Sasaram: The mahant (head priest) of Shri Vijay Raghav Temple in Gandhi Nagar under Dehri town police station area, was allegedly murdered by one of his own associates on Friday.
According to police sources, Mahant Shyam Narayan Swami (60) was brutally attacked on the head with a brick by a fellow priest inside the temple premises.
The assault left him critically injured.
Other residents of the temple rushed to the spot upon hearing the commotion and immediately took the grievously injured mahant to Narayan Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
SDPO, Atulesh Jha, said the accused fled after the attack. "The identity of the accused has been established, and raids are being conducted at several suspected locations to arrest him," he said.

Maharashtra Dy CM Ajit Pawar directs police to stop cow vigilantes from harassing livestock transporters

Mumbai: Maharashtra deputy chief minister and NCP chief Ajit Pawar instructed the police authorities to stop self-proclaimed cow vigilantes from checking livestock vehicles and harassing transporters and those involved in the livestock business. Political observers said Pawar's decision might trigger a clash between Mahayuti partners, NCP and BJP, as he is backing the Qureshi community on transporting livestock, which may not go down well with BJP or some of its frontal organisations that are backing cow vigilantes. Pawar gave these instructions after a meeting with a delegation of the Qureshi community, where director general of police (DGP) Rashmi Shukla, Mumbai police commissioner (CP) Deven Bharti, and other officials were present. Officials said the deputy CM instructed Shukla to issue a circular to this effect. Ajit Pawar said that the district police should be given instructions through the circular that no private person has the right to inspect vehicles transporting animals. The Qureshi community also demanded a ban on illegal cow vigilantes, protection for legally permitted animal transport, withdrawal of false cases filed, and relaxation of restrictions on animal transport. "The Qureshi community is traditionally associated with the meat trade and is part of the agriculture-based economy of Maharashtra. No injustice will be allowed to be done to traders from this community and farmers who transport animals," DCM Pawar's office said in a statement. The delegation of the Qureshi community informed Ajit Pawar about the harassment by illegal cow vigilantes in a memorandum. "Many people have lost their lives due to violent acts by cow vigilantes against traders from the Qureshi community and farmers transporting legally permitted animals. This has forced the community to go on strike since June - the farmers are also facing difficulties as there are no buyers for their cattle. The ban on cow slaughter in 2015 also affected the transport of buffaloes, which is legally permitted," the memorandum stated. Mumbai cops arrest three businessmen in gold investment scam cheating investors of Rs 43 crore

Mumbai: The LT Marg police arrested three businessmen, including a chartered accountant who was arrested after he arrived from Dubai on Saturday, in connection with an alleged gold investment scam. They induced investors into investing in profit-making shares and engaged in dabba trading (illegal exchange), cheating them out of nearly Rs 44 crore. The three accused arrested are Ladulad Kanthare, 54, Pallav Kanthare, 27, and Anilkumar Jagetia. They are accused of duping a bullion firm in Zaveri Bazaar by luring them into investing gold and cash, later misappropriating the assets in illegal commodity and stock market trading. According to the police, the complainant and his family run PFive Bullions Pvt Ltd, a gold trading business in Zaveri Bazaar. In early 2023, the complainant's uncle, Anil Mehta, was introduced by chartered accountant Anil Kumar Jagetia to the accused — Ladulal Harakchand Kanther, 54, his son Pallav Ladulal Kanther, 27, and wanted accused Shubham Mahavir Kanther — who operated businesses under the names Maxis Bullion and Pallav Gold. Over the next year, from May 2023 to March 2024, the complainants invested 36.37 kg of gold and Rs 10.51 crore in cash into the accused's companies, with a total value of Rs 43.76 crore. When repayment was demanded, the accused claimed business losses due to fluctuations in gold prices. In a meeting mediated by acquaintances, the accused allegedly admitted to losing the gold and cash through MCX and dabba trading (illegal speculative trading) in India and COMEX dabba trading in Dubai. They signed an agreement to repay Rs 33.25 crore, issuing over 100 cheques, which later bounced. During interrogation, they implicated their associate, Anil Kumar Jagetia, alleging he diverted company funds into gambling trades. | Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
