Top QB situations to watch in NFL preseason week 2, including Caleb Williams' prime-time close up
It used to be standard across the league that starters would play a series or two in the first preseason game, a little more in the second, a half or a little more in the third and then they would completely sit in the fourth. We don't even have a fourth preseason game anymore. And some teams don't play their starters at all in August games.
Week 2 of the preseason is a mixed bag. Some teams that played starters in the opener won't this week, because they got extra work in joint practices during the week. The Miami Dolphins are a good example; their starters played last week but coach Mike McDaniel said starters would sit for the game this week after joint practices against the Detroit Lions. Whether starters play this week, or in the preseason at all, varies from team to team.
Some teams still have quarterback situations to sort out though, and that influences decisions on preseason lineups. Here are the key quarterback situations to look for in the preseason's second week:
Caleb Williams/Ben Johnson era debuts
We didn't get to see Williams in the Bears' preseason opener. Johnson decided to sit most of his starters. But Johnson said the starters including Williams will play on Sunday night. And plenty of viewers to the Fox broadcast will want to see it.
Johnson was supposed to fix all that was wrong with Williams from last season, and he might, but the reports from Bears camp have been lukewarm at best. There have been plenty of mistakes by the offense, and Williams has been up and down. Camp reports, or even the results of preseason games, can be misleading. Johnson, who was hired by the Bears this offseason after tremendous seasons as the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator, is a respected offensive mind. Williams, the top pick of last year's draft, has obvious talent. But if Williams struggles on Sunday night in prime time, there will be some concern.
Cam Ward, take 2
The No. 1 overall pick of the NFL Draft has been overshadowed practically since the end of the college season, but he's still the rookie who is most likely to have the biggest impact on this season. Ward played two series in the Tennessee Titans' opener, and that's the plan for the second game too, coach Brian Callahan said.
Ward played well last week. remaining focused for his second series even though the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had more than 14 minutes of possession in the first quarter. Ward completed 5-of-8 passes for 67 yards. Every rep he can get before the season is valuable, especially considering his first regular-season game is a very tough test against a strong Denver Broncos defense.
Browns QB dilemma
Shedeur Sanders' injury will keep him out of this week's preseason game, and makes a weird Browns quarterback situation even tougher to figure out. The only thing that seems firm is that Joe Flacco will start Week 1, even if coach Kevin Stefanski is being coy about his decision. Flacco seems unlikely to play this preseason. Beyond Flacco, it's a mystery. Kenny Pickett seems to be second in line, but he missed most of camp and the first preseason game with a hamstring injury. Pickett is back to practicing on a limited basis but is not expected to play Saturday. That means a big opportunity for rookie Dillon Gabriel, the third-round pick who has been entirely overshadowed by Sanders. He seems likely to get the start and perhaps play into the second half, as Sanders did last week.
It has appeared this week that Pickett and Gabriel have remained ahead of Sanders on the depth chart even after Sanders played well last week. Pickett could either solidify his spot or lose some ground depending on his performance Saturday. It seems now like the Browns will keep four quarterbacks, but perhaps that can change too. The Browns have two more preseason games to figure it all out.
Jaxson Dart makes a move
Dart, the Giants' first-round rookie quarterback, is unlikely to start in Week 1 or even in September. But if he keeps playing really well in the preseason, he could make the decision a lot tougher on the Giants.
Dart looked good last week at Buffalo, and this week he gets to play at MetLife Stadium against the Jets. If Dart plays as well in front of Giants fans as he did last week, the speculation that he could be the QB1 for the season opener will increase. That possibility makes Jets-Giants one of the more intriguing games of the week.
"I can't wait," Dart said, via the team's site. "It's going to be a lot of fun. I hope that the fans come out, and they're super passionate."
Colts keep evaluating Daniel Jones, Anthony Richardson
Jones will start Saturday afternoon's preseason game against the Green Bay Packers, but it will probably be much more important for Richardson. Jones will start but Richardson will get the majority of the work, Indianapolis Colts coach Shane Steichen told Kay Adams on the "Up and Adams" show. Richardson's start last week didn't go well, with him missing a read that led to a sack, which resulted in a dislocated right pinkie finger. The competition revolves around Richardson. If he plays well, the Colts would be happy to give him the job. If he doesn't, it might go to Jones by default. He is under a lot of pressure to play well this week in what should be extended action.
Saints close to picking QB1
Saints coach Kellen Moore said "we're close" to picking a starting quarterback for Week 1 when asked on the "Up and Adams" show. He also said all three quarterbacks — Spencer Rattler, rookie Tyler Shough and Jake Haener — will play against the Jaguars and how they fare will "be a big part" in choosing a regular season starter. It seems like it's a two-man race between Rattler and Shough. Rattler got the start last week but Shough outplayed him. Shough, the team's second-round pick, is probably the better player but Rattler has experience. It's one of the truly unsettled quarterback competitions in the NFL, and a big part of the competition will play out Sunday afternoon on NFL Network.

Browns sign rookie wide receiver Isaiah Bond after sexual assault case is dropped
Undrafted rookie wide receiver Isaiah Bond signed with the Cleveland Browns on Monday, less than a week after a sexual assault case against him was dropped. Bond ran a 4.39 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine — the ninth-fastest time among wide receivers — and was projected to be drafted in the middle rounds before he was accused of sexual assault and surrendered on April 10 in Frisco, Texas. A Collins County, Texas, grand jury determined Thursday that there was not enough evidence to indict Bond and dismissed the case. The Browns hosted Bond as one of their 30 predraft visits. Cleveland offensive coordinator Tommy Rees coached at Alabama the two seasons Bond was there, which also weighed into the decision. Cleveland general manager Andrew Berry said in a statement that the organization spent the past four months doing 'extensive research that includes but is not limited to hearing from both sides of the case and receiving the results of an independently administered polygraph test. 'Before the allegations, we also spent a great deal of time with Isaiah during the draft process on campus, at the Combine and at our facilities. His time at Alabama with Tommy Rees also weighed heavily on our assessment of his ability to operate successfully in a professional environment if brought into our organization. It is these touchpoints and more that gave us the necessary insights to make this decision.' Bond spent last season at Texas. He appeared in 41 games in college and had 99 receptions for 1,428 yards and 10 touchdowns. To make room for Bond, Cleveland waived long snapper Brent Matiscik. Unsigned second-round pick Quinshon Judkins also had a domestic violence case against him dropped Thursday in Florida, but there was no word on when the running back might possibly be signed. The Browns conclude the preseason on Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams. Even though there are only a couple of weeks until the Sept. 7 opener against Cincinnati, coach Kevin Stefanski said Sunday he thinks both Bond and Judkins — or any player added to the roster this week — can make up for lost time. 'That happens during the season, can happen in training camp where you got, you have to get players up to speed quickly,' Stefanski said. "That happens sometimes you get a guy on a Wednesday and they have to play on a Sunday. So that's part of our job as coaches, is to get them ready to roll.' ___ AP NFL:

Lions injury updates on August 18 including Dan Campbell press conference analysis
With training camp and preseason are winding down, let's take a look at when we can expect injured Lions to return. I've organized these players based on anticipated month of return. There were a lot of injury updates today during Dan Campbell's press conference. His quotes are included below. AUGUST ESTIMATED RETURN Kerby Joseph - left knee (July) "We're hoping to get him back late in the week. We don't feel like it's a major problem." Joseph was out with an unspecified knee issue early in camp. He was able to return temporarily, but apparently has been bothered by it over the past week. This may be something to keep an eye on going forward. Sam LaPorta - unspecified (August 13) Dan Campbell previously stated that this injury is minor. No concern here. Khalil Dorsey - tib/fib fracture (December 15, 2024) "We'll start today individual group... hopefully by the end of the week we'll get him worked in a few things." Dorsey started on PUP but is coming off the list today which is in-line with expectations for his injury. The Lions could have played the roster management game by keeping him on PUP to free up a 53-man spot, but must feel like he is valuable and ready to contribute soon. Tim Patrick - hamstring This injury seems minor given his enthusiastic joyful celebrations seen in recent practice videos. There is no rush with Isaac TeSlaa's emergence. _______________________________________ SEPTEMBER ESTIMATED RETURN Morice Norris - concussion with seizure (August 8) "TBD right now. We're being very doing well right now." The good news is that all signs suggest there is no spinal cord injury or concern. The seizure was disturbing to witness but is unlikely to cause recurrent seizure problems (epilepsy). The data isn't entirely definitive, but a seizure in the immediate seconds after a concussion seems unlikely to result in epilepsy based on multiple studies - including this one on 22 rugby players, none of whom developed epilepsy. Interestingly, all 22 of those rugby players returned to play within 2 weeks, although this was prior to year 2000 when return-to-play guidelines had a much shorter timeframe. If Norris has any more seizures within these first few weeks, that would be more concerning for the development of chronic, post-traumatic epilepsy. Dan Campbell stated that they were planning a reevaluation in about two weeks from the injury date which would be anytime now. If all goes well, he may start individual drills and then no-contact practicing soon, but don't expect any game availability for multiple weeks. The fact that Norris has not been put on IR yet is a very positive sign for his health. I would not expect him to make the 53-man roster, but he could be a candidate to stick on the practice squad throughout the season. For the sake of his health, staying safe on the practice squad for at least a couple months would probably be a good idea to make sure no further seizure activity occurs. Mekhi Wingo - right knee meniscus (November 28, 2024) The meniscus is suspected to have been repaired which carries a longer recovery than a simple trim. Even still, this is turning into a long recovery timeline even for a repair. There hasn't been any detail about his injury or his surgery. Wingo is on PUP and likely stays on it into the season. Josh Paschal - unspecified cleanup surgery Paschal is on NFI (non football injury) list which suggests he may have been injured on personal time. Trystan Colon - right elbow (August 8) This injury didn't look overly concerning on video but is keeping him out for a little while. He has not been placed on IR which means the Lions are hoping he's back this season. _________________________ OCTOBER ESTIMATED RETURN Ahmed Hassanein - right pectoral (August 16) "Going to be down for a while, he's got a pec." I'm putting Hassanein in the October category optimistically. Campbell today provided the first confirmation of the pec suspicion seen on video. Reading between the lines suggests that the pec is not a full rupture requiring surgery, but I can't say this for sure. If he does require surgery, it's likely at least a 4-month recovery which would mean a mid-December return or a season-ender. For comparison, CJ Gardner-Johnson in 2023 with the Lions returned in 16 weeks from pec rupture surgery. Defensive line is a more upper-body demanding position than the secondary so the recovery could be longer. If this is a partial tear (aka strain), then he could be back within a few weeks depending on the severity and the location of the tear (muscle belly vs tendon). Last year, Frank Ragnow returned in 3 weeks from a pec strain, missing just one game plus the bye. Miles Frazier - knee It's unknown when this unspecified knee injury occurred. Dan Campbell previously offered a September to October return timeline. He is currently on PUP and almost certainly stays on PUP into the season. Malcolm Rodriguez - ACL (November 28, 2024) On PUP and will very likely stay on it into the season. All signs suggest recovery is going well. _________________________________________ NOVEMBER ESTIMATED RETURN Alim McNeill - ACL (December 15, 2024) On PUP and will almost certainly stay on it into the season. ________________________________________ INJURED RESERVE (OUT FOR YEAR) Of these players, the biggest losses are Onwuzurike and Rakestraw who were both definitely making the 53-man roster. Yeboah also had a good chance to make the roster as tight end #3, because he was given $482k guaranteed for this season as a free agent. _________________________ RETURNED TO ACTION

How old is Joe Flacco? Where QB ranks among NFL's oldest players
The Cleveland Browns named Joe Flacco their starting quarterback to begin the 2025 NFL season. The 18-year veteran will provide the Browns with a wealth of experience as he takes on the job. Flacco has been in the league since the Baltimore Ravens made him the 18th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. He has played in 196 career regular-season games with 191 starts over that span, posting a 105-86 record over that span. Flacco led the Ravens to a Super Bowl 47 victory, a contest for which he earned MVP honors. He has completed 61.7% of his passes for 45,697 yards, 257 touchdowns and 162 interceptions across his 17 NFL seasons to date. Just how old is Joe Flacco? Here's what to know about the veteran signal-caller's age and where he ranks among the league's oldest players. How old is Joe Flacco? Joe Flacco is 40 years old. The 2025 NFL season will be his 18th, and he has played with the Ravens, Denver Broncos, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts and Browns during his career. JOE FLACCO: QB's first Browns stint, revisited Oldest NFL players for 2025 Flacco is one of just three active NFL players over the age of 40. Only Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (41) and New York Jets kicker Nick Folk (40) are older than him. Below is a look at the 10 oldest NFL players for the 2025 NFL season. Rodgers and Flacco will become the first pair of 40-year-old quarterbacks to start in the same season since Tom Brady and Drew Brees did so in 2020, when Brady was 43 and Brees was 41. The 2025 NFL season will be just the eighth in league history during which multiple quarterbacks aged 40 or older have started at least one game.
