After Uproar From Fans, We Finally Have Answers As To Why Several Notable 'SNL' Alumni Skipped The Show's 50th Anniversary Celebrations

Buzz Feed19-02-2025
Fans were spoilt for choice when it came to star-spotting over the course of Saturday Night Live 's 50th anniversary celebrations last weekend.
From Friday's live concert to Sunday's celebratory special, stars in attendance included pretty much everyone who's ever been on SNL or hosted it since its very conception, including the likes of Robert De Niro, Kim Kardashian, Will Ferrell, Scarlett Johansson, Keke Palmer, Jimmy Fallon, Billy Crystal, David Letterman, Drew Barrymore, Meryl Streep, Seth Meyers, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bad Bunny, Chris Rock, Jon Hamm, Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, Paul McCartney, and Tom Hanks — just to name a few, literally.
But, despite the whole thing literally being like a game of spot the A-listers, some fans were still left saddened by the absence of several notable SNL alumni — including Bill Hader. And after viewers expressed their disappointment online, we finally have a few answers.
Nah, how are you going to celebrate SNL 50 weekend update without Stefon. That's a crime. Where tf is Bill Hader #SNL50 #SNL50thAnniversary pic.twitter.com/6sojdmPl2q

According to a new report from Variety, Bill — a fan-favorite cast member on the show from 2005 to 2013 — couldn't make it due to a 'longstanding scheduling conflict,' his representative said.
Meanwhile, the same report suggests that SNL icon Dana Carvey, who was a regular star on the sketch show from 1986 to 1993, couldn't make it because he had a 'bad flu' and was sadly too sick to celebrate in person.
Dana has not personally confirmed this, although he may likely address his absence during the next episode of his Fly on the Wall podcast with fellow SNL alum David Spade.
And finally, one of the other most notable absences of the special was that of Dan Aykroyd — who was a cast member on the show back when it started in 1975. Days before the weekend of SNL50 celebrations began, the Blues Brothers star marked the milestone on X, writing: 'Cracking a Head with pride at having been a co-founder of SNL along with everyone we were together with in those four years, five decades ago. This telecast is as historical as the next moon landing. Comedy stars of our age all gathered under the aegis of America's greatest living impresario, my boss Lorne Michaels. People it's friggin' Holy!!'
In light of this, many were surprised that he didn't show up for the big night. However, like Bill, Dan's rep told Variety that his absence was due to 'prior commitments.'

Legendary College Football Announcer Brent Musburger Lands New Job originally appeared on The Spun. Brent Musburger, the legendary college football announcer, has landed a new job for the 2025 season - part of it, anyway. The iconic college football announcer, who called ABC's Saturday Night Game of the Week for several years with Kirk Herbstreit, has since been calling Las Vegas Raiders games on the radio. But ahead of the 2025 college football and NFL seasons, Musburger has landed a new job. It's an impressive one. Musburger, 86, has landed a prominent NFL announcing role on the verge of the 2025 preseason, which gets underway on Thursday night with the Hall of Fame Game. Musburger will be joining NBC's booth for the Detroit Lions vs. Los Angeles Chargers Hall of Fame Game. The 2025 recipient of the Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award will first be honored on the air. He'll do a sideline interview with Maria Taylor before joining NBC announcers Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth in the broadcast booth for the entire second half of the game. Musburger is one of the most iconic voices in all of sports media. He's perhaps best known for his college football coverage, working alongside Kirk Herbstreit at ABC and ESPN. But he also has strong ties to the NFL. Musburger, an avid gambling fan, now lives in Las Vegas. He was the original host of CBS's NFL coverage and he's been on the call for several Super Bowl broadcasts, too. The iconic football announcer has also done strong work for the NBA and college basketball, too. It'll be fun to see him back in the broadcasting booth ahead of the 2025 NFL season. Seth Meyers Gets Karoline Leavitt to Roast Trump in Fake Press Conference

The NBC host asks about the Epstein files, funding cuts and more The Trump administration has had quite a few press briefings in recent weeks, but they haven't answered some of the biggest questions that Seth Meyers has. So, 'Late Night' had its own White House briefing on Tuesday night, in which the NBC host led press secretary Karoline Leavitt to roast her boss. It's a recurring bit on the late night show, in which Meyers pretends to be a member of the press and asks silly questions. The response comes in the form of previous clips of Leavitt, utilized as unexpected punchlines. Up first on Tuesday, Meyers tackled Republicans' recent funding cuts. 'Watson' Casts Robert Carlyle as Sherlock Holmes for Season 2 'Tariffs have thrown the economy into chaos. Billions in funding for Medicaid recipients is being cut, and now Republicans are shutting down Congress to avoid a vote on releasing the Epstein files,' Meyers said. 'Are you doing anything we can be excited about?' 'You don't need to take off your shoes anymore at the airport,' a clip of Leavitt responded. Meyers conceded that that was indeed a good thing, but then turned his attention to Epstein once more. The host questioned who Trump would throw under the bus for the Epstein files, to which a clip of Leavitt said Donald Trump Jr. 'Oh, right. Same name, it will work with the list,' Meyers joked. He then questioned what exactly Trump has sold on his website ('$9 billion worth of crap,' Leavitt responded), what makes toucans such cool birds ('One big beautiful bill'), and more, including quizzing her on music lyrics. The 'Late Night' team even imagined Leavitt's response to 'who really killed Jeffrey Epstein?' 'Hunter Biden,' a clip retorted. You can watch the full fake press conference in the video above. Pete Davidson Names The 'Humiliating' Tattoo He Totally Regrets

Pete Davidson got candid about the story behind a 'humiliating' tattoo that read, 'Jokes come and go, but swag is forever.' The 'Saturday Night Live' alum, in an appearance on 'Hot Ones,' told host Sean Evans that the ink was inspired by a conversation with Dave Chappelle after the comedian watched Davidson perform stand-up at the since-closed Knitting Factory in Brooklyn. 'Seeing him was like crazy, like 'what the fuck,'' said Davidson of Chappelle, who at the time was still on hiatus from performing himself. 'I got off stage, and he was like, 'I watched your whole set. It was really good.'' Davidson thanked Chappelle before asking him how he keeps 'coming up with new stuff' as a comedian, referring to it as a 'difficult' task at the time. 'And he goes, 'Jokes come and go, but swag is forever.' And guess who got that tattooed on his chest?' Davidson said. Davidson noted that while Chappelle was — and still is — his idol, he later covered it with the shark from 'Jaws' because he 'needed something huge to black it out.' 'I could have just told people he said that to me,' Davidson said of the tat, which was not attributed to Chappelle. 'When you see that, you think I thought of it. I didn't put, 'dash Chappelle' ... horrible.' Davidson brought up the ink when asked about his experience with his costly, yearslong process of removing hundreds of tattoos from his body. The former 'SNL' cast member told Variety back in April that he started the process — which is at least 30% complete and has cost him $200,000 — back in 2020, and it'll take him another 10 years before he removes the rest. Davidson, who has noted that he looks to keep two or three tattoos among the bunch, said he sees the process of removing most of his ink as part of his healing journey. 'I used to be a drug addict and I was a sad person, and I felt ugly and that I needed to be covered up,' he told Variety. 'So I'm just removing them and starting fresh, because that's what I think works best for me and for my brain.' Related...
