The actor-filmmaker spends hours in making sure he's up with the news. And not surprisingly, the filmography has undergone a dramatic change. So the list now includes films that marry commerce with stories about hot button issues and how they impact India, be it "Madras Cafe", "Parmanu", "The Diplomat" or his upcoming film "Tehran".
"It's important now to build a legacy around the kind of films I'm doing and to be known for them... Earlier, I didn't understand what the audience felt about me because we're insulated most of the times. But when I travel and meet people, they say, 'Oh, John we love The Diplomat. Oh, we love Madras Cafe.' That's when you realise you've slowly started creating a story for yourself," Abraham told PTI in an interview.
The conversation is peppered with talk about Donald Trump, tariffs, Palestine, Israel and Russia-Ukraine.
He wants his audiences to associate him with sensible cinema, the kind that inspired him to get into movies. He remembers the moment it happened when he watched Steven Spielberg's 1993 Holocaust drama "Schindler's List".
"I'm not lying, I was affected for days... And because that impacted me so much, I decided that when I become a producer, or when I get into films these are the kind of films I want to do," he said.
When he did enter showbiz, however, it was all about "Jism", he said, tongue firmly in cheek as he referred to his 2003 debut film, an erotic thriller.
"It was all about the body . And I didn't shy away from it. There's a huge audience that appreciates that. And I love it. But it was also very important for me to make a point. So 'Kabul Express', 'New York', 'Madras Cafe' and 'The Diplomat', these relevant films started coming in. But once I became a producer, I've gone full out."
Abraham's production house JA Entertainment began with "Vicky Donor" in 2012 for which it got the National Award. Then came "Madras Cafe", "Batla House" and "Attack" and several others, many of which he acted in too.
Through his films, he wants his audience to explore "how India's involved with the rest of the world". And that comes from his childhood where his father made him read editorials of newspapers every morning.
"Even today, I go to my office at 7 in the morning on a non-shooting day and for the first two hours, I only catch up with what's going on in the world. If you ask me about 'Tehran' and you say, why did you do this film, I can speak to you about the Iran-Israel conflict.
"I can speak to you about everything under the sun, not because it's an exam for me but because I love this space."
His father is a Syrian Christian from Kerala and mother is Irani-Zoroastrian.
Abraham said it is important to keep abreast of geopolitics because everything is connected.
"People say, 'what do we have to do with it? We only have to do with Pakistan'. That's not true. You need to understand what is happening in the geopolitics of the world to understand what is happening with India."
"Tehran", a Maddock Films production that will start streaming on ZEE5 from August 15, is a fictionalised account of a true event that unfolds against the simmering global tension between Israel and Iran. It draws inspiration from the 2012 bomb explosion near the Israeli Embassy in New Delhi.
Directed by Arun Gopalan, the film features Abraham as ACP Rajeev Kumar, who is pulled into a covert operation that spans continents, ideologies, and fractured alliances.
The actor said while the Iran-Israel conflict makes his film topical, it also made its big screen release impossible, which is why he and producer Dinesh Vijan took "an informed decision" to release the film on ZEE5.
Abraham said the Ministry of External Affairs saw the film and was "very kind and unbiased" and asked him to go ahead with the release of the movie.
He calls "Tehran", for which he learned the Persian and Hebrew, the first international film from India.
"You will see that a lot of Farsi is spoken in the film. My mother is Iranian. I learned the language for six months. There is a lot Hebrew in it so I also learned that," he said, giving the example of Ben Affleck's movie "Argo".
"Like that movie, when I enter Tehran, I won't speak in Hindi. That'll look stupid... Farsi is not an easy language to learn. But it's a beautiful language. It sounds so musical and beautiful."
The actor said the team worked with Iranian and Israeli actors to lend authenticity and one of the most beautiful moments saw them all sitting down for dinner and talking about life.
"It happened to me once before when I did 'Kabul Express' and I had the Afghani, the Pakistani and Indians all sitting together an enjoying a meal."
How did he manage to break out of his early eye-candy image?
"You can't break your image by doing 40 interviews and saying that I want to break that image. My work speaks for what I'm doing. When people talk to you, you understand what you're about from the way they speak with you."
All of this does not mean he will stop doing the fun movies like "Pathaan" and "Force 3", Abraham hastens to add.
"The day I announce 'Force 3', I know I'll have 'The Force' body... I hope that my commercial cinema, the hardcore commercial cinema I do, also makes a lot of sense."
There is a lot of talk about film universes these days. Is that something that interests him?
"No, because I am the centre of the universe," he said with a laugh and quickly explained, "If I believe that I'm the epicentre of whatever I'm doing, then I can create a conversation around me. I don't want to be the ripples, I want to be the epicentre."

New Delhi: Reiterating the demand for statehood and the Sixth Schedule for Ladakh as a three-day hunger strike is set to start in Kargil from Saturday, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk said on Friday that they are prepared to take their movement ahead, and can even march to Delhi again if required. In an interview with PTI ahead of the hunger strike under the banner of Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) on Saturday, Wangchuk said while statehood for Jammu and Kashmir is being talked about, Ladakh has been ignored. The Magsaysay Award-winner rued that the talks of Ladakh groups, which include members of the KDA and Leh Apex Body (LAB), with the home ministry is again stuck, as no date for the next meeting has been announced. "I am saying this with sadness. There have been lot of delays in the dialogue. In the last eight months, the conversation has been held only twice," Wangchuk told PTI. He said discussions on the main issues -- Sixth Schedule and statehood -- have not even started yet. Wangchuk said the delays have led to dissatisfaction brewing among people in Ladakh, and as the Dalai Lama is in Leh right now, it was decided that the protest will be held in Kargil. "The leaders said that there is the revered Dalai Lama in Ladakh right now. So, we should not do such a protest while he is present. There should not be instability. So, the leaders of Kargil are raising this issue," he said. Wangchuk said they're still hopeful that the government will understand their pain and address their demands, but added that they are ready to march to Delhi many more times if required. "We do not have any intention to come to Delhi again... But if this continues, if there is no democracy, we will have to take such steps," he said. "There can be a long hunger strike of five-six weeks... Even if we have to come from Leh to Delhi ten times, we will do that. The world should see how difficult it is to follow Gandhi's path," he said. "So it is possible that this time we come in September and reach Delhi on 2nd October again..." he said. Wangchuk stressed that the Sixth Schedule was an electoral promise of the BJP during the last elections of the Hill Council, and it should be fulfilled. He also said while the issue of giving statehood to Jammu and Kashmir is being talked about, Ladakh has been left out. "Statehood is the basis of democracy... When J-K and Ladakh were separated, both were democratic states, so both should get statehood," he said. "Everyone is talking about J-K. It is a good thing. I am hopeful that the government will also give them statehood. But we should also talk about Ladakh. "People of Ladakh have difficult lives living in a border area, yet they stand shoulder to shoulder with the Indian Army... There is no war in which the people of Ladakh have not played an important role," he said. "I think this is very short-sighted. Some leaders are doing this for the benefit of some companies with a narrow perspective. But it will cause a lot of damage to the country, which can unfortunately affect our security," he said. On the Sixth Schedule, he pointed out that more than 95 per cent of its population consists of tribals. While stating that infrastructure has improved in Ladakh since it was made into a Union Territory, he said locals, however, say that development is also there on the other side of India-China border, but without freedom, development is meaningless. "People say that there has been a lot of progress and development. By progress, I mean that roads have been built," he said. "On the other hand, people also say that how can people be happy only with money and development? Is there less development in China? There is a lot of development there too. But are the people of Tibet happy? No..." he said. "If people of Ladakh are kept out and Ladakh is developed, then it will be a cage made of gold," he said. Ladakh, which was separated from Jammu and Kashmir and carved out into a Union Territory in 2019 after abrogation of Article 370, has witnessed a series of protests over the last few years with demand for safeguards under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, and statehood being among the key demands.

New Delhi, Jul 8 (PTI) The Delhi Assembly on Friday passed the School Fee Regulation Bill, 2025, which gives veto power to parents in decisions regarding fee hikes, ensuring that school managements cannot unilaterally impose fee increases. Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood, in the Assembly, said, 'If even a single parent member disagrees, the proposal for fee hike will not be approved. They will have veto power, and the management cannot impose its decision unilaterally." According to the provisions of the Delhi School Education Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees Bill, 2025, schools found arbitrarily hiking fees could face penalties ranging from fines to losing their right to propose fee revisions in the future. The Bill lays out that if a school charges fees beyond the permitted limit, it must refund the excess amount within 20 working days. Failing to do so will invite escalating penalties — the fine doubled after 20 days, triple after 40 days, and will continue to increase with every 20-day delay. According to the Bill, a first-time violation will attract a fine between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 5 lakh. Repeat offences will lead to penalties ranging from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. Persistent violators may also be barred from holding official posts in the school management. The Revision Committee, as outlined in the Bill, will be headed by the Director of Education and will include an eminent educationist, a chartered accountant, the Controller of Accounts, representatives of schools and parents, and a former education official. Its decisions will be binding for a period of three years. The Bill further proposes that the District Committee will be chaired by the District Director of Education and include the zone's Deputy Director of Education, two principals nominated by the Directorate of Education (DoE), and two parent representatives also nominated by the DoE. Each private unaided school including those following Indian or foreign curricula, minority-run schools, and those allocated government land at concessional rates will be required to establish a School Level Fee Regulation Committee by July 15 of every academic year, under the bill. The Bill specifies that the school-level committee will be chaired by a management representative, with the principal as secretary. It will also include three teachers, five parents (selected by draw of lots), one nominee from the DoE, at least one member from SC/ST/OBC categories, and at least two women. The committee's tenure will be one academic year. According to the Bill, the list of committee members must be displayed within seven working days of its formation, and the committee must conduct its first general meeting before August 15. Parents cannot serve on the committee for more than two consecutive years and will be eligible for renomination only after a two-year gap. The Bill also mentions that while schools retain the autonomy to propose fee structures, it must be done within a prescribed framework. For the academic year 2025'�26, the fees already charged from April 1, 2025, will be considered the proposed fees. Appeals related to fee disputes can first be taken to the District Committee. If unresolved, the matter can be escalated to the Revision Committee, whose decisions will be final and binding, as stated in the Bill.
