Delhi court charges bjp mp for assaulting cop

Hindustan Times04-05-2025

A Delhi court on Saturday formed charges against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member of Parliament YogenderChandolia for assaulting a public servant on duty in 2020.
The incident took place on October 7, 2020 when Chandolia, now a BJP Lok Sabha MP from northwest Delhi, allegedly got into a scuffle with a traffic police officer on crane duty, over removal of wrongly parked vehicles in Prasad Nagar area.
The additional chief judicial magistrate Neha Mittal of Rouse Avenue Court framed charges under IPC sections 186 (obstructing public servant in the discharge of his public functions), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 353 (assault to deter a public servant from discharge of their duty) against Chandolia after noting that his actions amounted to using criminal force on the traffic officer, also the complainant in the case.
'It is alleged that when the complainant tried to board the crane, the accused tried to pull him down. Statement of witnesses have been recorded by police…the said allegation amounts to using criminal force,' judicial magistrate Mittal said.
Further, the court noted that the complainant is a public servant and the said act constituted the offence of assault to obstruct a public servant from performing official duties.
Chandolia's lawyer had argued presence of 'material loopholes' in the police case as there was no CCTV footage of the incident nor any independent witnesses who could corroborate the allegations. It was further argued that there was a verbal confrontation between the complainant and the accused, which does not constitute a physical assault.
The traffic officer alleged that Chandolia incited people against him and Chandolia's associates snatched his phone after the officer tried to record a video of the incident. Chandolia was granted bail in the case on January 8 this year after he was summoned in the case.

Bengaluru: Nearly two years after a 68-year-old stonecutter lost his life in a road accident, a Bengaluru court has awarded his family Rs 8 lakh in compensation. The order was passed by judge Shreyansh Doddamani of the 21st additional small causes court and motor accident claims tribunal on May 27. The fatal accident occurred on NH-75 near Bethamangala Cross in Kolar district on June 28, 2023. The tribunal noted that the respondents failed to counter these findings or provide contrary evidence. Although the family claimed a monthly income of Rs 30,000 for the deceased, the court accepted a notional income of Rs 16,000 due to a lack of documentary proof, using Karnataka Legal Services Authority guidelines. It awarded Rs 6.4 lakh for loss of dependency. Additional compensation included Rs 48,400 in spousal consortium, Rs 18,150 each for loss of estate and funeral expenses, and Rs 40,000 each to the sons in filial consortium—bringing the total to Rs 8 lakh. The court ordered Tata AIG to deposit the compensation within a month, with 70% allocated to the wife and 15% each to the sons, along with 6% annual interest from the date of filing. Citing Supreme Court and Kerala High Court rulings, the judge affirmed that even adult, earning children are legal heirs entitled to compensation, noting, "Loss of a parent cannot be measured by financial dependence alone."

BJP leaders in Jharkhand, Bihar laud Modi govt.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Smriti Irani in Jharkhand and Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal in Bihar listed out the achievements to commemorate the 11 years of the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre. Addressing a press conference at the BJP office in Patna, Mr. Meghwal said the scale and speed of the schemes have changed under the Prime Minister's leadership. He cites an example that earlier also there was a plan to build houses but the amount was less and it took more time. 'But when the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana was launched by the Modi government, the amount increased, the scale increased and the time of its completion also decreased,' Mr. Meghwal said in the presence of Bihar BJP president Dilip Kumar Jaiswal. In Ranchi, a professional meet was organised by the BJP's Ranchi Rural District wing. Speaking as the chief guest, Ms. Irani said, 'The BJP government under the leadership of Modiji is not hungry for power but to serve the poor farmers and women in villages.' The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha termed the celebration a 'mockery of people's pain and unanswered questions'. Party spokesperson Tanuj Khatri said the ground reality here does not reflect the grand celebrations. 'It echoes with the cries of the people, their struggles,' he said.

Highlighting 11 years of Modi govt., BJP attacks TMC govt.

Union Ministers and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders Bhupendra Yadav and Sukanta Majumdar on Wednesday shared highlights from the 11 years of the Narendra Modi-led Central government and accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of depriving the State of the Centre's development initiatives and schemes. During an event of the BJP in Kolkata, Mr. Yadav, the Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, said that Ms. Banerjee's rule will be remembered for 'heinous crimes against women, teachers losing their jobs in a scam, communal violence in Murshidabad, and massive brain drain from the State due to Trinamool-aligned mafia, strange land policies, and an anti-business attitude'. 'Prime Minister Modi has governed the country with consistency and continuity, and brought transparency to its public initiatives,' Mr. Yadav said. He claimed that while the Central government has not shirked its responsibility in aiding development in the State, the West Bengal government has 'stopped' the Centre's initiatives from being fully implemented in the State. Mr. Majumdar claimed that the State's government has based its actions on 'corruption, appeasement politics, communal disharmony' and alleged that industry would have flourished in West Bengal if the Trinamool government operated with transparency and welcomed the Centre's development initiatives. The legislators also expressed confidence in the BJP forming the government in West Bengal following the Assembly elections in 2026 and said it will 'restore the State's legacy and glory'.
