Lions rookie Ahmed Hassanein says he'll be back, hungrier than ever after pec injury

USA Today2 days ago
Lions rookie defensive end Ahmed Hassanein took to Instagram to share the good news that he does not need surgery on his injured pectoral muscle, which he suffered during Saturday's preseason game against the Miami Dolphins.
"God is good, I'm blessed," Hassanein wrote on his Instagram story. "I want to thank everybody that asked about me. I'm so grateful and blessed no surgery is needed, just time to heal. God is good all the time. I may not understand but I truly trust the Lord timing and in everything. I will be back. Hungrier than I've ever been. All glory to Jesus in everything." Hassanein also added three Bible verses to the post.
Head coach Dan Campbell said Monday the Boise State product will be out "for a while" and there is concern he will miss the entire season, saying it's to be determined.
Hassanein was showing flashes throughout the preseason and likely would have had a special-teams role and serve as depth on the edge as a rookie while continuing to develop as a pass-rusher.
With Hassanein out, the Lions could be rolling a depth chart of Aidan Hutchinson, Marcus Davenport, Al-Quadin Muhammad, Keith Cooper and Nate Lynn.

Ilona Maher wants America to fall in love with rugby during Women's World Cup

SUNDERLAND, England — Ilona Maher's mission at the Women's Rugby World Cup is about more than just winning games. Heading into the United States' tournament opener, the world's most followed rugby player on social media wants to get more eyeballs on the sport as it ramps up attempts to crack the market in America. 'Not many people know that there's a Women's Rugby World Cup going on, so we try to get as many people as we can to spread that knowledge,' Maher said ahead of the match against host England in the World Cup curtain-raiser in Sunderland. 'We want the fans in America to see us play here because we've got a World Cup there in eight years and we need to start building for that.' Rugby authorities see America as a vital new market for the sport. The United States will stage the men's Rugby World Cup in 2031 and the women's tournament in 2033. The presence of Maher is key to attracting attention on rugby in the U.S., given she has 5.2 million followers on Instagram and 3.6 million on TikTok — platforms on which she promotes body positivity. The 29-year-old Vermont native believes she and her teammates are 'changing the game on and off the field a lot.' 'This is a time where women's rugby is in a state where it could grow massively,' she said, 'and I do believe this team is at the forefront with how we present ourselves and people's perception of us.' Maher certainly stands out, having been named as the best breakthrough athlete at the ESPYs. In an interview with the BBC ahead of the World Cup, she said she has been approached by the WWE — joking that her ring name would be 'Maher-vellous' if she ever became a wrestler — and that she'd love to get into acting. First, though, she wants to deliver at the World Cup, starting with the match in front of 40,000 spectators against England, the tournament favorite, in the north of the country. A star in rugby sevens, in which she won a bronze medal with the U.S. team at the Paris Olympics last year, Maher also had a three-month stint at English club Bristol in the 15 players-a-team format at the start of 2025. 'I think it's so cool,' Maher said, 'that we're up here, so far away from maybe where rugby union is big, and yet we're getting 40,000 people out to a game.' The Americans also will play Australia and Samoa in Pool A at the World Cup.

Tua Tagovailoa Potentially On The Move In 2026? One NFL Writer Says It's Possible

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. When Tua Tagovailoa inked a mega-extension in the summer of 2024, it was widely believed that the quarterback would be the face of the Dolphins franchise for years to come. That still should be the case, with Tagovailoa signed through 2028. Yet one NFL writer believes there is a scenario where 2025 could be Tua's final year in South Florida. Sports Illustrated's Connor Orr explored which veteran quarterbacks could be available in 2026, ranking them from Tier 0 ("Impossible Dreams") to Tier 4 ("Fliers"). Tagovailoa was listed alongside Kyler Murray in Tier 1 ("Blockbuster Candidates"). Orr described that duo as "quarterbacks under the age of 30 who are not technically available, but could be worth a phone call should they or their teams underperform in 2025." MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA - JULY 28: Tua Tagovailoa #1 of the Miami Dolphins practices at Baptist Health Training Complex on July 28, 2025 in Miami Gardens, Florida. MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA - JULY 28: Tua Tagovailoa #1 of the Miami Dolphins practices at Baptist Health Training Complex on July 28, 2025 in Miami Gardens, Orr recognized that the Dolphins would be hit with historic dead cap hits if they were to move on from Tagovailoa next offseason, he said the penalties would be tolerable if "the Dolphins were to continue the team's trend of trading expensive veterans and committing to a full youth-movement rebuild, including the quarterback position." Additionally, if the Dolphins were to get their next quarterback in the draft, the new QB would come with a comparably minuscule cap hit. Orr made the case that Tagovailoa -- when healthy -- has proven to be an effective NFL quarterback, so teams would be interested in adding him to the right situation. And "if the Dolphins are pivoting regime-wise, or at least toward a new personnel direction, it makes sense to entertain any and all offers." Tagovailoa has started all of his team's games just once (2023) in his five-year NFL career. That season also happened to be his lone Pro Bowl year, when he led the league with 4,624 passing yards while leading the Dolphins to an 11-6 record and a playoff berth. Tagovailoa and the Dolphins lost that postseason game on a frigid night in Kansas City, and they went a disappointing 8-9 last year, with Tagovailoa missing four games early in the year due to suffering his third diagnosed concussion. He also missed the final two games of the season due to a hip injury. Tagovailoa playing anywhere but Miami in 2026 remains a long shot. But if the 2025 season goes poorly and the team moves on from head coach Mike McDaniel and/or general manager Chris Grier, teams will surely come calling to check on the quarterback's availability. And depending on who's taking over, they just might be listening. More NFL: Aaron Jones Doesn't Hold Back About JJ McCarthy, Aaron Rodgers Comparison

Mariners pitcher shares vile message he received after poor performance

Seattle Mariners pitcher Tayler Saucedo revealed that he and his girlfriend received death threats on social media following his poor outing in the team's 11-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday. Saucedo, 32, entered in the bottom of the seventh inning with the Mariners trailing 3-2. He recorded only one out and allowed five runs on four hits, a walk and a hit batter. When he was removed, the Phillies had extended their lead to 8-2. After the game, Saucedo shared a vile Instagram message he received from a Mariners fan. "@saucey07 I hope your f------ head gets blown off to pieces walking in Philly you ugly autistic piece of s---," the Instagram user @gilbertgoonsquad wrote in a message Saucedo re-posted to his Instagram Stories. "Your c--- wife/gf dying too would be awesome as well." Saucedo also took to X to denounce the threats. "I understand wanting me gone after today and this year as a whole. Nobody is more disappointed with how this year has gone for me than myself. Trust me, I want to win just as much as all of you whether I'm here or not," Saucedo wrote. "But messaging me this bulls–t and my girlfriend and sending this stuff is beyond baseball. It's insane how comfortable people are sending this stuff to not only me but my partner. Tell me I suck all you want, that's fine, but at some point we gotta get a grip." Saucedo has struggled this season, posting a 5.14 ERA in seven innings. Last year, he had a 3.49 ERA across 38 2/3 innings. His girlfriend, Kelsie Scott, posted her own message on Instagram in support of Saucedo. "Friendly reminder that athletes are human beings and have real mental health. Absolutely disgusting what so many of you feel comfortable saying when you've never lived under the daily pressure that they do. This is never ok under any circumstance and I hope these words never find someone who can't handle them. I love you @saucey07," Scott wrote. Scott added that she and Saucedo received even more graphic messages than the one he posted. She said the harassment is "most likely" from gamblers. "We got messages far more graphic than the one he shared that I just don't find appropriate to share here. A lot of people have mentioned that those people are most likely gamblers, and you are 100% correct," Scott wrote. "Each vile message contained reasoning of losing money based on the game. All I can say is — maybe stop gambling money you don't have to lose." Scott continued by stressing that words from fans can cause real harm. "Hate has never been tolerated here in any capacity and it sure as hell won't be directed at anyone I love," she said.
