TN seeks retention of in-service quota for super-specialty in Round 2

Chennai: Health Minister Ma Subramanian sought the intervention of Union health minister J P Nadda to ensure that all 50% of seats earmarked for in-service candidates under the state quota are retained and made available in Round 2 of state-level NEET super-specialty counselling. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The first round of counselling for admission to super-specialty courses such as cardiology, nephrology, neurology, urology, cardiac, and vascular surgery, conducted by the medical counselling committee under the directorate general of health services (DGHS), ended on May 27. As per the Supreme Court order, Tamil Nadu reserved 50% of seats in these courses in govt medical colleges of the state exclusively for govt doctors (in-service candidates). While only 30% of candidates took the seats allotted to them, more than 70% of the 215 seats were vacant, officials said. While the state does not have adequate candiates qualified to join the course, officials said the Centre must consider in-service candidates if and when they reduce percentile scores in the subsequent rounds. On May 29, the state selection committee formally requested DGHS to indicate the dates for the second round of counselling to allow the upgradation of seats for in-service candidates. "However, it has come to our notice that the process of surrendering the unfilled in-service seats to the All-India Quota is being considered, without conducting the mandatory second round of counselling at the state level. Such a move would effectively deprive our in-service candidates of their rightful opportunity to upgrade or participate in further counselling and would be contrary to the spirit and intent of the Supreme Court's order," Subramanian wrote. He urged Nadda's intervention to ensure that all 50% of seats earmarked for in-service candidates under the state quota are retained and made available in Round 2 of counselling.

Fresh round for 51k paramedical seats in Gujarat likely after NEET results are announced

Ahmedabad: The registration and PIN distribution process for admissions to more than 51,000 seats in nine paramedical courses, including BSc nursing, recently concluded in Gujarat. A total of 31,779 students purchased the PIN, out of which 30,851 completed the registration, and 25,939 completed document verification. With NEET 2025 results still pending, there's a strong possibility that the admission committee may reopen registrations to accommodate students who may not secure seats in NEET-based courses. Admissions to general nursing and midwifery (GNM), auxiliary nurse midwifery (ANM) programmes, and bachelor's degree courses like nursing, optometry, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, orthotics & prosthetics, audiology & speech-language pathology, and naturopathy & yogic sciences are granted based on Class 12 science results, excluding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) scores. Currently, there are 1,104 colleges across the state offering 51,331 seats in total. As NEET results are still awaited, many students uncertain about securing admissions to MBBS, BDS, ayurveda, or homeopathy courses may look to enter para-medical programmes. The initial registration window closed on June 11. However, if many NEET candidates look to shift to para-medical courses, a second registration round may be needed. Even if all current registered candidates are allotted seats, over 20,000 seats are expected to remain vacant. Despite this, several institutions have applied for approvals to open new nursing colleges. These, once approved, will add further seats to the admission pool before the final allotment process.

DU extends single girl child quota to PG courses from 2025

New Delhi: In a significant move aimed at promoting gender equity in higher education, Delhi University has extended its single girl child quota to postgraduate (PG) courses starting 2025-26 academic session, as per officials. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The policy was already in place for undergraduate (UG) admissions in the 2023-24 cycle. With this initiative, one supernumerary seat will be reserved in each PG programme for a woman candidate who is the only girl child in her family. DU officials described this step as a continuation of university's broader commitment to creating an inclusive academic environment. "With this new quota, DU hopes to foster an environment that values the contribution of girls, allowing them to advance their education without barriers. By offering this support, the university aims to make higher education more accessible and provide equal opportunities for all students," said a university official. The single girl child quota will be applicable across all 77 PG programmes offered by DU. Admissions to these courses are conducted through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET-PG), followed by the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS). The introduction of the single girl child quota is part of DU's sustained efforts to support diverse student groups. The university already has supernumerary quotas in place for several categories, including sports, persons with disabilities, children and widows of armed forces personnel and orphans. "DU is once again reaffirming its goal of ensuring equitable access to education for all segments of society," said the official. At the UG level, 764 students were admitted across 69 colleges in 2024. Additionally, 132 seats were allocated to orphans under a supernumerary quota introduced last year to support children affected by Covid.
