Trump announces Indonesia ‘deal' after tariff threats

Daily Tribune6 days ago
TDT | Washington
US President Donald Trump said yesterday that he had struck a deal with Indonesia -- without providing specifics of the agreement -- a week after threatening steeper tariffs on the Southeast Asian country.
'Great deal, for everybody, just made with Indonesia,' Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, saying that he worked with the country's president directly. 'DETAILS TO FOLLOW!!!'
The Trump administration has been under pressure to finalize trade pacts after promising a flurry of deals, as countries have sought negotiations with Washington to avoid Trump's tariff threats.
But the US president has so far only unveiled deals with Britain and Vietnam, alongside an agreement to temporarily lower tit-fortat levies with China.
Lastweek, Trum prenewed his threat of a 32 percent levy on Indonesian goods, saying in a letter to the country's leadership that this level would take effect August 1. It remains unclear what Indonesia's new tariff level will be under the latest deal with Washington, Indonesia's former vice minister for foreign affairs Dino Patti Djalal told a Foreign Policy event Tuesday.
But he added that insiders from the Indonesian government indicated they were happy with the new deal, adding that he expected further information in the coming hours. Trump in April imposed a 10 percent tariff on almost all trading partners, while announcing plans to eventually hike this level for dozens of economies, including the European Union and Indonesia. But days before the steeper duties were due to take effect, he pushed the dead line back from July 9 to August 1.

Autism Camp Builds Belonging

TDT | Manama A children's summer programme supporting those on the autism spectrum is now entering its seventh year with a powerful new theme tying care to civic identity. Titled 'Our Nation and Our King Unite Us,' the initiative was launched by His Excellency Ali Abdulhussain Al Asfoor, Northern Governor, with backing from the Ministry of Social Development and the Bahrain Autistic Society. Values in action H.E. Al Asfoor praised the collaboration's role in delivering not only developmental support but also a message of belonging for children often excluded from mainstream narratives. He extended appreciation to H.E. Osama bin Ahmed Khalaf Al Asfoor, Minister of Social Development, for providing the institutional foundation that has allowed the programme to grow. The initiative combines educational, recreational, and therapeutic modules, helping enhance adaptive behaviour, reduce repetitive actions, and strengthen communication skills. Families lead change Parents have also been central to the programme's success. Their active participation, said the Governor, multiplies the programme's effectiveness and roots it in real community engagement. This year's theme reflects a broader national approach that integrates identity and inclusion, ensuring that all children feel part of Bahrain's social fabric. The Bahrain Autistic Society continues to play a vital role in advancing this model, ensuring that inclusive development is not just promised but practised.
