ASEAN must boost security, digital resilience
In his opening remarks at the 29th ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) Council Meeting today, Mohamad emphasised that comprehensively addressing these issues is critical to safeguarding the well-being of ASEAN citizens, as well as ensuring regional security and prosperity.
'Countless ASEAN citizens have fallen victim to these deceptive schemes and have been trafficked to work as forced labour in scam centres. They have lost their freedom, their dignity, and their life savings. These widespread illegal online operations also have a detrimental impact on the economies of ASEAN member states.
'In recent years, ASEAN has stepped up efforts to curtail the threat of cybercrime. Nevertheless, the crime syndicates have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to relocate or rebuild their operations,' he said at the meeting held in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) here.
According to Mohamad, ASEAN is navigating an increasingly complex regional and global landscape, shaped by intensifying geopolitical competition, economic uncertainty, and transnational challenges that underscore the fragility of the current world order.
He said that the rapid advancement of technology and the expanding domain of cyberspace not only necessitate the safeguarding of the region's digital ecosystem and networks but also require that their resilience be fortified against emerging threats.
Meanwhile, Mohamad noted that the APSC Council is currently conducting its end-term review of progress made under the APSC Blueprint 2025, with the insights gained expected to shape the development of the APSC Strategic Plan 2045, which ASEAN leaders are anticipated to adopt tomorrow as part of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045.
'Since our last APSC Council Meeting in Vientiane in October 2024, we have witnessed tangible progress across the work of the APSC sectoral bodies. These efforts have continued to contribute meaningfully to ASEAN's community-building objectives and regional integration.
'The APSC Council Report before us today reflects the breadth and depth of our collective endeavours,' he said.
He explained that the APSC Strategic Plan 2045 will serve as a vital compass for ASEAN's political-security cooperation over the next two decades, firmly anchored in the values of peace, resilience, and people-centred growth.
Mohamad Hasan also emphasised that the region stands at a critical juncture as ASEAN approaches the conclusion of the APSC Blueprint 2025.
The 46th ASEAN Summit and its related meetings, held under Malaysia's 2025 Chairmanship theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', are expected to address a wide range of pressing regional and international issues, including political and security matters.
This year marks Malaysia's fifth time chairing the regional bloc, having previously held the ASEAN chairmanship in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015.
In conjunction with the summit, two pivotal high-level engagements, namely the 2nd ASEAN-GCC Summit and the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit, will also be convened, serving as strategic platforms to advance regional and inter-regional cooperation.

UMNO deputy president Mohamad Hasan has joined party colleagues in backing Youth Chief Dr Akmal Saleh's firm stance against the Kepala Batas businessman who flew the Jalur Gemilang upside down. Earlier, UMNO Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi had already come to Akmal's defence, lauding his patriotism for protesting at the Penang hardware store. Yesterday, Mohamad cautioned against making Akmal the sole target of enforcement, stressing that the law must apply fairly to all. He also warned that mocking national symbols could stir public anger. Defending Akmal's rally as a peaceful one despite provocation, Mohamad took the chance to remind the DAP and its youth wing, DAPSY, to act with rationality. DAPSY had urged Pakatan Harapan leaders to cut ties with Akmal after the rally, a call to which the UMNO Youth chief retorted that such a move would effectively mean severing ties with UMNO itself. He dismissed criticism that Akmal's actions were 'political gangsterism,' stressing the gathering was peaceful. Ceasefire, demining, and stopping online scams top Thailand-Cambodia border talks

Both parties also agreed to establish a special coordinating group (GC), a key outcome of the meeting, to enhance border communication and prevent armed escalation in disputed areas. "Both sides agreed in principle to establish a coordinating group to enhance communication at all levels, including between commanders, border liaison working groups, standing forces in the border areas, and operational units along the Cambodia-Thailand border, to resolve all issues peacefully and avoid clashes,' said a press statement issued by the Royal Cambodian Army on Saturday. The formation details and functions of the GC will be discussed in the upcoming RBC meeting in Phnom Penh within a month. Cambodia reaffirmed the importance of advancing humanitarian demining at the meeting, but progress depends on the full implementation of the ceasefire and a return to normalcy along the border. "As border demarcation is currently underway, demining can be considered in areas that are demarcated or in non-disputed areas, as agreed upon by the Joint Boundary Commissions (JBC) of the two countries. "Since the RBC does not have the mandate to make decisions on demining, this issue should be addressed at the upcoming GBC Meeting (Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee), which is scheduled to take place soon,' stated the statement. The RBC meeting also discussed the online scams that are affecting both countries, and Cambodia assured to take serious steps to stem the crime. "Cambodia has made significant efforts to combat these issues, working closely with Asean and other international partners, and has achieved tangible results. "Cambodia and Thailand have already cooperated in tackling online scams, and this issue can be further discussed at the upcoming GBC Meeting, as both countries are equally affected,' read the statement. SEREMBAN, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- Timor-Leste's permanent membership in ASEAN is now at the documentation stage, ahead of its official admission as a full member during the ASEAN Summit scheduled for October. 'At the upcoming ASEAN Summit in October, there will be a ceremony to welcome Timor-Leste as a permanent member of ASEAN. Right now, it is only at the documentation stage,' Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan told reporters today. 'Most of ASEAN's requirements have already been fulfilled by Timor-Leste. In February, Malaysia announced a contribution of US$200,000 to the ASEAN Secretariat's Timor-Leste Unit in Jakarta to help expedite the membership process.
