Bhagwanpuria's mother Harjit Kaur, 52, and cousin Karanvir Singh, 29, were grievously injured after two motorcycle-borne assailants fired on their car outside their rented accommodation on Qadian Road in Batala.
While Karanvir was declared dead at the Batala Civil Hospital, Harjit Kaur was referred to a hospital in Amritsar, but she succumbed to the bullet injuries.
A police officer said on Saturday that efforts were on by multiple police teams to arrest the assailants and added that CCTV footage from nearby areas was being scanned.
Harjit Kaur, who hails from Bhagwanpur, had been living in Batala in a rented house for the past two years.
In an unverified social media post, Bhagwanpuria's rival gang claimed responsibility for the attack, indicating that Karanvir was the target.
Asked about the claim, police parried the question saying investigation was underway.
In March, Bhagwanpuria was detained by the Narcotics Control Bureau under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act and shifted from central jail in Bathinda to Assam's Silchar jail.
Bhagwanpuria was already in police custody for his role in the murder of singer Sidhu Moosewala on May 29, 2022.

While the accompanying adults of 12 kids submitted credible claim of parentage, six were suspected to be cases of child trafficking. These six kids and their accompanying adults were DNA tested on 23 July to ascertain if they shared any biological relation with the kids. Meanwhile, five of the 12 kids for whom their accompanying adults provided a parentage claim have been handed back to their parents. The parents of the rest of the kids are still submitting the documents and once they are verified the kids will be handed over to them. 'These people hail from far away states. They are taking time to bring documents, like birth certificates, to prove parentage,' said DCPO Rashmi. Forensic sciences laboratory (Kharar) director, Dr Rajnish, when asked about the time period in which the lab is supposed to produce the DNA reports, he said, 'We don't have any such guidelines. Rules regarding it haven't been framed yet.' Meanwhile, the children continue to be lodged at the children's home in Doraha, waiting for the reports to find out what the future holds for them. The Jeevanjyot 2.0 project draft reads, 'If DNA tests match, the child shall be restored to the family. The authorities shall issue a warning to the family to not indulge the child into begging. The DCPO shall provide counselling to the family to enrol the children in schools and about the ill effects of keeping the child on streets.' If parents still put kids to begging, the draft calls for the parents to be declared 'unfit guardians' and 'the child shall be sent to children home and the child shall be declared legally free for adoption.' And if the tests turn out negative, the child welfare committee will initiate legal action by filing an FIR under the BNS, Juvenile Justice Act, Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, or other relevant legislation against the adults found accompanying them. Additionally, the child's photos and details will be uploaded on the 'Track the Child' portal to trace their biological parents for rehabilitation. DC Himanshu Jain had on 21 July established a committee to ensure the seamless execution of DNA testing after the attempt at DNA testing failed on 21 July due to lack of clarity on guidelines. The committee comprises the district child protection officer, representatives from the police commissioner, and the civil surgeon, tasked with overseeing the DNA testing process under Project Jeevanjot 2.0 to combat child trafficking and exploitation.

Sond alleged that the scam had political links to Congress leaders during their regime. He claimed that a former minister's close aide secured a ₹1 crore tender in his son's name and carried out solar light works in 20 villages of Khanna block. 'In this very tender, misappropriation worth ₹24.52 lakh has been proven,' Sond said, releasing photographs of the contractor's family with the former minister to underline political patronage. The alleged fraud dates back to 2021, when officials 'bypassed' proper tendering, produced a few formal quotations and awarded the contract to the chosen firm. Subsequent checks revealed poor-quality lights that frequently malfunctioned, while in many locations poles were left without lights. The scam first came to light through whistleblower Santokh Singh Benipal, who obtained records under the RTI Act and complained to chief minister Bhagwant Mann in 2023. Following this, the panchayat department initiated a probe. On June 9, 2025, the district development and panchayat officer, Ludhiana, submitted a report confirming irregularities and naming the BDPO, AE, JE and contractor as guilty.

Police described the attachment of properties as a major step towards dismantling terror networks and their support structures in the Valley. Police spokesman said that Srinagar police have attached orchard land measuring 3 kanals and 18 marlas, valued at approximately ₹1 crore, belonging to designated terrorist Asif Maqbool Dar who is presently operating from across the border. 'The property is located at Bandi Payeen, district action has been taken in connection with FIR No. 107/2020, registered at Police Station Parimpora, under Sections 124A, 153A, 295A IPC and Sections 13, 18 & 38 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act - UAPA. Proceedings were initiated under Section 25 of the UAPA, which empowers authorities to attach property used or intended to be used for terrorist activities. The attachment was carried out in the presence of the concerned Executive Magistrate,' the spokesman said. Police said that the property is formally held in the name of his father, Mohammad Maqbool Dar of Bandi Payeen, Baramulla, presently residing at HIG Colony, Bemina, investigations have established that Asif Maqbool Dar is an active stakeholder. 'He (Asif) has been involved in facilitating terrorism, spreading anti-national propaganda, and inciting disaffection against the government through various social media platforms for several years,' the spokesman said, adding that the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, has already designated Asif Maqbool Dar as a terrorist. 'The attachment of his property is part of a larger and ongoing strategy aimed at disrupting the financial, logistical, and operational ecosystem of terror networks and their cross-border sponsors. This decisive action by Srinagar Police is intended to send a clear and strong message: those engaged in anti-national and terror-related activities will face strict legal consequences, including forfeiture of their assets.' Meanwhile Anantnag Police also attached immovable property of an active terrorist in Bijbehara south Kashmir. Police spokesman said that Anantnag Police, in its continued crackdown on the terror ecosystem, has attached immovable property belonging to an active terrorist under relevant provisions of law. 'The land falling under Khasra No. 165 MIN, situated at Guree, Bijbehara, and owned by Adil Hussain Thoker of Guree, Bijbehara, an active terrorist, has been attached under Section 83 of CrPC. The action has been taken in connection with FIR No. 11/2023 registered under Sections 20, 38 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and Sections 2/3 of the EIMCO Act.' The spokesman said that this attachment is part of lawful measures aimed at dismantling the support structure of terrorism in the district. 'Such actions will continue against individuals found aiding or involved in unlawful and anti-national activities.'
