Petros to award offshore CCUS contracts by Q2
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said Petros is currently finalising the agreements with the successful bidders for the offshore storage sites.
"Petros, as the appointed resource manager, launched the Sarawak Bid Round 2024, offering three offshore storage sites with significant geological potential," Awang Tengah, who is also the state international trade, industry and investment minister, said in his winding-up speech in the State Legislative Assembly here today.
He said Petros, together with investors, has committed over RM100 million to assess Sarawak's carbon storage potential and build a comprehensive database.
"These efforts will create a globally competitive carbon storage portfolio, fortifying Sarawak's expertise, investment appeal and sustainable low-carbon economic growth," he said.
He said Sarawak is poised to lead regional CCUS efforts, leveraging over 65 per cent of Malaysia's geological carbon storage potential.
He said Sarawak is at the forefront of national and regional decarbonisation efforts, driving sustainable solutions and enhancing its pivotal role in the global low-carbon economy.
Awang Tengah also said that Petros has expanded its upstream operations with 21 production sharing contracts, including 12 exploration projects and equity in five producing fields, achieving 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
"The SK433 Adong Kecil West site in Miri will produce its first onshore oil next year," he said.
Awang Tengah said the state oil company has committed RM8.5 billion in capital expenditure over the next three years for infrastructure development and resource commercialisation.
He said that by 2030, the Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR) is expected to attract RM60 billion in investments and contribute significantly to Sarawak's economy.
He said the initiatives reinforce Sarawak's leadership in sustainable energy, driving economic growth while advancing global decarbonisation efforts.

PTT Synergy to invest RM2.3bil in smart warehouses over next two years
SUNGAI BULOH: PTT Synergy Group Bhd has allocated RM2.3 billion in capital expenditure (capex) over the next two years for its automated warehouse business, which will cover the development of four new automated warehouses. PTT Synergy, whose business activities include construction as well as warehouse solutions and distribution centres, is strengthening its offerings by providing high-tech total intralogistics and industrial solutions. Group managing director Teo Swee Phin said the company has 15 automated warehouse projects in the pipeline in Malaysia and aims to increase the contribution from the new robotics segment going forward. "We have a building storage capacity of 600,000 pallets, which translates into six million square feet (sq ft) of warehouse facilities. Our goal is to increase this to two million pallets within the next three to five years,' he told reporters after the grand opening of the company's first smart logistics facility, PTT Logistics Hub 1, here today. PTT Logistics Hub 1, built on a 2.63-hectare site with a gross development value of RM180 million, features 168,000 sq ft of warehouse space and an additional 90,000 sq ft dedicated to operations. It can accommodate about 31,000 pallet positions. Currently the facility has an occupancy rate of around 70 per cent and is expected to reach full occupancy within the next two months. He explained that while PTT Synergy has three core segments, namely construction, real estate, and the upcoming robotics segment. The robotics segment, which comprises the automated warehouses, is expected to take about three years to develop, with the goal of matching the income currently generated by the construction business. "At present, our real estate segment is catching up rapidly and has already surpassed the construction segment in terms of profitability. While our construction division typically generates about RM24 million annually, the real estate segment is projected to generate RM50 million per year and targeted to reach RM100 million in the near future,' he said. Teo said that for robotics, the income generated will be comparable to that of the construction segment if it achieved its two million pallet positions over the next three to five years. "This strategic diversification is aimed at making our business more resilient and sustainable in the long run,' he added. He emphasised that each of the three segments would contribute equally to the group's income, reducing reliance on a contribution from a single segment such as construction, which is subject to volatility due to fluctuating costs and demand. Teo said that the robotic leasing model will provide recurring income for the company. Commenting on its international presence, Teo said that the company is ready to venture regionally, with the first overseas destination being Thailand. "We are targeting to begin operations in Thailand by the end of this year. While the Thai venture is still in the early stages, pending due diligence and further familiarisation with local regulatory policies, we view this as a significant step in our regional growth strategy,' he said. He disclosed that PTT Synergy has identified an 8.09-hectare land located in Rayong, Thailand, which is adjacent to a client's site. On the outlook, Teo said next year is expected to be significantly better for the group, supported by revenue contributions from all three segments. - Bernama

Abang Jo declines to comment on Rafizi's remarks on gas rights negotiations
KUCHING: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg has declined to comment on former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's remarks that oversights in the negotiations on gas resource rights between PETRONAS and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) could have serious repercussions on the nation's economy. "That is his view. I have no comment," he told reporters after opening the Public Sector Financial Transformation Conference here on Wednesday (Aug 6). Rafizi was reported to have said that PETRONAS risked losing between RM15bil and RM20bil annually if Sarawak's claims to gas resources were accepted without considering the existing overall financial structure. In the latest episode of his podcast "Yang Berhenti Menteri" on Monday (Aug 4), he said PETRONAS contributed RM30bil to RM35bil annually to the government's coffers. "If this sum drops, it would have an impact on the nation's ability to fund basic services," he said, adding that this included schools, hospitals, infrastructure development, pensions and civil service salaries in Sarawak and across the country. Rafizi also said Sarawakians deserved more revenue from their resources, but the negotiations should result in a win-win solution. "I agree that Sarawak should get more, but we need to find a way that will not impact the industry, PETRONAS' sustainability and the country," he said.

The programme, organised by the Welfare Bureau and the Visits Bureau of Mutiara GRS, with the delegation led by wife of the Chief Minister, Datin Seri Julia Salag, reached out to special needs children, single mothers, and special education students at several schools around Tawau. Advertisement Julia said the programme is a continuation of Mutiara GRS's year-round efforts to visit various districts and deliver direct assistance to communities in need. 'Last month we were in Nabawan, today (Saturday) in Tawau, and next month we will visit another interior area.' 'This is a special experience for us as we get to engage with special needs children and assist those in need,' she said. She hopes this effort will inspire other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to also take an active role in advocating for community welfare. Advertisement Meanwhile, one of the aid recipients, Sumarti Calla, 53, from Kampung Ranggu, expressed relief at being selected, given the increasingly challenging cost of living. As a single mother, she said the financial and material assistance she received had been a great help in supporting her four children, including three who are still in school. She said that with the rising cost of living, many single mothers don't know where to begin, but she felt relieved and grateful to receive support from Datin Seri Julia and Mutiara GRS. 'I sell food, some days I earn RM100, other days less. This assistance has been a great help to me,' she said, holding back tears. Meanwhile, Rusia Mahmud, 58, from Kampung Sungai Gading, Wakuba, received the assistance on behalf of his mother, a single mother currently undergoing treatment for gallbladder swelling. He said that his family deeply appreciates the assistance from Mutiara GRS, which means a great deal to them, as they honestly did not expect that anyone would still remember or care. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
