CM misses Niti Aayog meet; none to read his speech
Bengaluru:
Karnataka chief minister
Siddaramaiah
did not attend Niti Aayog meeting on Saturday – conspicuous in itself as it was meant for CMs – but took quick damage-control steps a day later, claiming it's not a "boycott" and had to give the meeting a miss due to "pre-rescheduled programmes" in his home district of Mysuru.
While Karnataka's dissent over alleged injustice by the Centre in resource sharing with states is well known, the CM did not say he chose to stay away from the meeting. The CMs from Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Himachal Pradesh, among others, were present.
The gaffe was more glaring since there was no representative from Karnataka at the meeting to read out Siddaramaiah's speech.
In an afterthought, the CMO released a statement in which Siddaramaiah acknowledged the importance of Niti Aayog meet and expressed inability to attend the event in person.
"Although I'm unable to attend this very important meeting in person, it is an honour to share my thoughts on the significant topic of 'India at 2047 and Karnataka's Role in Nation Building'," he said in the statement.
For the record, the CM attended a series of local events, including inauguration of Indira Canteens and Basava Jayanti, in Mysuru on Saturday.
CMO sources said Siddaramaiah "could not depute" anybody else since the Centre informed the state govts that the meet was for the CMs.

It is a normal practice that revenue minister Krishna Byregowda represents Siddaramaiah at GST Council meetings. Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan had initially deputed finance minister Bala Gopal, but pulled him back.
Economists and political parties have taken exception to the CM's absence. CM's economic advisor Basavaraj Rayareddi said, "The Niti Aayog meet is meant to be attended by CMs. But there is no hard-and-fast rule.
First, Siddaramaiah, being one of the senior-most CMs in the country and an expert in public finance, should have attended it. Second, he should have reached out to the Centre. This will be taken care of in the future.
"
Experts said progressive states like Karnataka should always be at the forefront of forums like Niti Aayog with valuable suggestions. "The Niti Aayog is the only forum where CMs get an opportunity to interact directly with the Prime Minister.
No state should miss it. The Centre should be constructive and ensure adequate time for CMs to air their views at the meet," said D Rajashekhar, director of Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC).
The CMO statement highlighted the state's initiatives in the green energy sector and establishing Karnataka as South Asia's Electric Vehicle capital in the next 1,000 days. He also highlighted the success of Karnataka model of universal basic income through the implementation of guarantee schemes.

Centre deliberately denying funds to T.N., says TNCC president
The Union Government is deliberately denying funds to Tamil Nadu, said K. Selvaperunthagai, president of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee here on Saturday. The Centre was acting in a partisan manner even in sanctioning disaster relief funds and all the funds are getting diverted to the BJP-ruled States. The Centre was resorting to the tactics of denying funds to opposition-ruled States and thereby diverting those funds to the BJP-ruled States, he said. Accusing the Centre of treating the non-BJP ruled States in a step-motherly manner, he said that be it GST or the ₹2,500 crore aid due to the State School Education Department, the Centre was acting with an intention. On Amit Shah taking part in Lord Muruga conference at Madurai, he wondered how is it different from the recent one that was conducted at Palani in Dindigul district and dubbed these tactics as cheap politics aimed at keeping people in constant fear. On the delimitation of Lok Sabha seats, he said that the BJP is reducing the constituencies in the South and increasing it in the North so that all the political decisions can be taken with the help of North Indian MPs.

"Primary Instigators Of Violence": Meitei Alliance Asks Centre To Scrap Ceasefire With Kuki Insurgents
Quick Read Summary is AI generated, newsroom reviewed. The Meitei Alliance urged the Centre to scrap the suspension of operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki insurgents, alleging their role in the Manipur violence. They claim these groups exploited the agreement for terrorism, extortion, and illegal activities. Imphal: A global umbrella body of civil society organisations of Manipur's Meitei community has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to scrap an agreement signed with insurgent groups of the Kuki tribes over allegations that they have been involved in the Manipur ethnic violence. The request by the Meitei Alliance comes amid speculation that a formal announcement on the status of the controversial suspension of operations (SoO) agreement in Manipur is expected to come. However, a meeting in neighbouring Assam's Guwahati on June 5 had no link with the SoO agreement in Manipur. The Manipur assembly unanimously passed a resolution asking the Centre to scrap the SoO agreement on February 29, 2024, the same day the deadline for extension of the SoO agreement ended. "These armed groups, which have been the primary instigators and escalators of violence in Manipur since May 3, 2023, have used the SoO as a cover to pursue a vested agenda," the Meitei Alliance said in a statement. "Since the initiation of the SoO agreement in 2008, these militant groups had exploited the arrangement as a shield for engaging in acts of terror... They committed repeated and blatant violations of the SoO ground rules, amounting to terrorism," the Meitei Alliance alleged. Some of these violations, the Meitei Alliance said, include extortions and illegal 'highway tax', recruitment of insurgents, and nexus with other insurgent groups in Myanmar and Manipur, among others. "These armed groups have been the primary instigators and escalators of violence in Manipur since May 3, 2023 and have used the SoO [agreement] as a cover to pursue a vested agenda, that directly or indirectly contributed to infiltration into Indian soil by large-scale illegal immigrants from Myanmar..." the Meitei Alliance said in the strongly worded statement. The Manipur Police for the first time confirmed in September 2024 the involvement of insurgents who are part of the SoO agreement in the ethnic violence. The police also, for the first time, confirmed the involvement of the Meitei insurgent group UNLF (P), which had signed a ceasefire agreement with the Centre and the state, in the ethnic violence. Three insurgents of the SoO agreement-signatory Kuki Liberation Army (KLA) and one from the United National Liberation Front (Pambei) were killed in a gunfight in Jiribam district in September 2024, the police had said. Under the SoO agreement, the insurgents are to stay at designated camps and their weapons kept in locked storage, to be monitored jointly with the authorities. Over 260 have been killed and nearly 50,000 have been internally displaced in the Manipur violence.

Will PM update his Canadian counterpart on India being third-largest economy: Congress takes dig at PM Modi
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (June 7, 2025), describing him as 'Swayam Udghoshit Vishwaguru', and asked whether during his meetings at the G7 Summit, he would update his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, on India being the third-largest economy. Mr. Carney had, while justifying his invite to India for the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, later this year, said some countries should be at the table for the discussions at the summit. 'On May 24th, 2025, while addressing the media following the NITI Aayog meeting chaired by the PM, the CEO of the NITI Aayog had dramatically announced that while he was speaking, India had crossed Japan to become the world's third-largest economy. Now the Canadian PM — a distinguished professional economist who has been the Governor of the Central Bank of Bank of Canada as well as of the Bank of England — says that India is the fifth largest economy in the world,' Mr. Ramesh said in a post on X. 'Perhaps, India's first SUV — Swayam Udghoshit Vishwaguru — can update his Canadian counterpart when the two meet in a few days,' Mr. Ramesh said. After inviting PM Modi to the G7 Summit, Mr. Carney said India is the fifth-largest economy and, effectively, the most populous country in the world and central to a number of supply chains and hence, it makes sense to invite the country to the summit. PM Modi received the invite for the G7 Summit on Friday (June 6, 2025) and has agreed to participate in it. He has attended the previous five G7 meetings too. India is not a member of the G7, which comprises the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, France, Germany and Japan.
