After Sikandar failure, is it time for Salman Khan to reinvent himself? Experts respond

Time of India27-04-2025

For decades,
Salman Khan
reigned as
Bollywood
's undisputed 'King of the Box Office,' delivering back-to-back blockbusters that set new benchmarks in Hindi cinema. Films like
Bajrangi Bhaijaan
, Sultan, and the Tiger franchise not only earned massive numbers but also solidified his status as a larger-than-life superstar with an army of devoted fans. However, with his latest outing, Sikandar, receiving a lukewarm response, it raises an inevitable question: Is it time for
Salman
to evolve with the changing dynamics of Indian cinema?
Historically, Salman's brand guaranteed packed theaters and record-breaking figures, sometimes soaring beyond Rs 500 crore globally. Yet, despite his enduring popularity, the recent pattern paints a different picture. Sikandar, despite immense pre-release buzz and a robust promotional campaign, failed to resonate with audiences once the first weekend excitement faded. Critics slammed the film for its lack of gripping storytelling, while even loyal fans seemed underwhelmed.
This trend isn't new. His previous films, including Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, also fell short of expectations, both critically and commercially. As film critics and trade analysts like Taran Adarsh and Komal Nahta pointed out, while Salman's star power can ignite an initial spark, longevity today demands much more - strong scripts, relatable characters, and stories that strike an emotional chord.
Bollywood itself is undergoing a massive transition. Content is no longer an afterthought; it is king. The new-age audience favors narratives that are rooted, compelling, and innovative. Films that rely solely on formulaic action and glamor, without emotional depth, increasingly find it difficult to survive. In this shifting environment, Salman's reliance on time-tested ideas, the invincible hero, over-the-top action, exaggerated romance, feels increasingly out of sync.
If Salman wishes to stay relevant and reclaim his box office dominance, he may need to rethink some long-standing beliefs. The formula that once worked wonders now risks becoming a cage. The audience is craving depth, vulnerability, and authentic storytelling. By embracing characters that reflect maturity and emotional complexity, Salman could not only tap into a broader demographic but also showcase a different side of his talent, one that even his fiercest critics would find hard to dismiss.
Salman Khan is scared of losing stardom
Manoj Desai, Executive Director of G7 Multiplex (Gaiety Galaxy) and
Maratha Mandir
Cinema, passionately defended Salman's latest efforts when speaking to ETimes.
"I always prefer using Maratha Mandir and Gaiety Galaxy to screen Salman Khan movies," he said. "People who thought it would be jittery didn't understand the essence. Honestly, it's the fault of our public. I would like to request everyone, come to theaters with enthusiasm. We are here to support you."
Desai emphasized that audiences need to evolve alongside the actor. "Sometimes you get emotion instead of action, and that too is an important attitude. Accept it! Salman made an emotional film, not the usual action-packed one, and audiences should watch it with an open mind."
When asked about Salman experimenting with OTT or gray/villainous roles, Desai remained optimistic. "Salman Khan is doing everything the public wants. He should continue choosing strong topics, the public will definitely watch."
On comparing Sikandar to Tiger 3, he said, "Tiger 3 was better, it had action and was gripping. Sikandar focused more on emotions, and sadly, the audience is still used to action. Still, Sikandar is a good film, and we must wait and see how the next films are received."
On what genre Salman should pursue, Desai said, "He should balance both action and emotion. If he does that, he will surely succeed."
However, trade analysts were more direct in their assessments. Komal Nahta didn't mince words. "He doesn't necessarily have to reinvent himself, but he must at least sign better scripts that resonate with audiences," Nahta said. "Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan and Sikandar were built on rotten scripts. Big budgets alone won't help, content is king."
He pointed to earlier successful choices like Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Sultan, urging Salman to revisit that phase of career decision-making. "He can keep doing what he loves, but the script must be rock solid."
Taran Adarsh echoed similar sentiments, analyzing where Sikandar went wrong. "On paper, Sikandar had everything, a top producer in Sajid Nadiadwala, a superstar in Salman Khan, and a proven director like A.R. Murugadoss. Yet it faltered because of poor writing, forgettable music, and a lack of gripping moments. Even Salman didn't seem fully in form."
Adarsh, however, believes reinvention doesn't necessarily mean abandoning what made Salman popular. Citing examples like
Shah Rukh Khan
's recent successes with
Pathaan
and Jawan, and
Amitabh Bachchan
's timeless evolution, he said, "Salman should take a break for 3-6 months, think carefully, and choose roles that combine action and emotion. His fans are still out there. They haven't abandoned him, they're just waiting for the right film."
Interestingly, both critics agreed that the 'brand' Salman Khan is far from finished. In Bollywood, one good film can change everything overnight. As Adarsh put it: "Never write off a 90s superstar."
In the end, the ball is firmly in Salman's court. Whether he chooses to recalibrate by blending high-energy entertainment with heartfelt storytelling, or continues with the tried-and-tested formula, will define the next chapter of his illustrious career. One thing remains clear - India's beloved 'Bhaijaan' still has the charisma and fan loyalty to script a spectacular comeback. The only missing piece is the right story.

Akshay Kumar beats Akshay Kumar : Housefull 5 overtakes Sky Force to become the 3rd biggest Hindi hit of 2025

Akshay Kumar's Housefull 5 has surpassed his own film, Sky Force, becoming the third highest-grossing Hindi film of 2025. The comedy caper earned Rs 119.75 crore in six days, exceeding Sky Force's Rs 112.75 crore total. This achievement highlights Kumar's box office dominance, with two successful films in different genres this year, despite a challenging market for Bollywood. In what can only be described as a box office face-off between Akshay Kumar and… Akshay Kumar himself, the superstar's latest release Housefull 5 has officially overtaken his own film Sky Force to become the third highest-grossing Hindi film of 2025 so far. The comic caper, part of one of Bollywood's most successful comedy franchises, has managed to rake in Rs 119.75 crore in just six days of its release, surpassing Sky Force, which concluded its run at ₹Rs 12.75 crore. This is a classic case of Akshay competing with himself, and winning both ways. Earlier this year, Sky Force, a patriotic action-drama, had opened to decent numbers and enjoyed a respectable three-week run at the box office. The film's Week 1 total stood at Rs 86.5 crore, with footfalls dipping in subsequent weeks. Despite solid weekend jumps, it eventually wrapped up at Rs 112.75 crore after four weeks. However, Housefull 5, directed by Tarun Mansukhani and backed by Sajid Nadiadwala, came in with a different energy altogether. With its slapstick comedy, an ensemble cast, and the goodwill of the franchise's earlier films, the movie opened to a robust Rs 24 crore on its first Friday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Confidence packed. Wrinkles left behind. Philips Garment Steamers Book Now Undo The collections soared over the weekend, peaking at Rs 32.5 crore on Sunday. Though the film saw a predictable Monday drop to Rs 13 crore with Tuesday it collecting Rs 11.25 crore and Wednesday it minted around Rs 8 crore as per early estimates by Sacnilk thus bringing its six-day total to an impressive Rs 119.75 crore. With this, Housefull 5 has now become the third biggest Hindi grosser of the year, trailing only behind Ajay Devgn's Raid 2, which has amassed over Rs 171 crore, and Vicky Kaushal's epic Chhaava, sitting comfortably at a record-breaking Rs 585.7 crore. What makes this feat particularly noteworthy is the fact that Akshay Kumar has managed to deliver three successful films in an otherwise challenging market for Bollywood. While many big-ticket films have underperformed, Kumar's dual successes — one in the patriotic action genre and another in massy comedy — reaffirm his box office pull. Industry experts believe Housefull 5 still has enough fuel left in its tank for another strong weekend. If the momentum sustains, it might cross the Rs 150 crore mark, though overtaking Raid 2 may be a steep climb. For now, it's celebration time for the Housefull team and for Akshay Kumar, who once again proves that in the game of box office numbers — no one beats Akshay better than Akshay himself .Housefull 5 boosts of a huge ensemble cast of Ritiesh Deshmukh, Abhishek A Bachchan, Fardeen Khan , Sonam Bajwa , Nargis Fakhri , Jacqueline Fernandez , Chunky Pandey, Dino Morea and Johnny Lever.

After Rana Daggubati, Kajol slams paparazzi culture as ‘disrespectful' and intrusive

Bollywood actor Kajol has slammed paparazzi culture as disrespectful and intrusive. In an interview with a portal, Kajol — star of the upcoming horror film Maa — took issue with being constantly tailed by photographers, and how it violates an actor's personal space. 'I am a little conscious with paps,' Kajol told Bollywood Hungama. 'I think there are certain places where they shouldn't be. Like I find it very strange when they run after actors at someone's funeral and ask for photos. I find that odd and a little disrespectful. I find it strange that you cannot even go for lunch.' In the past, several film celebrities (including Kajol) have expressed their annoyance with pap culture. A 'pap' or paparazzo is a photographer engaged to click pictures of celebrities, often milling outside airports, gyms and restaurants. While some are invited or handed 'tip-offs' by an actor's publicity team, there are also those who turn up unannounced or behave indecorously. Most recently, actor Rana Daggubati lost his cool after being pursued by photographers at the airport. A video went viral of Daggubati, a major Telugu star who features in the Hindi-Telugu web series Rana Naidu, accidentally dropping his phone after a stranger bumped into him. The actor, waving his hand in displeasure, looked annoyed at the snappers who continued filming him. Speaking about the airport incident, Daggubati later told India Today, 'I didn't call them (the photographers). I don't like it. I don't like them in my personal space, and I have been very vocal about it. They come outside my home, which I have respectfully told them [not to do]. And even at airports, they still turn up. I think it's pretty annoying.'

Sitaare Zameen Par director RS Prasanna fires back in remake debate: Adaptation is an art in itself

After the lukewarm reception of Laal Singh Chaddha, fans have been eagerly awaiting Aamir Khan's next movie. Now, with Sitaare Zameen Par set to hit theatres soon, the actor is making his much-anticipated return to the big screen. Amid speculation that the upcoming film is a Hindi adaptation of a Spanish original, director RS Prasanna addressed the topic of remakes in an interview with LiveMint. When asked about his views on remakes, Prasanna offered his perspective: 'As a director, I'm always looking for a story. Sometimes I write it myself, and sometimes I remake it myself. Kalyana Samayal Saadham is a story I wrote, and I adapted it into Hindi as Shubh Mangal Saavdhan—my own film. If there's an opportunity to tell a story again in another culture or in a different language where the original hasn't been seen, and if the material excites the director, then they naturally want to tell the story in a new format or context. Why did I adapt my Tamil film into Hindi? Because Kalyana was a very universal story that could transcend cultures. Since it was in Tamil, a lot of Tamil people saw it, but the Hindi audience didn't. It took us almost a year to rewrite and adapt it.' Last week, Aamir Khan defended doing remakes, citing films like Ghajini and Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. He said remakes offer a fresh canvas and he will continue doing them if the story excites him. 'It's my choice to do it. If you don't want to watch, that's your choice,' he added. After Aamir Khan's comments, Sitaare Zameen Par director RS Prasanna echoed similar sentiments during the conversation. He said, 'Adaptation is an art in itself.' 'To adapt a movie and do justice to it in a different language and culture, much of it gets lost in translation. You have to stay true to the spirit of the original while also changing things around and conceptualising it for the new culture. These are very interesting challenges for a director like me. I enjoy it. Telling a story is what's important. The source can be me, another writer, a book, a play... What matters to me is that it's a story I'm excited to take to the audience. That's what drives me,' he said. Without delving into the debate surrounding the film's origins, Prasanna shared, 'In this case, we got the opportunity to platform 10 neurodivergent actors—and many more. The thought behind it was so beautiful. We wanted to tell this story in theatres, where you could bring your whole family. That's what I want for Sitaare Zameen Par – to get people into theatres and give them a chance. It's a quintessential Aamir film, with its connection to Taare Zameen Par.' Whether an official adaptation or not, Sitaare Zameen Par aims to move beyond the neurotypical gaze. With ten neurodivergent actors, the film promises a nuanced and refreshing portrayal of individuals with autism and Down syndrome. Prasanna revealed that around 2,500 individuals with special needs auditioned for the Aamir Khan film. 'We auditioned around 2,500 people. What we were looking for was the spark of acting. We narrowed it down to about 100, from which we made our final picks. They underwent both acting and basketball workshops. It became like a community; everyone was living together. Their parents were always with them.' He also shared that the team brought in a specialised doctor to help communicate with the neurodivergent actors and better understand their needs throughout the process. 'They absolutely loved talking and performing,' Prasanna said, referring to Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishnan Varma, Vedant Sharmaa, Naman Misra, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Ashish Pendse, Samvit Desai, Simran Mangeshkar, and Aayush Bhansali, who are all making their acting debut with the film. Interestingly, none of them knew which film they were auditioning for. So, how did they react upon learning they had landed roles in an Aamir Khan film? 'We revealed it to them only after they were selected,' Prasanna shared. 'They went ecstatic!' The film also features Genelia D'Souza in the female lead role. Was she the first choice for the part? Director RS Prasanna revealed, 'It was actually Aamir who suggested her. We were discussing casting while I was outlining the character, and he said, 'What about Genelia?' I immediately jumped on the idea. Genelia is a fantastic actor. Recently, her reels were amazing, and I found a wonderful, positive energy in her—that was exactly what the film needed.' Sitaare Zameen Par is scheduled to release on 20 June.
