Lok Sabha passes two tax Bills without debate; Rijiju issues ultimatum to Opposition
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced the Income-Tax (No 2) Bill and the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha when no Opposition member was present in the House. Most of the Opposition leaders had been detained while marching towards the headquarters of the Election Commission against the revision of the Bihar electoral rolls and alleged electoral malpractices.
After they returned, the Opposition members continued raising slogans in the Well of the House. Amid the din, the two taxation Bills were passed by voice vote.
Sports Bill passed
The Lok Sabha also passed the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025. These Bills were also introduced when the Opposition members were not present in the House. Two members spoke in support of the Bills. As the Opposition continued its protests later in the day, the Bills were passed by voice vote.
Earlier, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya, while taking up the two Bills for passage, said the government had made 'several attempts' to bring forward legislation on sports governance. 'In the coming days, when India is going to bid for the Olympics, it is important that our sports ecosystem is robust, transparent and accountable. This is a crucial step in that direction,' he said.
Against rules: Birla
When the House met in the morning, the Opposition members were on their feet, raising slogans and holding placards. Speaker Om Birla tried to run the Question Hour for about 10 minutes, but the Opposition members were relentless in their protests.
Mr. Birla then charged them of 'systematically disrupting' the proceedings of the House for 14 days. 'This is against the rules and regulations and against the democratic process. People elected you as their representatives to raise their issues and to fulfil their hopes and aspirations, but you are only protesting,' he said before the adjourning the House till 2 p.m.
Will pass important Bills: Rijiju
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju targeted the Congress-led Opposition for the repeated disruptions and asserted that the government would now proceed with the passage of important Bills in the Lok Sabha as well as the Rajya Sabha.
'Every day, we will not allow the country's and Parliament's time to be wasted on one issue. Therefore, we will pass important Bills,' Mr. Rijiju told reporters at a press conference in the Parliament complex.
The Minister said the government was keen to holding discussions on important Bills but repeated disruptions by the Opposition were leading to adjournments.
'You have raised an issue, do it for one day. What is the point in raising the same issue every day,' the Minister said.
Mr. Rijiju listed the Income Tax Bill, National Sports Governance Bill, Merchant Shipping Bill, the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, and the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill as priority for the government.

Fishermen want 42-year-long fight to end; seek govt. support for their livelihood and safety in Palk Bay for fishing
Appealing to the Union and Tamil Nadu governments to wholeheartedly work to support their livelihood, the fishermen from Rameswaram, with their families, observed a day-long fast on Independence Day in the coastal district. The families, some among them, recalled the ordeals they have been undergoing due to the arrest of their kith and kin by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel on charges of poaching. 'We are traditional fishermen from Tamil Nadu. We have been fishing along the Palk Bay from time immemorial. For the last 42 years due to various reasons, the fishermen are being arrested. We have no security at all. In our own country, we are treated like denizens. We wish the trauma ends with us and the next generation lives safe and secure,' said Jesu Raja, a fishermen leader. He said that the fishermen should be permitted to fish in Katchatheevu. 'We know, it has been given to the island nation long ago. The government, if it steps in sincerely, the issue can be sorted out in no time. Considering our livelihood, the Union government should impress its counterpart in Sri Lanka, he appealed. After the annual ban was lifted two months ago, the Sri Lankan Navy personnel, under the guise of poaching, had arrested 64 fishermen. The trawlers have also been impounded. Under the pretext of punishing repeat offenders, 24 fishermen were jailed for six months, one and two years under multiple charges. Hefty fines were also imposed. Under such circumstances, the fishermen had no other choice but to give up the profession and look out for alternatives, else spend the remaining days in poverty and debt for the rest of their lives. The members wore black badges and said that when the country celebrated its Independence, the fishermen in this region, were yet to get their freedom. As a mark of protest and to draw the attention of the governments, they announced the fast. The fishermen leaders said that the agitations would continue and in the next few days they would resort to rail roko agitation as well.

Sirsa's statement comes amid ongoing legal proceedings against Jagdish Tytler, who is accused of leading a mob during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots that resulted in the brutal killing and burning of three Sikh men. The case is currently being heard in a Delhi court, where a crucial piece of evidence — a sting operation video — was recently submitted. Senior Advocate H.S. Phoolka, representing the victims, stated in a previous hearing that the video, recorded in 2012, allegedly features Tytler boasting about having killed 100 Sikhs. The CD was reportedly handed over to the CBI by former Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) President Manjit Singh GK. The 1984 anti-Sikh riots, which happened after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, then prime minister, led to the deaths of over 3,000 Sikhs across the country. The worst violence had been reported in Delhi at that time. Tytler has long been in the eye of storm due to the case. Demands had been raised for accountability and justice from the Sikh community. Sirsa's strong reaction has underlined the emotional and political weight the 1984 riots continue to carry, especially for the Sikh community.
