sweet tooth raids Thai grocery store
The male elephant was seen inside the grocery store, with his head and body brushing against the ceiling, snacking on food. - STAY IN THAILAND/FACEBOOK SINGAPORE: A grocery store in north-eastern Thailand had a larger-than-life freeloader – a wild elephant who casually strolled in to snack on some sweet treats before making an exit. The male elephant, named Plai Biang Lek, is well-known among locals near Khao Yai national park – about 200km from Bangkok – for his habit of venturing into nearby human settlements. He had previously wondered into a nearby village and raided a small eatery for food. However, his latest intrusion on Monday (June 2) marks the first time he has entered a grocery store. Videos and pictures on social media showed the elephant inside the packed store, munching on snacks while his head and body brushed against the ceiling. After satisfying his craving, he strolled out. The shop owner, known as Ploy, told Thai media that she was serving customers when the elephant ambled into the shop at 3pm that day, causing people to flee for their safety. She contacted officers from the national park, who arrived and tried to shoo it away. Undeterred, the elephant continued to look for food and scoffed down sweet, crispy Thai snacks and chicken eggs, reported Thai daily Khaosod English. His snack selection was interesting, the newspaper said, as elephants usually prefer salty food when raiding human settlements.
