BJP MLA Mahesh Landge calls for ‘Delhi pattern' for stray dog control in Maha
The apex court in its August 11 order has directed Delhi-NCR authorities to permanently relocate all stray dogs to shelters, citing an 'extremely grim' situation of dog bites causing rabies, especially among children. The SC has ordered the creation of shelters for 5,000 dogs within six to eight weeks and warned of strict action, including contempt, against any obstruction.
Following in the footsteps of the SC, Landge, in a letter to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday, has stressed that the stray dog problem in major cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Thane, Nashik, Aurangabad, Nagpur, Solapur and Kolhapur needs urgent intervention. He has written that many children, senior citizens, and common people have been injured and in some cases, even died, due to rabies.
Landge has requested that a state-level, toll-free helpline be launched specifically for complaints about dog bites. He has emphasised the need for special monitoring of key areas such as schools, anganwadis, parks, and gardens to ensure safety. Additionally, he has called for legal protection and training to officers and staff involved in managing the campaign against dog bites. The letter has advocated strict action against anyone obstructing the operations in place to protect the community.
'This is not just a sanitation issue; it is directly linked to the health and safety of citizens. Following the SC's approach in Delhi, Maharashtra must also act immediately. Citizen safety and public health must be the top priority, and I am confident that the chief minister (CM) will respond positively to this demand,' Landge said.
Apart from Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad too, has seen a sharp rise in the cases of dog bites with the number of such cases nearly tripling in the past eight years. According to Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) data, cases have increased from 10,533 in 2016-17 to 28,099 in 2024-25. The upward trend continues this year, with 11,350 cases reported till July 25, 2025.

Officials also noted measures for managing overcrowding, including releasing prisoners on parole, providing financial assistance for those who can be released by paying nominal fines, and ensuring no prisoner remains incarcerated after serving their sentence. Kohima: Nagaland Governor La Ganesan died on Friday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Chennai, a Raj Bhavan official said. He was 80. Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned Ganesan's demise, and remembered him as a devout nationalist who dedicated his life to service and nation-building. 1,254 infant, 45 maternal deaths in Koppal over three years
Koppal: Govt hospitals in Koppal district reported 1,253 newborn and 45 maternal deaths over the past three years, with one infant death occurring in a private hospital. Premature births and health complications were cited as causes. Health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao disclosed these figures in response to BJP MLC Hemalatha Nayak during question hour in the legislative council. The health minister stated that a total of 1,253 newborn deaths were reported, including 446 in 2022-23, 491 in 2023-24, and 317 in 2024-25. Except for one infant death at a private hospital in 2023-24, all cases occurred in govt hospitals in the district. Additionally, 45 maternal deaths were recorded between 2022-23 and 2024-25, attributed to various causes such as high blood pressure and bleeding during pregnancy. "These cases are an example of the state of the health sector in the district," criticised B Girishanand, district president of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV). "The number of deaths in private hospitals is not easily available. Therefore, only one infant death has been shown. In reality, it cannot be ruled out that at least half of such deaths might have occurred there," he alleged. Rao detailed actions taken against doctors in other districts of the state regarding maternal and infant deaths in govt hospitals. Show cause notices were issued to a total of 11 doctors from hospitals in Davanagere, Yadgir, Tumakuru, Shivamogga, and Bengaluru Rural districts, including four in Kalaburagi and two in Ramanagara. The health minister emphasised that there is a system for conducting impartial investigations into such incidents. "The state-level maternal mortality analysis committee analysed 530 incidents last year. Accordingly, the infant mortality rate in the state is decreasing, and according to the SRS report of 2022, the infant mortality rate came down from 19 to 14 per 1,000 live births," he explained. Despite the high number of deaths in Koppal district, "no medical institution or doctor has been identified and disciplinary action has been taken," stated the health minister. There is considerable discontent in the district regarding the high rates of maternal and child fatalities and the govt's lack of disciplinary measures.
