iGA launches eGovernment Excellence Award 2025 The Information and eGovernment Authority (iGA) has announced the opening of submissions for the 13th edition of the eGovernment Excellence Award, a national competition recognising digital innovation across public, private, and non-profit sectors.
Entries will be accepted from Wednesday until June 28 via the official award platform www.egovaward.bh. Participants are invited to showcase their best practices, platforms, applications, and ICT initiatives that advance digital transformation.
Diverse categories
This year's awards span multiple categories, including Best Website, Best Practice in eParticipation, Best Integrated eServices, and Best Applications for Smart Devices. Other honours include Best Project for Digital Transformation, Best Utilisation of Artificial Intelligence, and Best Work Environment for Digital Innovation.
A Citizen Award also invites individuals to submit creative digital ideas or initiatives that enhance eServices or improve access and usability for the public. Submissions must be new entries that did not win in the 2023 edition.
Focus on innovation
iGA officials noted that the awards reflect the Kingdom's commitment to fostering a culture of digital excellence and innovation.
The Best AI Utilisation category, for example, highlights how organisations use artificial intelligence to enhance operations.
Similarly, the Best Work Environment for Digital Innovation award celebrates policies and internal cultures that enable creative, future-ready solutions in institutions. Private sector entities and NGOs can compete in the Smart Devices App category, in support of the national initiative to streamline digital services across the MyGov, AlTajir, and Bahrain mobile applications.
A dedicated information session will be held soon for interested applicants, with the date and venue to be announced by the iGA. Participants are encouraged to review eligibility criteria and category requirements on the award site before submission.

Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific unveils deal to buy 14 Boeing jets

TDT | Hong Kong Hong Kong carrier Cathay Pacific said on Wednesday it would place a US$8.1 billion order for 14 Boeing jets, its first with the US aircraft maker for more than a decade. The airline said in a filing to the city's stock exchange it would "purchase 14 Boeing 777- 9 aircraft" and had "secured the right to acquire up to seven additional Boeing 777-9 aircraft". The new order expects the aircraft to be delivered by 2034, according to a separate filing. Cathay was one of the first buyers to commit to Boeing's 777X programme when it unveiled the purchase of 21 aircraft in 2013. Boeing said in a statement the new deal brought the order book of 777-9 aircraft -- "the world's largest twin-engine airplane" -- to 35. The jets, designed to reduce fuel use and emissions, would meet Cathay's growing global travel demand, it said. "Boeing certainly had a troubled period in the recent past, but we are very encouraged by the renewed focus that Boeing leadership has on engineering and production quality," Cathay's operations and service delivery officer Alex McGowan told a news conference. Cathay already has a fleet of more than 230 mostly passenger aircraft, consisting of Boeing and Airbus jets. It has agreed to buy more than 100 new aircraft, it said on Wednesday, adding that the new order has brought Cathay's total investment to $12.7 billion (HK$100 billion).

Businessman on Trial for Faking Brother's Death in $500,000 Insurance Scam

TDT | Manama A businessman appeared before the High Criminal Court accused of orchestrating a fake death scheme involving his brother to fraudulently claim a $500,000 life insurance payout. The man, who was reported dead, was later discovered to be alive and living abroad. The case revolves around a 44-year-old investor who had taken out a life insurance policy in April 2023, listing his wife as the beneficiary. Just four months later, the insurance company received a death notice from a broker, claiming the policyholder had died in an Asian country. A claim was submitted, and a civil court initially ruled in favour of the wife. However, when the insurance company requested supporting documents, inconsistencies began to emerge, eventually uncovering the alleged fraud.

Italy approves plans for world's longest suspension bridge

TDT | Italy approves plans for world's longest suspension bridge Rome, Italy Italy's government yesterday approved a controversial 13.5-billion-euro ($15.6-billion) project to build what would be the world's longest suspension bridge connecting the island of Sicily to the mainland. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's coalition hailed the state-funded project as an economic boost for the impoverished south of Italy -- only for critics to warn that it risks turning into a financial black hole. Italian politicians have for decades debated a bridge over the Strait of Messina, a narrow strip of water between the island of Sicily and the region of Calabria, at the toe of Italy's boot. But ministers say Wednesday's approval by a government committee, CIPESS, is the furthest the project has ever got. Advocates say the bridge, due for completion by 2032, is at the cutting edge of engineering, able to withstand high winds and earthquakes in a region that lies across two tectonic plates.
