JAKARTA - A plane carrying hundreds of hajj pilgrims back from Saudi Arabia was diverted in Indonesia on Tuesday after an email bomb threat was sent to authorities, Indonesia's aviation body said.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation said it received a report from Indonesia's airport operator "regarding a bomb threat sent by an unidentified person via electronic mail".
The email at 07:30 am (0030 GMT) contained a threat to "blow up" Saudia Airlines flight SV 5276 which was flying from the Saudi city of Jeddah to the Indonesian capital Jakarta, it said in a statement. After 10:00 am the pilot diverted the plane from its destination of Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to Kualanamu International Airport in Medan, a city on Sumatra island in western Indonesia.
The flight was carrying 442 hajj pilgrims, including 207 men and 235 women, it added.
"Upon identifying security and safety threats, the pilot decided to divert the landing to the nearest airport," said InJourney Airports, Indonesia's airport operator.
A transport ministry official told AFP the plane was still in Medan and Flightradar24 showed the plane there.
The airport evacuated the pilgrims and a bomb disposal unit swept the plane for explosive devices, the aviation body said in its statement. - AFP

Florida executes man for 1982 murder by lethal injection
Published on: Wednesday, August 20, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 20, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: Kayle Bates received the death penalty in 1983 for killing Janet Renee White. The 24-year-old victim was abducted from her Lynn Haven insurance office. MIAMI: A 67-year-old man convicted of a 1982 murder was executed by lethal injection in Florida on Tuesday. Kayle Bates received the death penalty in 1983 for killing Janet Renee White. The 24-year-old victim was abducted from her Lynn Haven insurance office. Advertisement White was stabbed to death in nearby woods after returning from lunch. Officials confirmed the execution occurred at 6:17 pm at Florida State Prison. The United States has conducted 29 executions in 2025, marking the highest number since 2014. Lethal injection accounted for 24 of these executions nationwide. Two executions were carried out by firing squad this year. Three inmates died through nitrogen hypoxia, a controversial new method. This technique involves pumping nitrogen gas into a face mask until suffocation occurs. United Nations experts have condemned nitrogen gas as cruel and inhumane. Florida leads all states with 10 executions performed in 2025. The death penalty remains abolished in 23 American states currently. Three additional states maintain formal moratoriums on capital punishment. California, Oregon and Pennsylvania have halted executions through gubernatorial orders. Former President Donald Trump supports expanding capital punishment. He advocated for increased use of executions 'for the vilest crimes' upon taking office. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Six severed heads found on road in central Mexico
PUEBLA: Mexican authorities made a gruesome discovery on a road connecting Puebla and Tlaxcala states. Prosecutors confirmed the find of six severed heads on Tuesday. Drivers using the route first reported the human remains to officials. A local prosecutor's office announced an immediate investigation into the crime. The victims were all identified as male through preliminary examination. News outlets reported another severed head found in Colima on the same day. Additional human remains were discovered at the western city location. Local media revealed a pamphlet left at the Tlaxcala site blaming gang violence. The message pointed to a settling of scores between fuel theft gangs. Both Puebla and Tlaxcala states host gangs dealing in drugs and fuel. This extreme violence represents a new development for the central region. Decapitation crimes are more common in northern states and Pacific coast areas. Drug cartels operate extensively in those violent regions. Recent months have seen bodies appearing near the Puebla-Tlaxcala border area. The incident recalls similar gruesome discoveries across Mexico. Authorities found twenty bodies on a Sinaloa road on June 30, with five headless. March 2022 saw six heads placed on a car roof in Guerrero's Chilapa. Mexico has suffered approximately 480,000 drug-related deaths since 2006. Another 130,000 people remain missing nationwide. - AFP
