KIULU: Rural youths have been encouraged to master the English language to capitalise on opportunities in the tourism sector as a platform for building future careers. State Tourism, Culture and Environment Assistant Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said the English language proficiency is an important skill to help rural students thrive in the modern era, especially as community-based tourism gains popularity with more domestic and international visitors flocking to rural areas like Kiulu. 'This advantage can create job opportunities for local youth to become tour guides and interact personally with tourists while showcasing village life,' he said at the launch of the English Literacy Programme for Rural Students at SMK Tun Fuad Stephens on Monday. Joniston, who is also Sabah Tourism Board (STB) Chairman, pointed out Kiulu's growing potential as a summer camp destination for international students, making the English language communication increasingly valuable for the younger generation. The Kiulu Assemblyman noted that most companies now conduct official business in the English language, including writing emails, preparing contracts and handling important documents, while government agencies like the STB use the English language in daily communications, especially when dealing with international networks. He reminded students that the English language skills are typically listed as requirements in job applications, giving those with good English proficiency a competitive advantage in the job market. 'I strongly encourage Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) trainers and teachers to play active roles in this programme as their contributions can make a real difference in developing confident English language speakers in our rural schools,' Joniston added. The English Literacy Programme for Rural Students involves over 100 Form Three and Four students, funded by the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu (KKRC) and conducted by TESL trainers and teachers from Universiti Malaysia Sabah. KKRC President Datuk George Taitim Tulas said the club would continue supporting capacity-building programmes as part of community economic empowerment efforts, particularly in rural areas. SMK Tun Fuad Stephens senior assistant principal Ismail Haji Mat was also present. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? OBS to celebrate 40 years of leadership training
Published on: Friday, August 15, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 15, 2025 By: Lorena Binisol Text Size: Staff sailing event. Kota Kinabalu: Outward Bound Sabah (OBS), Malaysia's pioneering outdoor experiential learning centre, is celebrating its 40th anniversary next month with a public open day and a charity gala dinner. Chairman Dato' Seri Tengku Dr Zainal Adlin said it would honour four decades of personal development, leadership training, and international recognition. Founded in 1985, OBS Kinarut was the first centre in Malaysia, following the original Outward Bound school established in England. Located on a 100-acre coastal site in Kinarut, the centre offers direct access to the South China Sea, rivers, and tropical rainforest an ideal setting for immersive outdoor education. Tengku Adlin, the founding chairman and first warden of OBS Sabah, had been a guiding force since its beginning. He fondly recalled the visit of Prince Philip shortly after the school opened, a moment that highlighted OBS's global significance. 'Our philosophy has never changed. We remain committed to experiential learning that builds character, resilience, and leadership,' said Adlin. OBS now operates across Borneo, with centres in Sabah and Brunei, and another in Lumut, Perak. Its programmes have benefited thousands of individuals and corporate teams through activities such as kayaking, trekking, sailing, and team-building challenges. During the Covid-19 pandemic, OBS temporarily halted all physical activities. However, the centre has since resumed operations and is planning for the future. A small portion of the land is being considered for development into a five-star eco-resort, with plans to sub-lease rather than sell, the property to support long-term sustainability, Adlin said. To commemorate its 40th anniversary, OBS would host an Open Day for the public to explore its facilities and learn more about its programmes. 'We will also hold a Gala Charity Dinner, a fundraising event with the Chief Minister of Sabah as our patron. It will be a momentous occasion with several highlights during the evening,' Adlin added. As OBS celebrates this landmark year, it continues to uphold its motto: To Serve, To Strive, and Not to Yield, and remains committed to making a lasting impact on individuals and communities. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Saudi wealth fund sold its stakes in Meta, Shopify and PayPal in Q2
DUBAI: Saudi Arabia's almost $1 trillion sovereign wealth fund sold its stakes in several U.S.-listed companies — including Meta, Shopify and PayPal — in the second quarter, according to securities filings released yesterday. The Public Investment Fund also sold its stakes in Alibaba Group, Nu Holdings and FedEx, the 13F filings show, during a quarter in which US stock markets rebounded from an April drop tied to US tariff policies. The filings showed that PIF no longer held any shares in Meta, Shopify, PayPal, Alibaba, Nu Holdings and FedEx. Its previous filing showed that, at the end of March, the fund had 667,996 class A shares in Meta, 1.25 million class A shares in Shopify, 1.76 million shares in PayPal, 6.83 million shares class A shares in Nu Holdings, 1.61 million in Alibaba sponsored ADS, and 498,164 common shares in FedEx. PIF's total exposure to US equities, which include call options that give the state investor a right to buy an underlying asset at a specified price within a specific time period, was valued at $23.8 billion at the end of the second quarter, versus $25.5 billion at the end of the first quarter. Tasked with spearheading Saudi Arabia's economic diversification under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 plan, PIF has moved well beyond its early holdings in Saudi public equities and infrastructure. In recent years, the fund took high-profile stakes in global brands, such as Uber and Lucid Motors, while also backing sports ventures including LIV Golf and English soccer club Newcastle United. At home, it has poured billions into giga-projects such as NEOM, the futuristic city on the Red Sea, and sectors like tourism, logistics, and clean energy. — REUTERS
