FROM A MISSING ROAD IN JAIPUR TO A NATIONAL CHALLENGEThe "Theek Karke Dikhao" campaign began on X, spearheaded by an Uttar Pradesh-based online activist, who goes by the pseudonym Khurpenchh and has a reputation for amplifying social issues.Whether it was civil service aspirants gaming the system during the Puja Khedkar controversy in July 2024, or rampant paper leaks in government exams, the activist-influencer, operating from the safety of anonymity, put it all on blast.On June 29, Khurpenchh says he received a request from a youth in Rajasthan, highlighting a missing road in a housing society approved by the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA). This sparked the activist's first post, calling out the issue and tagging Rajasthan minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore. He gave the MLA a virtual tour of the neglected constituency."It was Rathore's response," said Khurpenchh, "that made me start the Ye Theek Karke Dikhao nationwide campaign on June 30".CAMPAIGN SPARKS REALITY VS POTENTIAL TRENDFrom there on, the campaign exploded, with citizens across the heartland adopting the hashtag #yethikkarkedikhao to share images and videos of local civic issues, crater-like potholes, overflowing dustbins to landfills, dug-up pavements to caved in roads, and trash-filled lakes to filthy roads, the ones you imagine would smell putrid.The activist's inbox was soon flooded with hundreds of requests to highlight local campaigns. Then, people from several places started throwing the Theek Karke Dikhao challenge to the politicians and bureaucrats concerned.advertisement"It grew as a totally organic social media campaign," Khurpenchh, who has 1.4 lakh followers on X, tells India Today Digital.The campaign, initially sparked by the activist-influencer's posts, has snowballed into a nationwide campaign.

The call to action has resonated widely, spawning a parallel hashtag, #YeKarkeDikhao, from Honey Singh's hook that even the "Kanpuriya" activist-influencer approves of."This is our beloved Chapra. Jai Ho!," posted Chapra Jila, the Bihar-based cultural and news-focused handle with 44k followers on X.It posted an image of a city road with a water-filled crater, flanked by an overflowing, open drain – choked with plastic waste. Between the road and the drain, awkwardly placed under a transformer, in a pile of domestic kitchen waste, a group of pigs rummaging through it. Locals went about their day, undisturbed."Chhapra plays an important role in pig farming and its in-situ conservation. Such an initiative should be welcomed," Khurpenchh reacted by posting on X.

advertisementNETAS AND BABUS BEGIN TO RESPOND TO PUBLIC PRESSUREThe campaign is already showing results.Politicians and bureaucrats are beginning to respond to the public's call.An example came from Uttar Pradesh-based journalist Deepak Gupta, who posted on X: "Regional MLA @ashamaurya_bjp called me and assured me that the road issue will be resolved soon. Just as the Mahmudabad MLA is cooperating with the campaign, all public representatives should take note".Gupta had, on June 30, flagged a local road's deplorable state.The positive, constructive, and focused dialogue has encouraged leaders to engage.Rajasthan minister Rathore on July 2 was seen at Jaipur's Girdharipura Pumping Station."Inspected water drainage, sanitation, and disaster preparedness," he wrote on X, tagging along a video of a water-filled site to review flood-readiness.Khurpenchh says the response has enthused him. Tempest at sea: Nayara's sanctioned cargo quietly slips into new hands

Both vessels have faced sanctions related to the Russian oil trade. iStock Representative image One of the first cargoes shipped by Nayara Energy Ltd. after it was hit by EU sanctions has been transferred to another tanker at sea, evidence the Indian refiner is trying to keep exporting fuel. The Tempest Dream completed a ship-to-ship transfer on Thursday in the waters off Oman to move the gasoline shipment to Wu Tai, a larger tanker, according to a Bloomberg News review of ship-tracking data and satellite images. Tempest Dream then indicated that it would head back to Vadinar, Nayara's terminal in western India. The embattled refiner, which is 49%-owned by Russia's Rosneft PJSC, has found itself being shunned after it was sanctioned last month by the European Union. That's left it grappling with a lack of feedstock and has seen it cut run rates at its Vadinar refinery. Ship-to-ship transfers are a common tactic to mask the origins of cargoes, and may allow Nayara to keep exporting fuel. The waters off Oman are a popular place to do Dream was carrying more than 360,000 barrels of gasoline before the transfer on Tuesday, according to Vortexa. It's now sitting higher in the water, Bloomberg and Kpler data show, indicating that it's shed at least some of the fuel. The Wu Tai, which is used for floating storage, is now holding around 460,000 barrels, with room to take more. Fuel exports from Nayara that were already on water before the EU sanctioned the refiner on July 18 have also faced delays in finding takers. One cargo was diverted to China on Tuesday after finding a new buyer, four weeks after it was picked up from Vadinar. Tempest Dream, previously named Unite, was sanctioned by the UK for its involvement in the Russian oil trade, while Wu Tai was blacklisted by the UK and the EU for the same reason. Tempest Dream's owner is listed as Istanbul-based Tempest Maritime Services Trading on S&P's maritime database, while Wu Tai's owner is listed as Namas Maritime Inc., which is based in the Seychelles. The database did not provide contact numbers or email addresses for the email to Nayara seeking comment sent outside of business hours wasn't immediately answered.

The move comes as the likes of KKR & Co., Brookfield Asset Management Ltd. and GIC Pte are pumping in hundreds of millions of dollars to develop the country's roads, renewable energy projects Bloomberg India's $4.9 billion quasi-sovereign wealth fund is seeking to double its assets under management to $10 billion within the next 30 months, fueled by surging demand for urban infrastructure in the world's fastest-growing major economy. Mumbai-based National Investment & Infrastructure Fund, backed by the Indian government alongside global investors such as Temasek Holdings Pte, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and AustralianSuper Pty, is capitalising on a big funding gap in the sector, according to Vinod Giri, managing partner for its infrastructure fund. 'We are seeing significant amount of investment requirements — almost double of what we have been seeing over the last five to seven years, across subsectors,' said Giri, who heads NIIF's flagship infrastructure fund labelled the Master Fund. The move comes as the likes of KKR & Co., Brookfield Asset Management Ltd. and GIC Pte are pumping in hundreds of millions of dollars to develop the country's roads, renewable energy projects, telecom towers, warehouses and data centers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi faces pressure to upgrade India's inadequate infrastructure and match the country's aesthetics to its ambitions - or in his words, create 'several Singapores' in the nation. Yet long delays, bad contracts and high costs remain big challenges. Created with much fanfare in 2015 under Modi's administration, NIIF marks the country's first big attempt to develop a capital-raising structure on home soil even as many sovereign entities make direct investments in India. The fund also counts local investors among its backers. NIIF, which currently has assets across its four strategies of infrastructure, climate, private markets and growth equity — is now raising $4.5 billion across successor funds for infrastructure and private markets, Giri said, adding that the firm is seeking to close it in three years. Giri said NIIF anticipates most of its existing investors from the first fund to return to its second one for which it expects to mark the first close by early 2026. Funds typically start investing after raising a portion of the targeted corpus as part of the first close. For the second infrastructure fund, Giri expects a new set of investors from Australia, Japan, US, Europe and Korea. NIIF's recent successful stake sales are likely to support the fundraising attempts, Giri said. NIIF sold its renewable platform in February. It has also disposed three out of five of its road assets in June. The fund achieved a distribution to paid-in capital of 50% with its two exits, said Giri, adding that it means 'for every dollar that our investors have given us till now, we managed to return half of that back to them.'

The executive order, which said it aimed to 'substantially' increase the number of space launches in the United States, was described by an environmental group as 'reckless.'Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has talked up several space missions including sending humans to the Moon and Mars. The Moon and Mars missions are planned to get a ride on the massive Starship rocket of Musk's private firm SpaceX. However, Starship has had a series of setbacks, with its latest routine test ending in a fiery explosion in June. SpaceX dominates the global launch market, with its various-sized rockets blasting off more than 130 times last year – and that number looks set to rise after Trump's executive order. 'This reckless order puts people and wildlife at risk from private companies launching giant rockets that often explode and wreak devastation on surrounding areas,' the center's Jared Margolis said in a statement. Musk's dreams of colonizing Mars rely on the success of Starship, and SpaceX has been betting that its 'fail fast, learn fast' ethos will eventually pay off.
